Basically the room was like a typical Finnish dorm room, not bad but nothing special to mention. Provided amenities are minimal so best bring your own if possible. Staff were nice by Finnish standards. Breakfast area was a bit small and got too full during peak time, so some had to take food to their rooms. Unfortunately one quite unforgivable thing I noticed just as we were leaving was that my bed sheet had MOULD on it. This is unacceptable and should be adressed by the management. The cleaners need to do a better job and not use mouldy sheets! Other than that, I was OK with the stay since we just used the place to sleep after a long day.
So basic, it was almost like camping! Coffee pot but no mugs, only had 2 glasses. Worst part was we arrived 1 week before the Opera season and had to go way across town for keys! My friend had driven us there, so we were fortunate but if had arrived by taxi from bus or train station, would have been in serious trouble! Patio table broken. Curtains quite sheer, so no darkening of the room during summer! I would say: Stay away! Oh yes, I forgot! A view was listed, but our only view was the back parking lot and a tall brick chimmney. I think, to extend the amenities discription, they listed "a toilet, a shower and a bathroom"! What? Only a stool, sink, and walk in shower !
The hotel is basic, but the price is so low I will stay there for another time too! We travelled during the last week of opening, and the keys we had to pick up from another hotel at the centrum. Also the breakfast was there. However for the price, again, the hotel was peaceful, the sheets were clean and towels fresh. The location also is a bit away from the centrum, but you can walk there via a scenery bridge and enjoy a perfect view to the castle.
Spacious comfortable room with basic facilities. Reception only open 0800-1600 but receptionist helpful. Easy walk to the castle and the town over the railway bridge. Breakfast good value. Easy parking at hotel. Internet only worked in reception.
We stopped over for one night in Savonlinna while enrouting to Joensuu. The location is reasonably good, within walking distance to the city (about 1.5km, quite scenic and romantic walk in a summer evening). It comes with free parking and the apartment is very spacious. It also provides all the amenities such as bathing gel, lotion, shampoo, conditional, towels etc. It is clean and functioning with a nice balcony facing the water (lake). However, the condition of the apartment is a little run down, and the balcony is a little under maintained (not so clean too). We were there in July, so there is literally no dark nights in this part of the world. The windows did not have any blinds, so I must use my eye cover to get a good night sleep (so remember to bring one, just in case!) There are four single beds, with two fans (no air-condition). It comes with breakfast and the choices were surprisingly good! There is nof WIFI in the apartment and the supply of utensils is a little pathetic, example there are four of us but only one pair of fork and knife, plus a spoon. There is a big fridge and good freezer, so we could buy some food from nearby supermarket (about 1.5km walk across a long bridge with good view of the Savon castle) and keep them for consumption.…
We didn't have much choice at time of booking with our visit coinciding with the opera season in the town's castle. While relatively clean and plenty of space in what is a 1 bedroom university dorm apartment outside of summer season, there is nothing attractive about this place from check in to check out. Was quiet and we slept well and had a hot shower in the morning but that's where the good news stops. It served the purpose for the night but never again. Reception not staffed consistently and we were told they are not there from 3pm with envelopes left for you to collect. The 'staff' we met were rude and useless. Parking was OK and free. There was wifi that worked reasonably in the lobby only. Breakfast area chaotic and a basic offering. Can walk to town in about 15 minutes but would only suggest doing this in daylight. Must be better in Savonlinna?…
Student housing turned into a "hotel" for the opera festival season. Clean and spacious rooms. Within walking distance of the opera festival. No air conditioning (usually not a problem in Finland, but July 2014 was quite hot).
There is nothing really wrong with this place - and it serves its purpose - but it is not really a hotel. However, it is functional, spotlessly clean and well-cared for. In tourist and opera season, demand for hotels far exceeds supply, so some blocks of student accommodation are pressed into service: This is one of them. The reception is friendly, helpful and informative - but is the sole member of staff outside breakfast time. The accommodation is made up of small, self-contained student apartments - think a suite hotel in the USA - basically furnished. Although there is a full kitchen, there are no utensils nor crockery - not even a water glass. There were two coat hangers in the closet. Decent plumbing, narrow beds. Nice view of the lake through the trees. The breakfast room contains far more tables and chairs than could ever be comfortably used and the buffet is fairly minimal but adequate. Nasty coffee. And the place - like Savonlinna - is very seasonal. On the day we arrived, we enquired about wi-fi and were told there was none. The next day, wi-fi suddenly appeared in the lobby (sic) and breakfast room for the start of the season. Simultaneously the town, which has seemed very empty the evening before filled to the brim for the start of the opera festival. It's about a 15-minute walk, across the railway bridge, into the center and Olavinlinna Castle for the opera. Or you can drive round; there is plenty of free parking at the hotel. Clientele seemed to consist entirely of opera goers. The Finns apparently like to get away for the summer to a forest, lake and log cabin and roughing it a bit. I suppose this is similar mutatis mutandis and can be judged like that. If you need accommodation for the opera and haven't booked 12 months in advance for one of the proper hotels, then you will need to use summer accommodation. We were there just a couple of nights, but had we been staying for a week say, then we could easily have turned our apartment suite into a more comfortable base by making a few minor purchases at the local supermarket: paper plates, glasses and a picnic on the balcony?…
It was not a planned trip to Savonlinna so i was looking for a hotel at the last minute and this was the only one available for a resonable price. I got a nice apartment with a bedroom and a living room with a kitchen corner equiped with everything you may need. There is no bathtube but a shower. No personal care products provided, only towels. On the grownd floor there is a breakfast room. It is served from 8 till 11 am. It is enough diverse, you won't be hungry. Although orange juice could be better :) I would recommend this hotel for families travelling by a car and willing to stay some time in Savonlinna.
