The words shabby chic describe my room in Pohjanhovi. I prefer this kind of genuineness over what standard modern hotels offer. The history of this old hotel was also nicely presented in several show windows. My visit was during the pandemic so there were only a few other hotel guests. I enjoyed the quietness during my stay and loved the views to the near by river Kemijoki.
When we arrived at the Scandic Pohjanhovi, I was really excited about the location. Across the street from the hotel is a mall with shops and eating options, down the street were numerous restaurants and stores, and a short walk from the hotel along the Ounasjoki river was the Arktikum museum. Our room looked as though it had been recently updated. Two twin beds were pushed together and the bathroom was small - and the shower was very tight - but functional. At first look, it seemed like we were in for a great few days. But, after getting in bed, I saw a wad of hair under my pillow, hair strands were scattered around the sheets and floor, and the shower. Each day, hair - which was not ours - was around the room. We weren’t sure if things were not well cleaned from the previous guests or if it was the housekeeper’s hair. In any event, the attention to detail just wasn’t there. I certainly never walked around the room without my shoes on and I began to inspect everything before sitting or lying down. The breakfast buffet was complimentary but not very impressive. There was salad, cold cuts, cheeses, yogurt, fruit bread, and cereal. The hot dishes included oatmeal, eggs, bacon, meatballs, beet balls, weiners, Finnish pancakes, smoked reindeer cream cheese, lappish bread and cheese, juices, and hot beverages. While there were many food options, nothing was very flavorful and the hot dishes were not warm. They offered the same thing every day. One thing we did enjoy was the food at Restaurant Bord in the lobby. We went to eat near closing time one night and they were kind enough to serve us. We had pork schnitzel stuffed with reindeer and sautéed reindeer. We also got carrot cake and a chocolate coconut smoothie at the cafe adjacent to the restaurant. 3 stars overall...the room cleaning really needs work. …
The hotel’s location was great but we did not like the hotel a lot. The room we stayed was too old and needed re-decoration. The bathroom was very old too. But the staff was helpful and nice. If the hotel rooms are renewed, it will work.
very nice hotel , the hotel is clean and in a good location . the food is nice , We had breakfast and dinner there. the location is just near the river and when we was there the river was all ice and it was amazing . from the hotel you can walk 10 min and then watch the Aurora ( northern lights)
Hotel is very well located. You can reach whatever you want. Bus stop is at the front. Located near the river and area is quiet. We stayed 3 person in a room. Two buildings are connected with underground tunnel. You can enter throuh the end of the central building via your room card, you do not need to go via reception all time. All room facilites are functioning well. Heating and isolation is perfect, It was minus 26C and already warm indoor. Bath and toilet is adequate, if you need only function. Do not wait for luxus in the room, but everything was functioning. Room was clean and everyday room get cleaned, trash was emptied (we did not arrive before 16). Breakfast was fine you can find whatever you need. Specialities for Lapland was included, buttercream, berrysauces etc. Glutenfree food was available. You can drink tap water in Findland, do not buy bootled water. We did not have time to visit fin bath and pool.…
