Throughout the night and morning there was a deafening noise that often woke me up. It sometimes stopped and, like a bass, resonated in the structures to a varying fast tempo. All night. There was also a loud commotion if someone walked past the front door (just steps). New rooms and negligible soundproofing. The worst night I've slept in a hotel, luckily the kids were asleep.
The spa was ok, partly old and too cramped for the number of customers. The water was pleasantly warm.
The staff was indifferent all around and they focus a lot on each other instead of customer service. The atmosphere was dull and evasive. We went to the wrong place for dinner, because there was a children's sports club there, which had a different buffet. There, too, was the dinner and the date, as well as the menu. The staff is busy and no one was interested in our arrival. School food buffet. No one stopped, advised, and after realizing this ourselves, we changed the place for dinner. When I told this at the actual dinner, the staff didn't react at all, no apologies, no sympathy, nothing. We weren't served in any way while eating (would we have liked food, drinks, etc.) The food was good, but we were like air.
An electric car can be charged from a regular socket for a reasonable price.
Breakfast ok.
We won't come again.
The hotel is situated in beautiful surroundings (good possibilities for walking) only about 5 kilometers from the city center of Kuopio.
We think that this is the best spa hotel in Kuopio region (better than Kunnonpaikka or Vesileppis which also are ok). The swimming pool department in Spa Hotel Rauhalahti is very good. There are pools for everyone from a baby to a grandmother. There are a swimming pool (20 meters long, depth 120-135 centimeters), two baby pools (34 degrees Celsius, depth 10-30 centimeters), two whirlpools (jacuzzis, 35 degrees Celsius), a hot water pool (37 degrees Celsius, depth 40-50 centimeters), a cold water pool (7 degrees Celsius, depth 110 centimeters), a warm outdoor pool (32 degrees Celsius, depth 145 centimeters), massaging showers and bubbles. There is also a water slide (23 meters long) which is suitable for everybody, especially for children aged 4-8 years.
The outdoor pool is quite big and it is warm also in the winter. It is wonderful to sit or swim in the outdoor pool under stars when the outside temperature is -10 degrees Celsius.
There are also saunas in the swimming pool department. The Roman Irish steam room is mixed for men and women. Finnish saunas are separated for men and women. The swimming pool department is open for hotel guests from 7 am to 10 pm. The steam room is open from 12 noon to 10 pm.
We love family rooms in the main building of the hotel. There are standard beds for 2 adults and an upper bed (a sleeping loft) for 2 small children or 1 big child. However, we think that it is better to put only one child in the sleeping loft and ask an extra bed for another child. Most of these rooms are non-smoking rooms and some of them have a balcony. Family rooms are situated on floor 2 (the entrance floor).
Some rooms may be a little bit shabby and worn out. Soundproofing isn't very good. Furthermore, the thermostat of our toilet's underfloor heating was cracking and clicking for the whole night. It was better to turn the thermostat off. After that it didn't make any noise. There are also apartment rooms (with or without an own sauna) and hostel rooms in separate buildings. Pets are allowed in some rooms.
Also plates in the hotel restaurant seemed to be worn out. However, both breakfast buffet, lunch buffet and dinner buffet were very good and tasty. There were even local specialties in the dinner buffet, e.g. Karelian rice pastries and kalakukko (fish in a bred).
The spa and swimming pools are situated in the ground floor (floor 1), restaurants (also dancing in many nights) on floor 2 and play room for small children on floor 3. There is also a hamburger restaurant on floor 1, a very good and big gym on floor 1 and a climbing wall (also badminton and floorball) on floor 1.
The historical Jätkänkämppä Lumberjacks Lodge mentioned in Lonely Planet and the world's biggest smoke sauna are situated 600 meters from the hotel.
There are many activities for everybody in the hotel or near the hotel. Rooms are big enough for families but some rooms may look a little bit oldish. The swimming pool department is very good and usually it isn't too crowded. However, there aren't big water slides there. The value is very good and we recommend the hotel for the whole family. It is absolutely worth a visit! A perfect place for relaxing!
The staff is very friendly, food at the restaurant was good - try fried vendace!
Breakfast was average.
On check-in, the staff were very friendly and our room was ready right away.
The hotel itself is quite old and badly in need of a refurbishment.
The room was small, with two low, twin beds with separate linen on each bed. There were two decorative cushions and a blanket over the end of the bed. These were quite old and the fabric reminded me of an old curtain!!
The bathroom was small with a shower with a shower curtain and one sink. Bathrobes are provided. If you want to go to the pool, you need to bring your towel from your room with you. However we did this one morning, used our towels to dry off while we were at the pool, and when we came back, the room had been tended to by housekeeping, but they had not replaced our towels.
Another thing to note about the room is that the curtains did not pull the whole way across the windows....in a country which has really long hours of daylight during the summer, this is a bit of a problem!!!
The swimming pool area is OK. There are a few pools here, a few children's ones, a slide, one big heated pool which goes outdoors and then another pool more suitable for swimming lengths in. There are some jacuzzi sections in the heated pool, but no separate jacuzzi tub. The saunas are segregated and are part of the changing rooms, and swimsuits are not allowed! However I believe this is the norm in Finland.
Breakfast was not great. There was a very poor selection, considering it is supposed to be a 4-star hotel.
We found sound to be an issue in the bedroom. I found it difficult to sleep (also due to the bed which was not comfortable!) but in the mornnings, especially, we could hear quite clearly, everyone who passed by our door. On the Sunday morning we were awoken by a baby screaming in another room!! It would not be so bad to hear what happens right outside your door, but you should not be able to hear sounds from other rooms!! Also there is a nightclub in the hotel and we could hear the noise from there in our room on the nights it was open.
The number 7 bus runs from right outside the hotel and it's about 20 mins to the centre of Kuopio which is quite handy.
There is also a holiday park as part of Rauhalahti, and you can rent cabins, or camp there. I think this might be better value than staying in the hotel.
In general, the hotel is OK but it was not worth €495 and it is certainly not a 4-star hotel. It desperately needs to be refurbished.

"Book a room from the Spa Hotel (main building). Apartments in separate buildings are good for big families and cross country skiers (Sotka building has better views). Apartments may be good for light sleepers, too. Hostel rooms are the cheapest alternative."Read full review
