My wife and I have dreamt about seeing the Northern Lights for years and have been looking at locations for such a trip. We finally found the time to go this year and decided that Lapland (Finland) was the right place for this.

There are obviously loads of options for places to stay at various price ranges, as well as a number of popular locations/towns. We decided to stay in Ivalo which is one of the airport towns in Lapland in order to minimize travel time and cost and due to recommendations from friends who have visited here previously.

During our accommodation research, we came across Guesthouse Husky which is located a few kilometers outside Ivalo town. The reviews from other guests were tremendous, the room cost very affordable for Lapland standards, and the fact that they raise and train huskies (which we love) made it an easy choice for us.

Guesthouse Husky is a family-run place which you feel immediately upon arriving. Everything is very chilled and down to earth, Outi and all the staff are super friendly and make you feel like family, there's newly baked bread every morning for the sumptuous breakfast, dinners are cooked with love and pride, and rooms are kept clean, cozy and traditional. The free-to-book sauna (rolling in the snow is optional) is fantastic and we used it every day. Basically everything you can ask for.

Outi will help you organize tours, taxis, winter clothing, and other things as required during your stay. We did one of the husky rides which are done with their own dogs, and we absolutely loved it. Getting the chance to ride and control your own sledge and dogs was just amazing!!! As a guest, you can also go pet the dogs any time you want which was an added bonus for us.

As for the Northern Lights (aurora), well you need some luck to be honest. We went for an organized trip standing on a frozen lake for 4 hours without seeing anything. But the next night we were just sitting at the guesthouse playing cards and monitoring the aurora activity on and app, and simply went out to check every 20 minutes to see if we could spot anything. To our luck, we had an amazing show around 1 am for almost 30 minutes with very strong sightings. Guesthouse Husky is in the middle of a forest with no light pollution, so it is a great place to view it.

So for us, Guesthouse Husky is a fantastic place to stay in Lapland and is truly highly recommended for all the right reasons.

Thank you again to Outi and the whole team!

The room was just what we needed: Clean, cumfy beds, enough space, great view into the Finnish forest. Outi and Lea (our two hosts) were so hospitable and always willing to help. The guesthouse is very well equipped with cross-country ski equipment and snow shoes (great for going on our own adventures). We did a fantastic 4 hour husky tour. This was an experience we will never forget. Juha (our guide) made fresh wurst soup at the halfway stop which was delicious and warming, and riding on a wooden sled while being pulled by huskies was an amazing experience. Thank you everyone at Guesthouse Husky for a really fantastic Lapland stay

My family of four stayed in the 4-bedded room. It was clean and spacious! What is definitely worth mentioning is the wonderful service provided by Lea and Outi! They patiently attended to all my queries before the trip. That’s not all. When my son accidentally left his newly bought winter jacket at their guesthouse, they actually went the extra mile to hold it for me and took the trouble to ship it back to my residential address across the globe in Singapore!

We had a wonderful stay at Guesthouse Husky! The lodging was very comfortable (we stayed in the family room). The rooms were clean, warm, and peaceful! Also, the dinners should not be missed. We had both Minna and Outi’s cooking and they are excellent chefs! Minna also makes delicious breads and pastries for breakfast! We went on a Husky tour, which was a highlight of the trip! The dogs are adorable and seem very happy and well cared for! We enjoyed spending time with the dogs before and after the safari. Guesthouse Husky is also conveniently located close to Ivalo, while feeling very private and peaceful! We highly recommend staying here on your Lapland trip with enough time to enjoy Husky safaris and delicious cooking!

Guesthouse Husky is a really special place. There are 6 rooms, each with its own bathroom. The beds were comfortable and there was lots of hot water. From our room we could see and hear the dogs. We were welcome anytime to go out and play with the dogs. We ate dinner 3 nights at the guesthouse. The food was fresh, good and each night was a different meal. You are welcome to buy whatever drinks you want in town and store in the refrigerator on the main floor and have them with dinner.

We did the 4 hour husky ride which was fabulous and would highly recommend it. We also did the reindeer safari which was okay. The guide we had was not a Sami and there was a long break during which he made a carving which was available to purchase. We also rented cross country skis and snowshoes. It is better to drive a little distance away from the guest house to ski or snowshoe. We drove to the national park and it was amazing.

We rented a car, which was a good option for us and I would recommend it for the flexibility.

The owner Outi, was extremely helpful in making our arrangements, answering my endless questions.

We saw the northern lights right from the guest house.

It could have been an amazing experience but, due to the horrible organization, it has been terrible. The place is wonderful but one of the two guides that kept our group was completely not prepared and useless during all the problems we have had along the ride. We complained with the owner which had a very arrogant approach at first and did not care at all about our discomfort. After a long discussion she then refunded only four parts (we were a group of 14…)

Guesthouse Husky was the best thing that happened to me during our Finland stay. The stay was nothing less than spectacular. The staffs are courteous, humble and lovely folks who make you feel so at home the moment you step in. It houses around 150 dogs mostly huskies and is surely a dog lovers paradise. Amazing vounteers take care of the dogs with so much love and passion. The dogs love having you around and the farm allows you to spend as much time as you want with them.
Another highlight of the stay was the opportunity to interact with fellow guests. You get to learn so much from them! It was so lovely interacting with each and every one I met there.
The safari rides that the farm offers are amazing! The enthusiastic dogs just take you places in true sense. Their energy is so contagious!
The cherry on top was definitely the Northern lights! You could get a glimpse of it right outside the guesthouse. We could see it all the nights we were there and boy what a show it was!
I loved spending each and every moment at the guesthouse. Believe me when I say I was so not ready to leave. I did leave with tears in my eyes and given an opportunity I would love to come back :)

We just have returned from our trip to Ivalo, where we have stayed in the Guesthouse Husky. It is a beautiful place in the woods, the chalet is cosy with comfortable beds and floor heating. The proximity to the kennel with the huskies makes it even more special. We have booked a dog sled ride starting directly from the house, and from the three dog sled rides I have had so far, this was by far the best! I must mention on that point that the dogs run fast and the track is rather sporty, but it was so much fun! Last but not least I want to mention Minna, the houskeeper on the spot, and the good soul of the house. She took care of us and our children in the best possible way, showed and explained us everything, and made us feel home far away from home. Without her the place would not be the same. All in all it was a wonderful experience, and I would definitively stay again there. To mention is that the place has been sold to the hotel group Northern Lights Village during 2024, and I hope that they will maintain the authenticity, the tranquility and the affordability of that place.

We had an amazing time at GuestHouse Husky. My friend and I chose the overnight Husky trip, which was very fun. We were a little nervous the night before, but driving the sledge was not difficult. As another reviewer noted, the huskies have one speed, and that is fast! Shoutout to our guides Konsta and Lewis, who made the five -hour journey to the cabin go very smoothly.

Upon arrival at the cabin, we helped un-harness the dogs and make the dog food. Konsta then made us a very nice dinner. The fire in the stove upstairs kept us warm while we slept.

The GuestHouse back in Ivalo is very clean and comfortable. We liked the home-cooked meals very much.

5/5 stars. Great location in the middle of the forest, friendly staff, excellent home cooked food (Finnish) and beautiful husky’s. Only stayed for 3 nights, wish we stayed more! Highly reccomended!

I would suggest to book the mushing makes me hungry tour or longer, as we did but we wanted to go for more. Next time! :)

Hi there Probably the snow is not thick enough for the husky ride there. But you can visit the lovely husky village there where they keep all dogs there. Regards, Steve

Hi Vanessa, Markvos is right...There are taxis outside the airport (It's a small airport so you can't miss them). Outi books the aurora tour with Ivalo Trek (but I think you can book direct). We also saw the lights at the guesthouse itself one evening.
