Detailed Reviews
First, the good things:
1. It is very well located, a short walk from the town centre, from 2 major shopping centres, the bus stop and the railway station.
2. We stayed in a private room, and it was reasonably spacious - 2 adults, a kid and 2 HUGE suitcases fit in, no problem.
3. Big clean bathroom.
4. The basement has a self catering kitchen and dining room.
The 2 negative points about the hostel are
1. Like most HI hostels, there is a 2 pm check in, and most trains from the capital reach Rovaniemi in the morning or night. The problem is, unlike other hostels, you can't even get in to the hostel and use the rest room and lobby, since it is staff less, and can be entered only by punching in an access code which gets activated at 2 pm on the day of your check in.
We paid for an extra half day to enter the hostel, because the alternative was to stand on freezing streets for 6 hours on a Sunday morning.
2. You have to go to a hotel called Santa Claus to check in, and that truly is a pain. Check in, lug all your baggage to Hotel Rudolf - boring.
But for the money you are paying, the rooms are very good value. Service is nil of course, it is staff less. Your rooms get cleaned only after you check out, and you put your access cards in a mail box, and your linen in a basket near the lift.

Very basic hotel compared to Finnish standards however clean and everything you need to stay a night in a hotel. Not that convenient to check-in at Santa's Hotel 750m from Rudolf, so keep in mind - no services at Rudolf.

Excellent location - in center of old city with museum, old factories and shopping /service center in walking distance (10 min to info center, 5 min to museum Arktikum [and others] with my kid).
For people following the nature this distance is really nothing.
The hotel (hostel) do have everything a family can need. We did make some brasil spargetti in our own favor and other home fask food in the lovely small kitchen (notice, no staff to clean so please everybody treat it as your own home - do clean everything and put them back in order).
In Spring/Autumn time I may select some other resort plus rent a car. In Winter - Hostel Rudolf can be one of the best choice for first time Rovavniemi city visit.
For those with very small kids, may select hotel right close by info center at doubled price.

I have booked this hotel for December 2025. Have emailed numerous times to alter my booking to one day before and no replies!! I can't believe they just don't reply!!
Have emailed them to an email off site but still nothing, but can see that they have read my messages through booking.com but nothing. To add insult to that then I realized I was charged an extra $12 and have no idea why and it wasn't the exchange rate. So now I have to cancel my booking with no refund and re book elsewhere as they wont interact with me?
Absolutely shocking customer service.
Disclaimer: I have not stayed here yet as it is booked for December 2025 but when making this complaint I had to select a date of when I went and it doesn't allow me to proceed without selection. So I selected December 2024 to proceed with the complaint.

We stayed there for 2 nights in February 2013. It was very cold weather, but the room and hostel was very warm. It was clean and also had lots of pans-pots-dishes in the kitchen. The reception was in a nearby Hotel Santa Claus where the staff was very friendly and informative. You could get into the hostel only by using a keycard so there were no random people hanging about :)
Hostel was no smoking inside, which was good and it also had free parking. I reccommend this place! :)
Oh, and most important- it was SUPER CLOSE to the city centre, just 5 min walk to the mall and pubs etc. ;)

We stayed here for 8 nights and it was really great. The location is perfect, about 10 minutes to the center and there are supermarkets, Mcdonalds and travel agencies nearby. It's not cheap like other hostels around the world but it's the cheapest in Rovaniemi. The room is small but clean and its warm. There's a Free wi-fi and there's a kitchen downstairs that you can use. The only thing is there's no staff at the hostel so you need to check in at Santa Claus Hotel which is 10-15 minutes away.We arrived at midnight and walked all the way up to the hostel after checking-in but it wasn't so bad. There's also a shuttle bus from the airport for about 7 Euro. In total the place is recommended:)

I got to the hostel having arrived at the train station. Having left my main pack in the large lockers at the station (2€), I walked the 10-15 minutes to the hotel Santa Claus (with day sack) to check in. Tip - You can get a map from the ticket office as you go in on the right hand side. The hotel is at the end of the pedestrian precinct opposite to 2 Irish pubs. Having booked in you then walk back up a hill to the hostel just before the blue 'hotelli' sign.
The hostel itsellään is more like an unimainen hotel where there are only en-suite rooms but not dorms. The kitchen is a largidh cupboard and you will fight for sink space as it will only hold 1 person at a time.
In the end it's the ultimate no frills hotel with an above hostel price tag but you do get a proper bed, bedding and towels and your own bathroom. In also includes a free walk through town to checkin but you leave your key card at the hostel when you leave.
Ps if you need laundry doing, it is donne through the hotel but not weekends.

Hostel Rudolf was is excellent budget accommodation in what is quite an expensive Finnish town. A five minute walk from the centre of town (15 to the train station) it is centrally located and easy to find. The rooms were sparse but clean and comfortable. A higher standard than a typical 'hostel' private room, our twin contained an en suite, wardrobe, bedside tables and a television with a large array of channels. Further the hostel provides two kitchens (one irregularly cleaned and in a bit of a sorry state while we stayed there) and recreational area. A fabulous option for those who like to self cater!
The only drawback of the hostel (and it is a small one) is that there are no staff on site. The hostel is affiliated with the Hotel Santa Claus (about a seven minute walk away). Keys must therefore be collected at Santa Claus before you can enter the hostel. We found the best option (particularly as the weather was -20 degrees) was to catch a taxi to Hotel Santa Claus and then take the easy walk over to the hostel. There are some benefits to this arrangement however, Santa Claus allows hostel residents use of the free internet in reception and will store luggage.
Overall fantastic accommodation in a fabulous city.

You have to put in a request to have your room cleaned. Bring your own shampoo. You get 1 towel. Internet sucks. Checkin is at 15:00 and the hotel is over 600 yards away from the reception. Checkout is at 11:00. Breakfast not included. The reception reps look tired and overworked. You don’t get much for what you pay for. Will I recommend it? Hell no.

Ideal place to stay if you are looking for value for money. Clean, comfy room with a kettle plus tea/coffee.
Approx 10 minutes walk for the Santa Claus hotel where you need to check in.
The only negative point to make is having to walk from the main hotel up to the Hotel Rudolf. Especially in the snow pulling suitcases.
Would still recommend this hotel as the location is good and it’s value for money.

Response from HotelSantaClaus, duty manager at Santa's Hotel Rudolf
Responded 2 Feb 2019
Hello, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us, we appreciate it. We are happy to learn that you enjoyed your stay in Hotel Rudolf overall and it was good value for money. However, we are sorry that the check-in location felt inconvenient. We acknowledge that it is a bit more demanding during the winter time when there is snow on the streets. We hope you will have the chance to visit us again in the future. Have a nice winter time and welcome again! Best regards, Helena
