Detailed Reviews
Just went on a wonderful 3 night stay to Lapland with Canterbury Holidays on the majestic nights holiday and wanted to share our experience and tips whilst they are fresh in my mind. Before I start let me just say this was such a wonderful holiday, extremely well organised and we had a believer of a daughter before we went and she thought this was a magical holiday and has come home believing in elves as well as Santa!!! Could not fault the organisation and tour guide for the amount of effort they all put in
Location:
We stayed in Pyha and at the Pyha hotel and I’m really glad we picked the hotel rooms and not their cabins. The cabins are quite a walk away from the hotel so definitely not for the faint hearted as the walk is a steep hill and in the snow.
Weather
It was cold -2 when we there which was Dec 13-16 but for Lapland people that was considered warm. It was bearable and with the right clothing the weather was not a problem
Hotel
The hotel is nice and the rooms are basic but you have everything you need (except tea and coffee in the rooms as that is apparently not a thing here). You need to know the hotel is super warm though! I mean 25degrees in the rooms all the time. Am saying this as I expected it to be cold and bought thick pyjamas for the family and it was unbearable!! So bring light sleeping clothes. Also for the evening you will want to change into normal clothes and a t-shirt and light jumper is enough. I wish I had bought but some easy to slip on shoes for the in the hotel as well. Reason being is for breakfast you don’t want to go down in all your gear and so typically you wear “normal “ clothes and then get changed. Which means your changing before 9am twice every day!!
Also the hotel has a clothes shop so don’t worry if you need extra clothes you can get them here. There is a bar and pool table too. Feels nice when you’re here
Food
The food is free for the package we were on and the food is basic but ok. They won’t win any awards for the food but if you want to pay and get an a la Carte meal you can, but honest the free food is like a 5/10 so it’s ok. On the bus you are out and about and don’t notice the need for food. They do stop for lunch but it’s worth bringing one or 2 small snacks for on the bus. Especially if you’re a family that gets a bit hungry. And on that front I wish I brought a water bottle for on the bus too.
Clothing
This is the big topic and here are my thoughts on this:
for everyone you need 3 layers and if the weather is like it was for us then 2 layers is fine. But any colder and you need 3.
Of course I bought way too much stuff, mainly because 3 days is not long and so you end up finding what you like to wear and wearing it most days. I am a slightly bigger woman and the suits are a snug fit, so what I found the nicest to wear was
layer 1 - some thermal tights
Layer 2 - some skin tight thermal leggings (I say skin tight because you can get different types and the thermal ones were good and I did that for one of the days but they are baggier and if I needed 3 layers this wouldn’t have been ok
Layer 3 - a pair of skinny jeggings
Alternatively for 2 layers I was happy with tights and a pair of thermal leggings with the fleecy lining. Note, no one ever sees your bottoms as you always have your suit on. Sometimes you undo it and so people will see what you have on the top.
For the top half - it’s 2 to 3 layers again.
In addition to this you need:
a pair of ski mittens
A pair of very thin gloves that you can wear inside your mittens (and operate your phone with, for the camera)
a scarf and ideally it is a cowl type thing and in fleece
A balaclava for when you are on the snow mobiles, especially for the kids
A hat and ideally it’s a woolly hat that you can wear inside a helmet, (so no big bobble on the top)
take some foot warmers as a must and hand warmers as a maybe. At -2 I only needed the foot warmers and my family didn’t need them, but I run cold
Camera-
there is almost no daylight at all. This makes it tricky for taking pictures, so if you’re thinking of buying the new phones that take great photos in the dark do it for this holiday
We had a fancy camera but honestly we only used our phones. I wish I hadn’t bothered taking my camera
You need a battery pack that is always charged as the phones loose life in an instant because of the cold
Northern lights
We didn’t see them. Don’t do this holiday for the northern lights. It’s unlikely to see them at this time of year
Bag for on the coach
Take a rucksack with you that you can fit extra layers in and snacks and water in for on the coach. It needs to go by your feet, so not too big!
Bad back or pregnant?
I’d ask to skip the husky ride. One of my favourite activities but the dogs are fast and you really feel every single bump. So have a think before you do it if this will be too much for you.
Things if we’d have done if we’d known
there is elves on sale that first night and they go quick. So I wish I’d bought her when I saw her. They are on sale on the last night toO
You can book and special bed time read with one of the elves and we didn’t do that. Wish we had
Souvenirs
we bought a real reindeer skin from the reindeer farm and I’m so glad. It’s a real nice reminder for me as an adult!
Finland is also the home of the Moomins (do you remember that cartoon when you were a kid?) well if you do at the supermarket they have some moomin stuff. Funny
There’s not really much to buy, so don’t expect to be bombarded with gift opportunities
Think this is it!
Oh and bring your Christmas jumper for the disco on the last night!
It’s a great holiday and one you’ll treasure for a long time
