This was a wonderful trip, from the excitement of seeing the island in the distance as we sailed in, to the awe and sometimes sadness at the tales of hardship and endurance in Europes last remaining leper colony. Amazing to think that this place only closed as a colony in 1957

Good day out island really interesting as the last keeper clolony in Europe it closed in 1957. It's been restored well and would recommend Victoria hislops lovely book "the island to read before travelling. We sailed from plaka another lovely little place very friendly, and also visited the beach in elounda, would love to come back to this part of...

We ignored all the 'packaged trips' and hired a car and drove to Plaka. From there boats were regular and fares could be paid close by. We sat and had a drink and a snack looking over at the island trying to imagine what it must have been like to wave goodbye to a loved one and knowing they were...

Make sure you have a guide on this trip. It's not cheap if you do the full day. Bbq was okay. Would not bother with it if I had known there was no English guide telling you the history of the island....

We took the boat from Plaka - only €8 compared to the €50 from the hotel! The little boats run every 15 mins from the harbour in Plaka, and take you around the island to the east before landing on the west side of the island. The walk around the island is steep in some places, so we left the...

We visited this place in a guided tour with a small party of 7 we took a ten minute boat trip to the island and had a leisurely stroll around the island taken back in time. Footings can be uneven so may be difficult to some with walking difficulties overall I would say 1-1.5 hours to see the place with...

A good trip out. Spent the morning in Agios Nickalous then drove up to Plaka for a 8 Euro boat trip to the island. The trip is advertised as 4 Euros, but that is one way so unless you are a good swimmer, I suggest it will be 8 Euros for most. A further 8 Euros are needed to enter...

We drove to Plaka which is opposite the island and took a boat over from there. 8 Euro each for the boat and 8 Euro to get on the island. Wonderful place and so sad. We preferred to go from Plaka as there is no set return time you can spend as long as you want. You must see this...

We picked up a 'Soinalonga boat' from nearby Elounda. you can park there for free. there are plenty and this particular company departs every half an hour. You can buy tickets by the beach or in a travel shop across the street up till 11 o'clock at night (for next day) it's a lovely twenty minute journey for €10pp. Once...
