What a great hotel, ideally located for many of the wonderful historical sights of Athens as well as being on the doorstep of Plaka and it's multitude of Restaurants and shops. We stayed in a double superior room with a wonderful view of the remains Temple of the Olympian Zeus and breakfast on the roof terrace with a view of...

While the Athens Gate Hotel gets a 4-star rating, there are plenty of reasons for fewer stars. The room, while having spectacular view of the Garden of Zeus, was small and had fewer places to store our clothes and other items than our room in the cruise ship even though it was smaller. A glass for drinking never did show...

Staff was nice and helpful. Rooms were clean and well kept. Fairly good size rooms for a hotel in Athens. BEAUTIFUL views from rooms and rooftop bar/restaurant. WiFi free in lobby or rooftop. Great location - easy to walk to sites or public transportation. Only problem we had was we were unable to get a parking spot in their garage,...

We stayed 3 nights. Rooms were a little small but very clean; breakfast was very good. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Rooftop view of the Acropolis was spectacular! While we were able to enjoy the view while having breakfast, we wanted to enjoy it at night. So we ate dinner there and the food and view were great! We...

We had a great 4 nights for 3 deal and were upgraded on arrival. Brilliant location and stunning views from the restaurant at breakfast and a drink at night. Reception staff very helpful and friendly. It is noisy from traffic on the main road but views are stunning. Well placed to visit the sites and we enjoyed walking through the...

This is our fourth stay at the Athens Gate. It is a small hotel in a great location. The roof bar /restaurant is sophisticated and has a terrific view of the Acropolis. Breakfast is delicious and is included with your stay.

There are a number of medium-sized hotels in the area, but this one has not only a great view from the rooftop, but a quite good restaurant on the rooftop. So you can get the view in the morning at breakfast or any time thereafter. The hotel is also near the subway as well as close to a stop of...

In the heart if Athens with a vista of the acropolis from the roof restaurant you can literally touch the Parthenon. Small confined rooms, they are clean and neat. You get value for money as it's about convenience, location and suitability.

I found the Athens Gate a bit expensive for what it's worth. The location couldn't be better. Walking distance to the Acropolis and Plaka but it is shabby, Service is OK but not great, and so is breakfast. There are better hotels in the area. My recommendation: go somewhere else.

Staying in Thissio / Makriyanni

Neighbourhood Profile
Thissio / Makriyanni
Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianised Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centrepiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.
