We've been here with two small kids and they were absolutely enjoyd it. It is based almost in the middle of the city in a quiet wooded area.
Our airline was striking and we needed to stay one more day. I just called the staff for extend our stay and they were very helpfull and quick.
Not expensive compare to the area.

Amazing chalets with fireplace and beautiful forest at your doorstep. The place was spotless clean, super cozy and had everything that we needed. The kitchen is well equipped. You will be able to do walks through the Winter Trials which are lighten up so you can go up to the Observatory Tower and have a fire there when it's pitch dark.
Kids can sledge outside the cottage. There is a bus stop near by and the place is not super remote but I would say get a car when booking this place.

I stayed 10 days solo. The location was perfect as I could take the running trail straight from the door. The accommodation is located in Ounasvaara Park, which is an endless forest with well maintained trails. At the same time I was about 3 km away from the city center, and maybe 1km away from a big grocery store. I wish I could afford to stay longer.

Excellent accommodation, modern and spotlessly clean. Dishwasher, washing machine, dryer press and sauna . Gorgeous location just beside the winter trials in a forested area but a quick drive into the city. Sledges available for kids. Would stay again

Dear readers,
This was such an amazing place.
Yes it was not cheap but it was worth it 100%, and hope we will return and stay longer.

You may park your car on the side.
It has floor heating at the whole house.
A sauna, 2 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, lovely kitchen with all you need.
A fireplace, free internet, outdoor seating.
It’s full out of wood and it has its own personal charm.

It was so warm that we opened the small side window as we couldn’t sleep. It needed the option to open the window more. We switched off the floor heating.

The location was perfect too.
All in All we loved it!
Thank you for having us

Just got back from an amazing Thomson UK trip to Lapland 14th - 18th December. It was just me and my daughter who is 5. The cabin sleeps 6, it was modern and cosy just as you'd imagine a cottage in the snowy woods to be, like a Christmas card I fell in love with it. Everything you need in the kitchen pots, pans, cutlery, only thing missing was a tea towel I kept looking for it!! We walked to the shop on the first night, we got lost so with hindsight should of taken a taxi as we had shopping bags on the sledge and it is uphill all the way back!! Nice walk if you're not getting much shopping. It's just literally all the way to the bottom of the hill and through the underpass. Note for parents it doesn't sell wine or spirits just beer. Taxi is only 7euros. I bought stuff for breakfast but the elves had dropped off bread, bacon, eggs, milk, jam, croissants (in the freezer), a few teabags and coffee which was amazing!

I had a problem getting the heating on in the lounge probably me pressing the wrong button but it didn't warrant a compliant as the downstairs bathroom had heating so I just left the door open and lit the fire. It was warm enough with the door open I just liked having the fire on as it was cosy, logs are stored outside with sledges. When the fire was on it warmed the upstairs bedroom on the landing where we slept, the roof is slanted so we slept the opposite way as I definately would of banged my head!! I fell in love with this cabin I could've stayed a lot longer, all my thanks to the cabin management for being so great, I had a problem getting in once and the maintenance guy arrived within 5mins to help, it was just a case of give the door a shove when you turn the key and when you pull it from the inside it locks, I was trying to turn it to lock. There's instructions on how the cabin works including the sauna, heating and washing machine. Get some free newspapers from reception if you want to light the fire just scrunch them up and it lights the wood better, you get matches on top of the fire. We didn't go to breakfast at the Sky hotel as it was more than adequate in the cabin, you can buy hot drinks in the lounge and snacks, we didn't go in the restaurant but heard it was nice and you can view the surroundings out of the big windows. Located on the ski slope but unfortunately didn't get chance to use it.

Taster morning is good fun, you only get one go on reindeer, snow mobile and huskys but it's still fun, there's a mini skidoo for kids to drive and big ones which adults can drive but that's your turn over, I chose for the guy to drive us in the sled which was still fast! There's an icy slope you go down on your bum we loved that! Dinner is meatballs and mash or burger and chips, gingerbread with tea, coffee or hot chocolate and juice for kids all in a cosy lodge with a fire then the afternoon is your own time, we just went back and did some sledging outside the cabin.

First night we did the Elf Adventure and having a young child I would suggest you try and get them to nap if they get grumpy by evening as mine does! She had a sleep so was ready for the 3hr night trip. It's only 15mins away and has lots of activities, snow tube slide, snow buggy on a frozen lake, hot choc tent, Mrs Claus's house, gingerbread decorating, xmas tree finding, snow football. I think you need longer here tbh but we managed everything (just). Lunch was similar to the taster morning but with chicken nuggets for the kids, and a veg lasagne, rice dishes or meatballs were the other choices, fresh made coleslaw, salad, bread. I had a bit of everything! Don't expect gourmet it's just a buffet and fills you up what more can you ask?! At the end of the night Jack Frost the snowman comes and you all have a snowball fight. The trip was 226euros which is a lot for what it was but the kids love it! Mrs Claus is lovely too she spends so much time talking to the kids and you can get a photo with her, you make key rings with her too. We were rushed in there as there's so much to do so we put some beads in our bag to finish later!! Snow buggy was awesome, adults can drive themselves but you can't drive your child the expert has to do that.

Second day is your free day, we chose not to book a Thomson husky ride because of the reviews so I booked before we went with Bear Hill Huskys. DO THIS! Thomson only give you 30mins riding in a sled and talking about huskys. We had such a personal experience with the people who run it, they give you extra thermals and boots and I got to drive the sled myself, the whole ride lasts 1.5hrs! Absolutely mind blowing experience. Then you go back to the hut and get warm with hot juice and biscuits while she brings in the puppies if they have any, they were so cute! She'll tell you all about the dogs too and what their names are.

Bear hill will drop you off at Santa Village if you ask and I'm glad we did as we got to do Snowman World as we wouldn't have time if we had gone with Thomson on the last day. Snowman world is 20euros each, there's ice sculptures, snowman bedrooms, a massive ice tube slide and one for smaller children, ice skating, ice bar. Keeps the kids entertained but not for a huge amount of time we only stayed an hour. You get a wrist band to go back in but we didn't bother. Then had a wander round the village, loads of shops that sell the same things so shop around before you buy as prices vary a lot and are very expensive for what you're buying but expected in a heavily populated tourist area. Santa's Post office is lovely, we sent some cards and letters home and the gifts in that shop are better quality than some I'd seen. Theres letters from all over the world so I put my daughters in the pile sneakily and she was over the moon! There's a Santa there but the queue was massive so we went in the Santa Village hotel reception shop which you'll see if you walk past snowman world it is a big pointy building and they had a Santa who was free so we went in and he spent a good 5mins talking to my daughter and we had a photo, 30 euros for 4 small ones or 20 for a big one. You don't get a present but the gala dinner Santa on the last night hardly said anything so I'd of been dissopointed if I hadn't seen this one. Older kids might notice the slight difference in appearance.

As the other reviews say with the Thomson trip to Santa Park and Santa Village it's VERY VERY rushed I can't express that enough and glad I read those reviews first. Everyone piles off about 5 buses at once and charges for the door so it takes a good 10mins just to get in! Then had 1hr 45mins which is definitely not enough if you have kids with you. The elf school is on every 15-20mins so you can spend 20mins queuing just to get in. There's an angry birds soft play in the main bit where I had a coffee while my daughter played and you can watch the elf show while you wait which was good. We told our elf we'd get a taxi to Santa Village. Book a taxi at the info desk it was only 10euros. Once the Thomson buses had left it was heaven! Hardly any queues so we did elf school, gingerbread decorating you get one token for a free biscuit but you can buy extra for not much, magic train which shows you lots of xmassy things as you go around, ice gallery, made xmas decs in Elf's workshop and you put it on the wall on the country you are from which is pretty cool to see, did some shopping and then went to Santa Village. As we had done a lot the day before it was more chilled out, we had a reindeer ride which was only 52 euros, doesn't last long but reindeers aren't very exciting it's enough really! We played on the outside play area then went back to get ready for the gala dinner.

Gala dinner is back at the lodge where elf adventure is which again is a lovely log cabin all lit up. This time it's a sit down meal of veg soup, turkey dinner and raspberry sponge, kids get a cornetto. Adults can buy a small selection of alcohol and you have to buy the children's juice. You each have a table name and they do a quiz which keeps everyone entertained brilliantly then Santa arrives and everyone rushes out to see him. You get called up table by table to see him in a private room with your family and can take your own pics but like I said it was rushed as he has a lot of little ones to see, his reindeer is outside that you can take pics of it. It was a great night thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sorry for the long review but I hope you picked up one or two points you might use. You can't go wrong with this holiday it's non stop start to finish and you'll be exhausted but you'll want to do it again and again!!

I always try to write the most helpful reviews to equip you all to have the best stay.

Chalet:
It was more like a house! It was beautiful, there were only 4 of us and it slept 6. There is a room downstairs next to the kitchen (or the 2nd sauna as i called it!). It got very hot with underfloor heating on. The second bedroom was upstairs and had cute slanted ceilings. The third sleeping space was on the mezzanine right outside the second bathroom. It wasn’t an issue for us but i’m not sure how it would work for 6 people or a family with children. Especially if you go to bed at different times as you’d have to walk past the two sleeping on the mezzanine to get to the 2nd main bedroom and if those in the bedroom wanted to use the toilet you’d likely wake those sleeping on the mezzanine. The chalet has wifi and a fully functioning kitchen with dishwasher, oven, toaster, kettle and microwave. There were also ants. They only seemed to be in the downstairs bathroom/sauna and kitchen. We ended up throwing food away that we had left on the side as we didn’t realise ants were an issue there. They were in the dishwasher and food bin as well. We noticed that the cleaning wasn’t great either, lots of thick dust under the bed. But we didn’t let these minor things spoil our trip.

Transport/car hire:
After weighing up our options we decided to opt for Car hire even though we had trips booked for each day that included transport. It worked out about the same, if not slightly cheaper to get a car instead of taxi’s etc. We used the car a minimal amount. From the airport to santa clause village as soon as we arrived, from the village to the supermarket on the way to the chalet, supermarket to chalet x 2 and from the chalet to airport (via petrol stn to fill the tank up to full which cost about 4 euros). It is quite easy to drive over there. The road was very icy but it was fine with the snow tyres etc.

Trips:
We had everything planned and paid for before we left. We did a Husky Safari, snowmobile, ice fishing and reindeer safari all of which we really enjoyed. I will leave a review for these separately but the companies we used are Bearhill Husky and Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park.

Northern Lights:
Having seen the Northern Lights in Tromso a few months ago it was not something i was specifically going to Rovaniemi for. However, we were lucky enough to see them on 2/3 nights. And it was AMAZING. We walked up to the Sky Hotel and asked to use their Sky Terrace. They are happy for you to do so if you buy a drink which you can take up with you. You then get the code to the gate. We went up for a look and were lucky to see the Northern Lights over Rovaniemi. We were happy and stayed to watch them until they left. We read the local website and the following day was poor in terms of seeing them again so we didn’t bother going back. However, our guide on the snowmobile safari the following day said that our last night was looking very good. We therefore went back to the Sky Bar and were able to see them again but this time ever better. After spending an hour showing everyone else on the roof the best camera settings we took a little walk into the forrest towards the observation tower. It was the best decision. There is a clearing and the views of the sky were great. It was there that they came to life. For hours! Dancing in the sky. It was so magical.

Rovaniemi:
The town itself is ok. We only went there once for lunch. Does it warrant a visit, not really unless you want to eat out. The walk back to the chalet took just over half an hour and really did make us warm!

It was -15 when we went and it really wasn’t that bad. I had 4 layers on. The only time i suffered was at night on the sky bar. I suffer with cold feet and hands anyway so i knew i’d struggle. After using hand and foot warmers and a thinner pair of gloves under my main ones i was fine. I also popped to the fire at reception in the Sky Hotel on one occasion just to warm up. It was a nice place to relax of an evening.

I hope this review has been useful.

Deae Laurenoflondon, Thank you for very useful review. There are a lot of good tips and advises for people travelling to Rovaniemi. I'm really really happy that you have been so lucky to see the northen lights almost every night of your stay. That's not something that everyone can tell after visting Rovaniemi :) Ounasvaaran Lakituvat chalets are located on a perfect spot in Rovaniemi when it comes to outdoor activities and watching the northern lights. But as they are located in the pure nature there are sometimes ants also inside. I'll let the maintenance know about your feed back and we will do our best to avoid them coming inside the chalets. But I'm clad to read that you have enjoyed your stay with us. Welcome back anytime! :)

Taught both my kids to ski here on the nursery slopes. Very quiet at the end of season - perfect. Looked great for skiing too but I spent my time with the kids and they both were confident enough by the end of the day.

This place is enchanting. We've traveled in March 2019 with my family including 2 children age 8 and 2. Safartica is the company managing this property. They offered to us the best customer service and fulfill every request we had to ask.
We took the train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi. Another beautiful experience for the kids.
We reserved two cabins with bunk beds, bathroom and shower. Very comfortable.
You can book the train online (IC265 going up and IC266 going back to Helsinki). You can fly as well if you don't like the train.
The chalet is just fantastic. 3 bedrooms with 6 beds, full kitchen, 2 bathroom, one with inside sauna. Washer and dryer. Cozy Fireplace. Just all you need to live like home.
The hotel Sky Ounaasvaaran is at walking distance, were you can use their restaurant or just spend few hours having a drink. Also Grocery market is 20-25 minutes walking.
Plenty of tours available. It is cold but surprisingly not as cold as we thought. Helsinki was much colder.
Visit the close Santa Claus village (20-25 Euros by taxi). You can cross the Arctic Circle line right there. Husky and reindeer tour available at extra cost. Meet with Santa (free entrance, but then they offer pictures and video at extra cost if you want to purchase).
Send my messages if you want to know more.

Where to start?! Gorgeous chalet, away from the the town but still near enough to accomodate our family. We stayed late December and my son loved that he was able to decorate the Christmas tree provided upon arrival. The chalet was clean and tidy, very spacious with room for 6 guests, loved the sauna and shed with toboggans which we were able to use directly out our front door. Check in was very easy using the lock box service. We did not want to leave. Would 100% come back or recommend for other guests. Worth every cent.

I suggest you check other agents even though they have their own tours on their web page. They are good, but I usually use viator....never been disappointed. You will just love the chalet, very comfortable and cozy. Short walk to the hotel. Most tours knows the chalet location and will pick you up from you door or closer to the streets, other will ask you to wait at hotel. Don't forget to buy groceries at near by shop....and light up that fireplace and use the inside sauna. Just heaven. Have fun.

Hello, My apologies for answering this late. Our chalet accommodation itself doesn't have a restaurant, but nearby restaurants Royal Reindeer and Lapland Hotel Sky Ounasvaara offer breakfasts and dinners. Both of them are located about 200 meters from our chalets. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact us! Best regards, Mari
