I stayed at Sokos Hotel Valjus with my grandmother for two nights. While I was expecting an average room in an average hotel, I must say I was disappointed even with those expectations. While the staff was friendly, the rooms (as well as the hotel in general) really were quite terrible. First of all, it was very hot, which we received no warning of. However, this I think is understandable in a hotel as old as this one, especially when Finland normally doesn't have summers quite so hot. Even then, the room was what one might call the opposite of cozy, had poor air quality, an INCREDIBLY small shower cubicle, very uncomfortable pillows and comforters, and on top of all that it was also dirty (dirt stuck to your feet when walking barefoot, dirty bathroom cabinets etc.). The uncleanliness was the last straw for me, especially at a time like this (global pandemic). Breakfast was great, but unfortunately didn't make up for the uncomfortable stay (think of a boiling hot room with unpleasant bedding). This hotel definitely needs an upgrade, BADLY, and I think it looks bad in the general Sokos Hotel chain. For basically the same price you could stay at a brand new hotel in Turku, for example, which was a great deal more pleasant stay. Please do renovate this place from top to bottom. The location is great, and you could do so much better. As it stands right now, however, I wouldn't stay here another time.…
This hotel gives a completely wrong impression of itself in the net. We thought we were coming to a classy place. Already in the reception we were warned of heat and lacking air conditioning. We had to walk to the room along endless corridores and even STAIRS! maybe 200 meters or so. The result? An ugly, hot street level room with fans yes but they’re circulating hot air. And this room smells MOLD!! >: ( I really didn’t understand that there still are places like this belonging to a famous hotel group! NEVER again to this town unless we can find a better place. Never again to Original Sokos Hotel Valjus >: (
I’m reviewing Valjus keeping in mind other Sokos-hotel stays. On it’s own I might give five stars, but you will expect excellent quality at S-group hotels. Nothing to complain. Parking at the front door.
Pretty standard stuff we’re talking ’bout here. Three-star chain standards expected, but I have to raise one point for Valjus. First of all, everything went as expected with reservation, parking, check-in etc. The location is as centre as possible, room was very clean, bed was comfy and no disturbance what so ever! There’s a decent local restaurant at ground floor serving hearty meals and breakfast. Price level was ok from my perspective, hence a happy customer all in all!
Standard room has very small shower. Room itself was quite spacious. Salmon toasts for dinner were very large and tasty. Breakfast was quite good. Hotel located very few minutes from the lake and very beautiful church
We had a familyroom which are on the first floor next to busy parking lot. While we were staying there was a Terveystalo MRI truck parked next to our window (really less than 2 meters from our window!!). It was awfully annoying, horrible noice and smell of fumes. We tried to call to the reception at 9 pm and nobody answered. We called and called and called and finally we got a contact with a staff member. She was awfully busy working alone but managed to arrange us two standard rooms instead of a family room. She really did her best and of course the MRI truck parking next to our window was not their fault. Next moening while checking out we heard the hotel have had some issues also earlier with the truck. The rooms are dated and quite hot even if it was only +15 celcius outside. But it was really clean and cosy and the sleeping quality was good after changing the room. The breakfast was just perfect, there is everything you need! …
I've stayed at this hotel 5 or 6 times during the past year. Mainly because of its location and to be honest there aren't too many alternatives in Kajaani. This time was my last though, from now on I'll opt for an AirBnB or even the Scandic nearby. First the pros: The staff. Every single member of the staff from waitresses to night managers are extremely friendly. I'm sure they're well-trained but it's probably also a local thing, a small town kind of thing. Besides the staff, the location is also worth mentioning. Right in the middle of the "city", close the restaurants and shops. The common sauna is also a nice touch, just check the timetable beforehand. The restaurant is open until 23:00 which is nice - although the food is waaaaay too expensive compared to the quality. But let's be real, for 120€ a night you would expect a little more. My biggest problem is that it's dirty and old. That's so rare in Finland where hotels are usually spotless. The fourth floor looks like a dirty motel in Albania with stains on the carpet and paint coming off the walls. The rooms are cleaner but my god update the furniture already. Secondly I hate that the walls are paper thin. I have to sleep with ear plugs just in case someone on the same floor goes to the bathroom or opens their door. I guess you don't have a choice if you're visiting Kajaani, you have to stay here. And somehow it feels like the owners know it - that's why the renovating is still due. For 80€ a night the level of your hotel would be ok but for the prices you are charging I feel like it's a bad deal for the customer.…
Friendly staff, good service and we felt very wellcome. Rooms are from 80`s or early 90`s i assume.. Some update would do very good. The is parking hall (extra charge) , but if you have ski box on top of the car most likely your vechile is then too tall for it. Ok to stay for A night
I stayed at Original Sokos Hotel Valjus for one night because of my move from Kajaani. The hotel's location is excellent in the city center. The hotel room was quite old but also clean and quiet. The breakfast had a very peaceful atmosphere and the staff were polite.
Hotel is surprisingly modern and definitely something special for a small town somewhere in the north of Finland. Without hesitation I rate it excellent, because it goes really beyond of what I used to know as typical Sokos hotel. They changed their approach and now it is vibrant hotel with excellent Nordic design and comfy beds, with plenty-of-choice breakfast. That hotel still keeps the charm of affordable hotel without excessive luxury. I would be happy to have a chance to return in summer and enjoy beautiful northern nature and calm of the small town.
