I qualify my comments by saying that, ending up as a consultant, I have traveled bus. class for decades and stayed in numerous hotels all over the world. I retired early partly because I was no longer committed to my work, but also I was BORED stiff with bare, soulless hotels. BIRJER JARL is different!! Importantly the staff are well mannered, helpful, and attentive ... no worries there. It is also right in the middle of "old town" Stockholm, walking distance to Gamlastan, and 50m to the local ferry stop, and 200m to Viking international ferries. The rooms are very variable, and I suspect that variation is also seasonal; are you below the Summer bar or not? I have read many reviews and can see that there could be problems with some people in high season, so I think it best to describe our experience and what we saw. We stayed in the Captain's cabin. We had booked the Superior Suite but there was a mix-up with my card ... and they upgraded us! We did however look at the superior room, it is as the site photos suggest. We also walked past the smaller cabins ... one bunk wide! This is an old cruise liner, circa 1960s. Had you taken a cruise on this ship 60 years ago you would not have spent much time in your cabin and would have been more interested in being on deck; day and night. That is how I feel you now need to approach Birger Jarl. The staff are lovely, the bars are fine, breakfast was quiet and substantial, the foredeck terrace is available to all .... but the real benefit is the closeness to Gamlastan and the ferries to the rest of the islands (Stansten wildlife reserve, Abba museum, Viking museum etc etc). Be open minded, this is different to boring hotels!

Walls are paper thin and you share your bathroom in a 2 door system with room next door. Had 2 Chinese men noisily getting up at crack of dawn & trying to break into my room when they heard a female voice. It’s just not safe.

Breakfast ok. Sheets, bathroom clean. Location is good. The room is hot and stuffy. Even with a fan it’s awful. The smell of what I think is mould or maybe just rot, hits when you open the door and lingers in your stuff after you leave. The bed is terrible. Worn out thin mattress. One outlet, so chose between the fan or your phone. The noise is incredible. If the room next has a snorer you will know, you can hear them brush their teeth. People banging in all night. I was super excited about the boat. I’m not hard to please and use hostels regularly but this was nasty. Find a different boat.

Quite cheap. Accommodation in this place can be described as an interesting experience. However, if you are with your family, I strongly advise against. Stuffing and cramped space, 4 people in a small cubicle - I suspect that the prison cells have more space. I didn't feel safe there, lots of people are spinning around, they look into your room, and you can't breathe without the door open. It is better not to mention sanitary conditions. Breakfast was fine.

A tip for those who are dissatisfied with the accommodation which is usually not what you expected. If you have booked through one of the hotel booking sites (i.e. hotels.com, booking.com) then contact them via email after your stay and complain and so they usually compensate with a voucher which in each case is usually 50-75% of the hotel cost. After I stayed at the M / S Birger Jarl Hostel & Hotel I complained to hotels.com who refunded almost the entire amount. Complaining to M/S Birger Jarl Hostel & Hotel doesn't lead anywhere. I have experience of that myself.

Stayed here with my cousin for the experience of sleeping in a cabin ship, and that's what we got, ultimately. First of all, get the bunk-bed cabins if you are a backpacker -- even carry-ons were a bit of a bother to drag around. Backpacks only. The bunk-bed cabins are very minimal, but we were not expecting anything more to be honest. Claustrophobes beware, because the window is tiny. The only thing that niggled us was the shared bathroom that has two locks on either side of the cabin. One time the cabin the next door forgot to unlock the door on our side, rendering us unable to use the bathroom. Very annoying. All in all, we spent our days in Stockholm mostly outside (the nearest station takes a bit of a walk), and made sure we got back truly spent and tired -- the only way for us to be able to sleep without complaints. OK place to stay if you're looking for experience, but think again if you're looking for comfort.

Visited MS Birger jarl during may 2019. The room smelled horrible of the stools and toilet drains. Staff tried to fix the issue but only made it worse. Pointing out the problem afterwards and the staff did not think it was strange that it smelled sewer in the room and thought it should have helped with the action that they tried with. The staff was not at all interested in compensating the stay. Cleaning was neither made before our stay. Strongly discourage visiting MS Birger Jarl.

We booked a standard cabin for two. When we entered the room, we were amazed where such a loud noise came from. It turns out that a powerful ventilation shaft passes through the ship. The feeling that you are inside the engine or reactor, so it hurts the ears. Let me remind you that this ship has not been sailing for a long time and how it produces sound in the cabin of such a force is beyond explanation. We asked the administrator to replace the number, because it is dangerous for human health. But finally we were refused. The administrator told us that he was not able to solve such a problem, and the manager could not answer. We are very surprised that in Sweden with a high safety culture this is possible. We ask the authorities to note that the operation of this ship as a hotel is carried out in violation of safety standards and carries the risk of harm to human health. By the way, if you arrive in the morning, you will not be able to leave your luggage for storage, because the reception is closed until 3:00 pm. We had to carry luggage with us in Stockholm for half a day.
