The Scandic Pohjanhovi is actually 2 buildings connected by an underground tunnel. The rooms in the main building (the original hotel) are large and comfortable. Rooms facing the water have a great view.

Reception is open 24 hours. Breakfast is included in the room rate, and the buffet has a great selection of hot and cold food.

The hotel is well located. It’s on the river next to the Lumberjack Candle bridge. The Santa Express bus goes from right outside the hotel’s second building. That building also houses the tour company Lapland Safaris where you can hire warm clothing and take tours. Other tour companies will also come to the Hotel Pohjanhovi to collect you.

It’s a short walk from the Scandic Pohjanhovi to Lordi Square, which has many shops and restaurants. And if you don’t feel like walking, lunch and dinner are available in the Pohjanhovi restaurant on the ground floor of the main building and their buffet meals are very reasonably priced.

We booked here quite late for our trip over Christmas. The reviews were accurate in that the place is very dated, but that alone would not put us off from staying as location is very good, right by the river and town centre and reception staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet nice quality and wide ranging so there should be something for everyone and there was a separate gluten free and vegan section. Rooms tired, but could be better with a little maintenance and cleaning. Fridge was helpful. Bed comfortable, but sheets were scratchy and not changed during our stay. It seemed that making the room up meant emptying the bin and replacing used towels and cups only. The sofa bed was not comfortable for the kids as the cushions kept slipping down as they were not fixed underneath, but we fixed by layering up some extra cushions so was fine. The pool was open despite the booking site saying it was closed. This seemed clean and not many people using it. It could be really nice with a little TLC.

The hotel is alright: rooms are comfortable and so is the bed.
But there seems to be a problem between Lapland and service: no one seems to care about customers. In a way they seem to tell you: you got a room, you got a bed (or you got a table, a fork and a knife), be happy and do not bother us!. One example: you go back to your room at 4 pm and the room has not been fixed yet.
You ask at the reception desk what the problem is and they candidly ask you: ''why, are you in a hurry''?

Situated at the riverside, nice for a walk around the two bridges over the Kemijoki river. Only a few steps to the city center. Good selection of buffet for dining.
Also suited for large groups.
Clean rooms, nice staff.

Hotel is very well located. You can reach whatever you want. Bus stop is at the front. Located near the river and area is quiet. We stayed 3 person in a room. Two buildings are connected with underground tunnel. You can enter throuh the end of the central building via your room card, you do not need to go via reception all time.
All room facilites are functioning well. Heating and isolation is perfect, It was minus 26C and already warm indoor. Bath and toilet is adequate, if you need only function. Do not wait for luxus in the room, but everything was functioning. Room was clean and everyday room get cleaned, trash was emptied (we did not arrive before 16). Breakfast was fine you can find whatever you need. Specialities for Lapland was included, buttercream, berrysauces etc. Glutenfree food was available. You can drink tap water in Findland, do not buy bootled water. We did not have time to visit fin bath and pool.

Spent two weeks in this hotel as part of my business trip and I got to say I’m pretty dissapointed. When I paid €175 per night I expected a nice, clean hotel with a decent breakfast but unfortunately that was not the case. I think the worst thing about the hotel is cleanliness. throughout the two weeks the room hasn’t been hoovered once and the only daily cleaning they do is change the sheets and towels. I thought maybe I was wrong and just didn’t see it but then I left a few things around the room which are obviously rubbish and nothing was collected for the rest of my stay. To me this was very dissapointing. Also, the breakfast, lack of choice, doesn’t taste or look fresh and most times you can’t even find a free table. The only reason I didn’t give one star is because the bed was genuinely comfortable but other than that I couldn’t find any good points.

Hi Goblis1, Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback. I am so sorry to hear about your experience with us. We will absolutely go through this feedback with our team and make sure we will learn from it. In Scandics we have over 100 items served in the breakfast and it is of course very important it is fresh and tasteful. I wish to see you again with us some day in the future and hope to give you a better experience with us. Kind Regards, Rosa Hotel Manager

We were given a large room for three people with two bathrooms, which was very welcome. There was a mini bar that we didn’t use, but no tea or coffee making facilities in the room. There was a hot water machine in reception. Bed linen & towels clean & plentiful. Breakfast was amazing, so much choice but I had to pay extra for cappuccino from a machine in reception. The pool was disappointing - gloomy lighting and the water was freezing. Just the look on the kids’ faces when they jumped in, made the decision for me to not use it at all. All the staff were helpful and friendly and the hotel was close to the town. The hotel restaurant was full for the duration of our stay - should have pre-booked, but we found two great restaurants nearby. We enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is dived in 2 building, so make sure to find out where are you staying before making a reservation, because if you are in the second building you have to cross the street in the cold just to have breakfast and the elevator on that building works only from 9 am to 6 pm.
The mattress on the bed are non-existent,the room was dirty, there isn’t a phone so you can’t contact the main desk.
We had to ask a few times because they didn’t daily clean our room, stuff really unhelpful with any problem we had.
One of our jacket went missing from our room.
The only positive things are that breakfast was decent overall and the location is good because is in the heart of Rovaniemi.
But the hotel is absolutely not a four star hotel, and the price is definì too high for the service they provide

This legendary hotel has an excellent location by Kemijoki River in the city center.

The hotel was opened already in 1936 but it was completely destroyed during the Lapland War in 1944. Pohjanhovi was rebuilt and reopened in 1947. The hotel was renovated and expanded in the 1960s and 1970s so that in 1981 it had 214 hotel rooms.

The Presidential Suite is located in the newer wing on the top 5th floor. It is a very spacious suite (92 sqm) with balconies in three directions. From the bathroom, you can find a spacious sauna.

This time we paid only 155 euros per night. In 2018, the price was 400 euros. So our stay had an excellent value for money. My partner also got a 15-euros Scandic TOP Level voucher per night that could be used in the lobby shop or bar. The restaurant was open only for breakfast.

The breakfast was now much better than in 2018. The food selection was the normal Scandic selection. The atmosphere was pleasantly calm.

Excellent location in Rovaniemi.
We stayed in a very nice room in the main building with a beautiful view of the river.
Staff is very nice, especially Juuli who is awesome, smiling and friendly all the time even after a long day at work.
The pool is somewhat heated, not warm but ok if you actually swim. I loved that the pool and sauna are open till 10 pm and doesn’t close early so guests may enjoy the pool after a day full of activities.
Saunas are separate for men and women. I think towels should be provided at the pool, but you can ask reception and they will give you a towel.
The reason I am giving a 4 star review instead of 5 stars is because in my opinion they could offer more options at meals.
There was not an omelette station , that’s understandable considering that many groups stay in this hotel, but unfortunately the scrambled eggs were not very tasty each day (perhaps somewhat undercooked ).
Every evening french fries were available, I think they should have more family friendly options such as pizza or pasta for the younger guests. Many of the kids in our group preferred to eat out because the didn’t like the food very much. On the positive side, there was a salad bar at all meals and desserts.

This hotel is a very good option when visiting Lapland, in the center with pubs, restaurants, and shopping centers very close , and of course the beautiful river. The dining room offers beautiful views of the river.

No need to hire a care as the bus service is cheap and easy and stops outside the hotel. We organised all trips and activities when we arrived. You can do husky tides, reindeer rides, santa, skidoos, etc at Santa Claus Village. Everything can be organised easily when you get there. No need for the tours. We thought this looked very expensive in comparison. You will have a great time and this hotel fab!!!

This Is a very nice hotel by the river. Shopping and restaurants are walking distance. Santa village is about 8 km. away. Bus services are walking distance. Lapland travels is located in the same hotel and can make all arrangements however they are expensive. Suggest you hire a self drive car. The airport is about 6 km from he hotel on the same route to Santa village.
