Just returned from a week in the Salmilampi cabin and it was the best holiday ever. The cabin was remote yet you do not feel isolated although a car is a must. Everything you need is in the cabin or can be purchased locally (20min drive). The cabin was always warm and bigger than the photos suggest. We made use of the hot tub and sauna both of which were amazing even in the -30 degree weather. I cannot recommend this cabin enough and is a must for a more traditional Finnish experience. Jouni the owner was helpful and polite. Would return next week if I could but the memory's will last a lifetime. Thanks you Jouni.
If you want to get away from it all, then this location is for you. The cottage is located deep in the forest with the nearest house being several miles away, and 8 miles from Rovaniemi city. A locked gate, you will have the key, ensures the forest area is not only secluded but very secure and quiet. Its distance into the forest means there are no passers by. You get a true sense of isolation and seclusion. The cottage is constructed entirely of wooden logs, and is very cosy and comfortable. All the amenities are great. Kitchen is fully equipped, microwave, coffee maker, fridge freezer, dishwasher. The house is warm and cosy and there is ample supply of firewood in the woodshed for as many cosy fires as you want. There is a small bathroom combined shower room with underfloor heating, and a small utility room with washing machine. A ladder/stair leads from the combined living/kitchen area to the loft where there are two single beds, a spare mattress and 2 chairs and a small table. The master bedroom is off the kitchen, with glorious views out through the trees and down towards the lake. The bed is comfortable and the room is very cosy. In the grounds there is a woodshed, a Hot-tub which comes at an extra cost and a sauna. I decided to use the hot tub and paid the extra. It takes a lot of maintenance to run the hot tub and sauna, so be warned, you will need to feed the fires at least every 20 minutes for several hours. Nothing quite beats being in hot water under the full moon when the outside temperature is minus 25 degrees celsius. Practicalities - the location would be impossible to navigate without a car, in snowy conditions, Jouni, the owner will plough the tracks to the cottage. But, take extra care on the forest track, they can be slippery, but the drive is beautiful. Keys are collected from the owners address and he then guides you to the cottage. Google maps will navigate you from the house to any location, but it will not navigate you back. My advice, take note of the turns you must take in the forest, and when returning use the Toramo Shooting Range, Rovaniemi as a point of reference in getting you back onto the unnamed tracks. Visit a supermarket before heading to the cottage, you will need to take all your own food to the cottage. I used the Lidl and K Citymarket. Incredible place, surrounded by nature and peace and quiet.…
Can't speak highly enough about these cabins. We had an absolutely magical winter stay here in the medium sized cabin. Saw the northern lights from the verandah and you can see the sunrise. Hot tub amazing! There were sleds to use and the fantastic Jouni brought over a kick sled too. Our 5 year old was in heaven. The kitchen was well equipped and heating was excellent. Only a short drive to supermarkets, town and main attraction yet surrounded by beauty. Jouni was unfailingly helpful with his clueless guests from the tropics.
I travelled with my friend and 2 children and what a magical place this was! We stayed in the Harkalampi cabin on it's own lake with a hot tub and sauna! We drove to Jouni's house to get the keys and then he kindly lead us (we followed him in our rental car) to the cabin. The drive does seem quite long at first but we managed to get back in and out without getting lost (I'd highly recommend dropping pins on Google maps if you struggle with remembering directions). As we arrived at 4 we didn't get to see the cabin's surroundings in all their glory until the following morning and when we did they were so beautiful! Cabin was super toasty despite all the snow around. Managed to get the hot tub fired up and it was lovely! Cabin has everything you need to be comfortable. There are some basic supplies there but I'd definitely recommend buying your supplies before you go to meet Jouni to get the keys (supermarket about 15 minute drive away). Also I must say Jouni really went out of his way to help us, not only did he kindly give us some ice hockey tickets but he also posted back my daughter's mobile phone when she left it there! Can't wait to go back!…
From the moment we booked until we left the cabin, the service and help we received was outstanding. When we pulled up to Harkalampi which is a 1 bedroomed cabin and mezzanine with fabulous amenities, we were in awe of the place. The bathroom was a large size with a great shower with a plenty of hot water and wonderful pressure, to the kitchen which was well stocked with utensils and basics you need if you want to self cater. The double bed were more than comfortable and our teen boys were comfortable in the mezzanine on put up beds. The location is indescribable. The tranquility, silence and overall beauty cannot be explained unless you have been here. Our friends also travelled with us and stayed at the Salmilampi which was just a 5 minute drive away from us in yet another beautiful secluded area of the forest. There was an outside hot tub that was wood fired and a sauna that was also outside and there was plenty wood for our use. We stayed here for 1 week and enjoyed it so much we have rebooked to go back next February. It was one of the best holidays we have ever been on and our teen boys aged 14 and 18 cannot wait to go back which is usually unheard of. The best part was the serenity and the sunrises the colours which we ranging from the most vivid blues to a magical orange. There is nothing that could have been done to make our stay any better. Join the host and owner is not only approachable with any questions or help that is needed, he goes out of his way to make your stay a memorable one. A car is needed as the cottage/lodge is approx 15 minute drive from the town of Rovaniemi which was more than suitable for us.You will not be disappointed.…
The host (Jouni) is very helpful and will go out of his way to ensure you have a great stay. The location is simply stunning, the lake was frozen this time of the year, however, Jouni brought over his personal ice fishing kit and drilled some holes so the kids could try fishing! Now that’s going the extra mile. The private sauna was easy to get going and very enjoyable, especially as the temperature dropped to -14 degrees. We hired a car so we could travel to see the local attractions. The cabin is self catered, there is a fridge, tv, washing machine and dishwasher. We found plenty of supermarkets located on the route into town and ate in most of the 3 nights. There are toboggans available at the cabin which the kids really enjoyed using. We highly recommend staying here, Jouni is a great host who will make your stay even more enjoyable. On our drive to the cabin, he stopped and pointed out the Northern lights! The cabin location is remote (8km) from Rovaniemi, in our opinion this is actually a big positive as it gives you a real sense of Finnish wilderness, no internet or telephone to disrupt the peace and tranquility of this location.…
I can recommend this hotel. The place is amazing and guiet. Everythink was clean and really nice. We saw the Aurora first day here and I think that this place is perfect for this (no city lights). Thanks for all.
Idyllic. Excellent location. Has a fire pit, BBQ area, an inside and outside sauna. We are a family of 2 adults 3 kids, there is 1 x double bedroom and then a mezzanine level to 4 more beds/floor mattresses however the stairs are a bit steep and small and the opening to upstairs is only really for a child. There were decorations there for our kids to put up for Christmas. Plenty of wood for the fire, but also electric heaters. The petrol station has a good shop about 15mins drive. You have to open and close the gate to get in and out which is quite heavy going. The guy comes and clears the driveway of snow so you can get in and out. There are a few plastic sledges in the log cabin to use. It has a dishwasher, but was in need of salt and rinse aid. It has a top load washing machine and lovely underfloor heating in the bathroom.…
Oh we loved it so much!!! We took the one with a beautiful lake just in front of the cottage. We drove about 10 km in the woods (you surely need a car to get there) and arrived to a perfect location. The cottage was well equipped, we only brought our own sheets (which you can rent by the way). The kitchen has everything you need. The cottage all wooden from the inside, has this awesome fireplace (we used it every night, there's wood available in a separate cabin near the cottage). Also there's sauna, which we didn't get a chance to use (but I'm sure it's amazing). There's also a nice deck with a bench in the lake and even a boat you can use (we weren't brave enough to use it though, it was cold and we have no sailing experience :) ) the nature is amazing, the woods are enchanting, lots of berries and mushrooms all around. We saw a squirrel and reindeer! And the most exciting thing - we saw the northern lights just from the porch! As it appeared we ran to the deck and enjoyed this magnificent display as it covers the starry sky and reflects its light on the lake. Stunning!!! We loved this place so much, such quiet vacation in the pure wild nature. The host Jouni was very helpful and nice, gave us a bunch of tips. I would recommend this place and definitely would come again!!!…
If you are looking for a very quiet place where you want to feel alone in the world, in the middle of the forest, then, no doubt, go to Ukonloma cottages. Yes, you need to have a rental car... yes you are 8 kilometers far for Rovaniemi city center... yes there is no internet access (but 3G phone connexion for those who cannot not manage to stay unconnected for several hours) and yes you are alone in the forest with a 4 km private road... BUT it was a beautiful cottage made of wooden trunks, near to small lakes, a quiet place with 2 sauna (one outside (the real one) and one inside (more convenient when you don't want to go out), a very efficient fireplace and very well equipped. Jouni is very helpful and he can manage late arrivals, early departures and he is available for any reasons during your stay. But even if you add the price for a rental car, it is one of the less expensive cottage in Rovaniemi and it is a unique experience that I am sure the other are not proposing !!!! On top of all, we had a unique place to look at northern light just 300m far from the cottage, without city light pollution ! Just a perfect place to stay ! If I will be back in Rovaniemi, I will not try any other cottage. I will be back there !!!…
