It's a charming place indeed, but bathrooms need updating in order for guests to have a proprer shower. No privacy for hotel guests because of crowds that come for lunch. The service in the rooms, cleaning and bed making is hasardous .
Visited for two nights. The food was great, and the setting even nicer. On top of a hill overlooking the bay. Meals are served from a veranda with great views. Unfortunately our room (room 4) was not that great at all. Our room had no windows, with two doors in either end of the room. One door opens towards a corridor, the other towards the very nice veranda. It got unbearably hot and humid inside the room that we ended up opening the door to the corridor at night (corridor is used by other guests, so almost zero privacy). We had a chance to look at some of the other rooms, and it seems like most of them have at least 2 windows. I would imagine that they are not as stuffy. Needless to say, the bathroom (no windows, only a tiny extractor fan that was clogged up by dirt) became smelly after the first shower. In addition, our room was in need of some mainainace (leaking tap, doors that dont close, loose bracket for shower head, shower curtain rail about to come down. sqeaky bed etc). All things that can be very easily fixed. We asked for our clothes to be washed and the staff ended up hanging it to dry on our veranda. It's not like you pay big money for the view.....?? All in all the accommodation is not bad, but it seems like they are more interested in your euros than anything else.. …
Had the wonderful pleasure of spending last few days at this old plantation. Without air-conditioning, and an infrastructure unchanged since colonial times this is an amazing place offering True Luxuries like the sound of nature at night, and a kitchen where using only fresh produce from the own estate they serve the guests a seven courses meal each night. I enjoyed the traditional plantation setting, it was peaceful and quiet at night and allowed you to get close to nature, but also not far away from village life (just a short walk down the hill). The best part is for sure the restaurant and the wonderful food, breakfast and in particular dinner. I can see how even the pickiest guests would return, and I hope I will get to return too! Great, helpful and flexible staff adding to the experience.…
Roca Sao Joao dos Angolares is an old Portuguese farm house in São Tomé full of history. This is a no frills place, no luxury, just a traditional stay, but comfortable. The staff is kind and helpful and there is a very nice breakfast with locally produced products. Of course there is the restaurant of the well know owner of the Roca, which you should also try.
The food and hospitality here are fantastic and I stayed for 4 days with a hire car and used this as my base. The food is famous across the island and the degustation lunch is fantastic and good value too. The family who run it are so helpful and made my visit a pleasure.
