The breakfast at the hotel is good and has a plethora of options as does the dinner service although sometimes with an unclear theme. The staff in the restaurant were a bit hit and miss, previously we would have finished our main courses and the plates would be left. We were not told how to pay for drinks and at times left waiting until after we had finished our mains to be then served a small 250ml soft drink for €4 a go.
The beech and pool areas are clean and the staff are attentive and help you to find and set out sun beds and offer drinks throughout the day which is positive and the beach staff generally seem friendly.
The surrounding area and the town of Elounda is very nice awash with excellent eateries and bars (much better quality and prices compared to the hotels offerings and is very clean and a large variety of excursions that are very well priced including a 5 hour trip including lunch and drinks and multiple swimming trips for only €25pp.
All in all an average hotel experience, needing significant improvement to bring it up to the ‘five star platinum experience’ that is promised. Do not be fooled by the leading hotels of the world label.
Beach & Pool are well maintained never a problem getting a sunbed.
You can walk into Elounda in about 15 mins if you want a choice of bars/restaurants for a change of scene and a taxi back is 6 euros.
Could not have asked for a more perfect restful break after the last 18 months thank you to all the staff at Elounda Bay palace.
George organised our luggage off the turnstiles and we set off pretty quickly and before we blinked we were in our transfer vehicle arranged via email by the fabulous hotel reception team before we left the UK.
Our transfer vehicle was loaded with wet wipes and a bottle of water each to help ease any thirst we may have had lingering. Our driver made us feel at ease right from the moment George had introduced us earlier. With his dulcet tone, he held a fine and non-intrusive conversation for the duration of our minute drive to Elounda Bay Palace.
Then the hotel went up a gear by settling us in after providing us with complimentary cocktails whilst we waited to be ushered to our Deluxe Sea View which in actual fact was transformed to one of a strip of 4 private apartments overseeing the most amazing view of the mountains. We had been upgraded!!
Elounda Bay Palace went up yet another gear when an unforeseen circumstance took hold but Yanis's expression was "everything happens for a reason" and with his resilience, upgraded us again into the Mediterranean Villa with an illuminated private pool, a courtyard, 2 en-suites and a generous amount of living space!!
Thanks Yanis!
The magic continued with more excellent service provided by the entire team including, Monolis with his conversational style, Elias (who adores his 2 Greek Shepherd dogs), making the most amazing cocktails whilst wearing a smile that settled you into a fine evening, Nico with his talent for Guest Relationship Management, Victoria, Maria and many more names of individuals making a team of finely balanced experts at their trade!
Eirini! The provider of fine entertainment with her musical genius created an ambiance of relaxation involving very fine music!
In summary?
The food is fantastic, the staff are a team of gifted individuals who excel at their craft, the guest relation team go the extra mile at every opportunity, the accommodation is excellent and the hotels handling of a COVID safe environment has been very impressive.
Final word goes to Dimitris who has led the entire team with the skills and mentality of a real tactician, a leader with a passion for hospitality on a very different level but far more important is that, his entire team genuinely adore him!
This visit was our 4th and we plan to return next year to continue savoring the most amazing views of Crete!
Most rooms are within easy reach of the two small beaches or the large pool. There were plenty of sunbeds available for everybody although it would probably be a challenge if it were fully occupied. The beach staff do a fantastic job of trying to keep everybody happy and that is the big plus point of this hotel. All of the staff go out of there to make sure that your needs are met – Front of house, housekeeping, dining, watersports etc couldn’t be faulted.
Dinner is a buffet which was very good with a wide variety. You also have the option of dining at the many a la carte, most of which are situated in the sister hotel, Elounda Beach, next door. If you do you get a credit of ¢30 per person. This will cover about half of the bill.
Drinks & watersports are expensive but that’s not uncommon. Over two weeks we spent €1,600 on soft drinks, waterskiing & jet skiing and one meal at an a la carte restaurant. We also spent €1,300 chartering the Catamaran for a day which was brilliant, and €560 on scuba dives. The diving was also surprisingly good.
In summary we were very happy with Crete and our choice of hotel.
Was self service. The variety was reasonable, however there were times when I found it difficult to find food that I liked. Even though it was September there were children running around while we were carrying food.
Rooms good, clean and staff . If you book do it through a holiday company such as TUI. We booked through the hotels Honoured Guest ,payed full cost outright when booked, should have been given full refund under the booking agreement, If we had done this via Agent we would have our refund
Food is outstanding. There is only one buffet restaurant for breakfast and dinner but we were there two weeks and never ate the same thing twice. There are two lunch restaurants on site and you can dine at the specialty fish restaurant on the pier and if on half board you get an allowance of 30 euros per person. There are also three other specialty restaurants in the sister hotel Elounda Beach which you can take a buggy ride to. Food in these is superb. We never had a bad meal in any of the restaurants. However be prepared as they are quite expensive and all drinks are very expensive. I asked the Manager about this and he explained as they are a Leading Hotel of the World they have to adhere to their pricing structure. However we did notice that the two bars were quite deserted at night.
Usual water sports available and two small but fantastic beaches. All serviced by beach staff who bring out a fresh sunbed towel every time a bed is needed. No sunbed wars here and although there were not loads of sunbeds there was always one available even mid afternoon. There is also a call button on the parasol and they will bring drinks to you.
Our room was seafront and very modern with a great shower. The Management had upgraded us but I still thought the room was a little small but great to sit there in the evening with a glass of wine after dinner.
Not much in the way of entertainment except an occasional piano player.
The hotel is 15 minutes walk from Elounda or if too hot a 5 min taxi ride (7 euros) There are an unlimited amount of restaurants and bars in Elounda Harbour and I have reviewed the ones we went to separately. All great.
All in all a great hotel and we will be back. If I have to find fault I did not like the discrimination with your room beach towels. Suites and bungalows had yellow ones and the rest of us had blue ones. Not a big just annoying.
Both restaurants at lunchtime had a good choice of food and had lovely views of the bay.
We stayed in a Mountain View room (213) which was very dated and noisy as it was right over the main path and you could hear deliveries arriving from early morning. However the rooms are very clean and sufficient if you are on a budget.
If the hotel had a bit of money spent on it then it could be really lovely as the views and location are excellent. Little things like the seats in the restaurants are old and stained and the reception area is dark with old fashioned furniture. If you are thinking of booking just bear in mind it was built in the 70’s so if you like really modern and trendy stay in the more expensive modern rooms.
We went out every night apart from one as Elounda, Plaka and Aghios Nikolias are only a taxi ride away and a great night out. We did a trip on the Happy Train which was fantastic and that’s how we discovered the beautiful village of Plaka. You don’t need to prebook, just turn up half an hour before departure (12 noon) at Elounda beach. The tour lasts 4 hours including lunch at a taverna which was really tasty and cheap although beware of the wasps!
All in all we had a fantastic time but the hotel is more of 4 star than 5 star and we probably would choose a new hotel when we return to Crete.
Location - It has a fabulous location and is only a 15 minute walk to Elounda town itself which has lots of bars and restaurants and is very picturesque. There is also a supermarket close by for any snacks etc. The sea is crystal clear and the beach was well maintained. We also didn't have to worry about trying to get beach beds as there were plenty available.
Service - from the start to the end of the trip every staff member from reception to the restaurant were very helpful and happy to chat with us every day of our stay. Despite the pressure of large conferences taking place, the staff still looked after us and made us feel very welcome. Mariaa and her partner who cleaned our rooms always had beaming smiles and it was lovely walking back into our rooms with their thoroughness and the flower arranging every day.
Food - we were half board and therefore made the most of the buffet at breakfast and dinner. The food was very good and with all the allergen labels available for each dish, it was very helpful – not something that we have seen in other restaurants. There were plenty of options each night!
Spa – I had the best massage I have ever had and the facilities were 5*. We also spoke to a couple of other vacationers who had used the spa who also said it was the best massages they had had.
We are already looking to book again for the same time next year! Thank you for helping us to have a wonderful and relaxing holiday!!!
"Avoid the Thalassa restaurant as it was extremely expensive and the food was basic at best. The seafood rissoto was inedible. "Read full review
