Nestled in a prime location, the Hotel Grande Bretagne garners acclaim for its cleanliness, stunning views, and a fusion of historical charm with modern luxury. Guests commend the hotel's luxurious amenities, such as its elegant spa and restaurants offering panoramic vistas.
Despite its grandeur, some visitors find the rooms small and the furnishings in need of an update. Moreover, while the service is lauded for its excellence, the high cost has left several travelers questioning the overall value.

We had a great 2-night stay in August 2024. We picked this hotel because of its central location and the fact that it offered an adjoining 2-bedroom suite that could accommodate our family of 5. The hotel reeks of regal luxury. Since we were staying in a suite, we were advised to head upstairs to the VIP check-in lounge. As soon as we arrived, we were all greeted with a welcome drink and a seamless check-in experience.
One of the highlights was having breakfast at the rooftop restaurant, which offered an unparalleled, un-obstructed view of the parthenon sitting atop the Acropolis. The food, served buffet style, was absolutely delicious, but that Acropolis view was the main course! Our suite also offered a direct view of the Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Solder. So we had a lovely time watching the changing of the guard from our private hotel balcony!
Seriously, staying at this hotel felt like we had become members of a royal family (although only for 2 days!). The location is also perfect because staying here ensures you're a relatively short ride to all of the major attractions.

This is a luxurious haven steeped in history, perfectly situated in the heart of Athens. Its prime location near Syntagma Square puts you within walking distance of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the city's best shopping and dining areas. The hotel’s rich heritage is evident from the moment you step inside, with elegant decor that blends classical design, all the decor was saved from the historical moments this hotel was built in.
Rooms are not that spacious but offer breathtaking views of the acropolis, while you are at dinner at the roof top restaurant, or if you have a room facing syntagma square guards change, even at mid night, you can see it through your window! No words to describe how lucky were to be located there. The rooftop restaurant provides not only delicious dinners overlooking the lighted city and acropolis, but also at breakfast, it’s so nice to sit at the veranda with a cup of coffee and fantastic breakfast with a breathtaking view of acropolis.
The hotel's central location also makes it easy to hop on and off buses for city tours, adding convenience to your stay. All small bars and restaurants are at your step. Souvenir shops, walking distance to plaka square etc.
Inside, the hotel offers a range of top-notch amenities, including a tranquil & super amazing spa zone, where you can get ice shower, various saunas and feet massage after a long walking day in Athens, and a beautiful indoor pool for those who likes to swim. The attentive service ensures that every aspect of your stay is flawless. For those seeking both luxury and a deep connection to the history this hotel is an unbeatable choice.

We stayed here the end of December and very much enjoyed it. Location is fantastic- lots of places to eat nearby, walkable to the acropolis/plaka/etc but the best part was that the square still had the holiday lights and decorations up which made it lovely. The staff is very professional without being stuffy. Breakfast was very good- lot's of options and it comes with a great view! We didn't eat other meals there but did enjoy the bar for cocktails- they were not cheap but the bartender was superb and I love it when the bartender knows what they are doing. The room was a great mix of old world style and modern amenities. Would definitely stay here again!!!

They say it is a “classic” hotel. No. It's an old hotel about to become old. And when you pay the money they ask for a room, something else is demanded. Not a collection of old things, cared for but not renovated, that make you think that it is not worth what you are paying. For example. You have to leave the bathroom to dry your hair. There are no plugs. And you have to do it at the desk, where you have to unplug the computer and look at yourself in a mini mirror they have there. On the desk, there is a table lamp, which only turns on if you turn on all the lights in the room. If not nothing. The shower is very small and the toilet is positioned in such a way that it is difficult to cut the paper… All nonsense. Furthermore, there is no way to be able to put on makeup with any certainty. Because there is not light. Anyway, in my opinion, it is a very expensive hotel that has remained stuck in time and is outrageous. The little armchair, the old carpet, the bathroom... the headboard of the bed... Otherwise, the bed is very comfortable and the staff is very friendly.

The hotel is beautiful however the welcome and the experience was less satisfactory.
Prior to travelling to the Grande Bretagne for afternoon tea (booked for a Monday at 4PM), we called the hotel to enquire about parking and/or valet parking as we were accompanied by an elderly lady with restricted mobility. We were assured that valet parking was available and there would be no problems in stopping outside and having the car parked securely. On arrival, the concierge advised that no such arrangement was available and only after some 3-4 minutes of debate, did he agrees "exceptionally" to accommodate us.
We were immediately shown too our table but I was a little surprised that no one offered to take our coats and instead, we had to leave them on adjacent chairs.
The service was good but our elderly companion requested a light afternoon tea with the addition of a simple omelette but was told that this wasn't possible. A request for scrambled eggs was referred to the kitchen but the chef allegedly said that eggs could only be served at breakfast time. The serving staff apologised and referred the matter to a senior colleague who abruptly said "If you want eggs, you come before midday". We were astounded that a hotel of this standard, charging the prices they do, was unable to provide something as simple as a cooked egg.
Our elderly companion, who was treating her guests to an Athens experience was extremely disappointed and felt it necessary to apologise to us for the poor experience.
Overall - disappointing for the Marriott chain.

This is a luxury hotel in the center of Athens. The location can’t be beat- it’s central to the square and you can walk to shops and stores. It was Christmas and the beautiful decorations and lights are in full display. We got a complimentary upgrade to a suite - we felt so fortunate! The suite is absolutely luxurious - a king size bed with super comfortable sheets and pillows , a full walk in closet with a safe, a huge bathroom with a shower and tub, and a separate living room. The suite came with a 24-hour butler who can help with sights, tickets and reservations. We felt so pampered at the hotel. Service was impeccable! Nothing to complain about and our stay reminded me of what it’s like to have the experience of a true 5-star luxury hotel!

We spent 2 nights there at the end of August with my wife, beautiful location, beautiful building well located in the center. The place smells of history, brings out the experience of the building which has seen many people pass through it (Zelenski for example during our visit). Negative points, we were placed in a room on arrival that had nothing to do with those we had seen on the internet when booking, we were disappointed and it took a lot of discussion with reception before being accommodated. finally in a decent room corresponding to those we had imagined booking (a website should not lie or at least not too much in its photos…) Then, we are asked if we have come for an occasion, yes, we are celebrating a wedding anniversary for a long trip to Greece, we are offered a “champagne” for 8 euros… honestly the cheapest gift ever received in a 5 stars, we obviously appreciated the gesture but sincerely, next time, don't offer anything because it's not good. Just a word would have been enough. Afterwards it is a large hotel (in terms of size), the staff is present but it remains very impersonal, quite cold and we never felt any particular warmth (even though we love Greece and its people). Very positive point on the other hand, we had a magnificent place with a view of the Parthenon for the evening dinner on their rooftop. On the other hand, the dishes are worked but without much logic, correct tastes but too small quantities (it's not a starred one either). But what a view! A mixed result therefore, deserves to work more on its palace side, we are far from it compared to other European standards.

What a great hotel! From the moment we walked in quite weary from our travels, we were met with impeccable service & genuine kindness from each person working at this hotel. We were grateful that we could check in early. The staff were kind enough to recognize that we were celebrating our 30th anniversary so a chilled bottle of Prosecco & strawberries were delivered to our room. The pool was the perfect place to relax where the swim soothed our muscles after travel. We had a delicious dinner on the rooftop restaurant while taking in breathtaking views of the Acropolis. This hotel is in a great location right across the street from the Parliament building where you can see the guards. Syntagma Square is right in front of you with lots of shopping & restaurants nearby. The Acropolis is a short taxi ride, subway ride( you’re close to a station) or walk.

The staff and the public parts of the hotel are superb. The rooms are shockingly poor for the price. We were charged about 2,000 euros per night and shown a shockingly small and outdated room on the 7th floor. The tiny bathroom was last renovated in 2004 with a combined bath and shower small and outdated. The bedroom was unreasonably small and lacked all the basics of a luxury hotel room of this price; there was a very tiny tv, very old furniture, no full length mirror and no feeling of luxury. On the night tables we were given one small carton of water - without a glass. The wardrobe was so small it could hang only 2 full length outfits. We were shown two more rooms and settled for the final one which was at least livable for two people, but not luxurious in relation to the price. The St Regis in NY and the Gritti Palace in Venice charge similar rates but really deliver luxury.
This hotel commits highway robbery!

Truly a grand hotel, our 5 night stay was nothing short of excellent. Each and every staff member we encountered was warm, friendly, and accommodating. We especially thank our concierge Nicholas for all his help in arranging our activities and great recommendations for dining and night life spots. Our room was beautiful and elegant, so many details, I loved the upholstered headboard and crystal chandelier. The bed was very comfortable with crisp but soft linens, we slept great! Beautiful marble bathroom with separate shower and decent size bathtub. We had room service one night - delicious! They gave us the option of having it delivered all together or in courses, that was a first for us, I was definitely impressed. The location is ideal, right in the heart of downtown, across from Parliament, the area was clean and safe to walk around at night. This hotel is definitely pricey but it’s a one-of-kind gem with a different feel, it transports you back in time as soon as you enter the front door, it’s worthy of royalty.
