I was at the Kastro hotel for some days for business reasons.
It is located in downtown in a quiet area. It is 5 minutes walk from the bus station and less from the Venetian Fortress (sea Harbour area).

Heraklion was a 1 night stopover before going on a boat the next day. The hotel is close to the port which served our purpose. Hotel was clean, close to many restaurants, and located in a quiet, safe neighborhood.
Having decided that a 3rd night in the Thalori traditional village hotel wasn't for us (see separate review) I took a booking at the first hotel in Heraklion that seemed reasonable. Did we strike lucky.

There are beaches at a distance of max 10 minutes with a bus or car, but there were not so nice as other known beaches. i recommend searching for the best beaches, i liked Voulisma, aprox 30 min drive.
