#9 of 152 hotels in Porto
Travellers' Choice
Torel Avantgarde is a five-star boutique hotel in Porto that opened in September 2017, and already won 3 prestigious awards: a World Luxury Hotel Award in 2018, a Prix Villégiature | Awards and a Seven Star Award. Like Avantgarde artists, we wanted to create something completely new. Our vision was to establish a place where art takes centre stage in every way. The result is Torel Avantgarde, a space to live art, to touch art, and to feel the heart and passion of the artist in the various spaces : in the 49 individually designed rooms, at the reception, in the flower room, at the Digby restaurant, at the Calla Wellness & Spa and, of course, in all our rooms. Torel Avantgarde is located in the heart of Porto, in the area of Restauraçao – just beside the Instituto de Vinho Verde and close to important parts of the city: 200m from the Palacio de Cristal, 500m from the Clerigos Tower, 750m to the Rua das Flores, 800m to the Avenida Aliados - and in the heart of the art district of Porto, only 5 minutes from Rua Miguel Bombarda.

Service in a 5 star hotel is everything and when you set foot in a property (in our case, we drove up) , you needn’t worry about being ‘looked after’. This could’ve been a five, but instead I gave it a 3.5. Pros: This hotel is clean and new; they even celebrated a 4 year anniversary (so really it has only been operating 2.5 years in COVID time). The staff were friendly, the quality of the furnishings and decor were at a high level as we like our hotels to be smartly designed and furnished. And the views couldn’t be better anywhere else. We stayed in the Charlie Chaplin room which shares the same views as the restaurant overlooking the Douro river and it was magical. This was an Executive Royal room which was reserved for us after we booked the Torel 1884 and they had to shut down after a guest contracted COVID — a very responsible and hard decision. So you know they are taking protocols seriously to prevent the spread. The location is slightly off the centre (which isn’t bad because it has spectacular view points and it’s quieter than being in the centre of town), but is about 7-15 minute walk to all the key attractions. Cons: The negatives got started the moment we drove into the hotel (or in our case, attempted to squeeze a parallel park in the gap of the entrance from the street, but ended up doubled parked and disrupted a busy traffic road). As friendly as the doorman was, he weren’t sure about the parking options around and sent us to a car park located in Palácio Cristal not knowing the rates. They did have a car park on site which was currently under construction, so they should know how to properly divert guests with cars, no? He called one of the managers on duty who entered the car park address into our Google maps and we were sent on our way. Unbeknown to us later, the parking rate became €79 CASH when we checked out and retrieved the car — so we had to go to the nearest bank ATM and withdraw the cash. This would have been very useful information to know having been sent to that car park by the manager. Instead, they had not prepared us with this information. So before we even stepped foot into the hotel, the experience was a bit stressful. Once we finally checked in the front desk was friendly, but didn’t really seem overly-apologetic about our story of the stressful parking experience. We were successfully checked into our room and found the amenities good, but lacking in details. For instance, the bathrobes and slippers were sized small (usually the robes are sized much larger to accommodate all body types). Also the bathroom had no door and the toilet was only separated by a half glass partition, so there is zero privacy — I was dashing down to the common area bathroom to get some privacy. The closet has adequate numbers of hangers, but they were the one without hooks (locker room style pin-to-notch as they cannot be removed from the closet and annoying when you want to hang out an outfit). The room had a terrace with stunning views and included a candle-it lantern, but no matches/lighter. When I had called reception to light this lantern and they said that it is not to be lit (even though clearly previous guests have lit it) and that is was merely a ‘prop’. They continued to tell me that they will “not allow lighting candles, but cannot prevent guests from doing so...” So then why tempt guests with a real prop candle in the first place??? Overall, it wasn’t a disappointing stay, but it certainly couldn’t claim it’s 5-star status and it really just came down to details and customer service. If you go to any Four Seasons hotel (where the room rates are not that far off from the Torel properties), every single detail is managed by every staff member and the guest isn’t left with the feeling of conflict during their stay. The management team at Torel properties could benefit from reading Isadore Sharp’s book on his hotel empire.

The hotel wasn’t clean, I emailed management and received initial apology but the next day it was the same. Bins not emptied in the toilets, the pool area littered with trash and food and towels left from the day before. It meant you couldn’t relax anywhere around the hotel. Also found the service poor. I don’t think they enough staff working. The room was beautiful.

We are a family of six and booked three “Executive Deluxe Suites” for our stay, each room located on the same corner of the hotel but on different floors. We would classify the hotel as boutique as it wasn’t large. Each room had a balcony (one room had two), with views to the Douro. The queen beds were comfortable, with an honor bar and coffee maker. The hotel itself was very hip and trendy, with interesting design and decoration. The breakfasts were very good, with a wide selection and a nice offering of coffees and fresh juices. We also had dinner at Digby (the same restaurant where breakfast is served) - the service and meal was very good. There were both indoor and outdoor seating options, and the views were great.

Loved our stay here. Very comfortable/luxurious room and we had an amazing view of the Douro river and city. Staff were so friendly and helpful with our requests as well. Would recommend to stay here if you’re visiting Porto and if you can, book the Coco Chanel room.

I wanted to love this hotel but I did not. The front desk staff were great but they had to constantly make up for a lack of standards for a five star hotel. On arrival there was not a place to park to get out luggage and the front desk woman had to carry in all our bags. There were no bathrobes, the knob in the shower came off and there was no maintenance person until the next day, we had booked a tour and even after several emails to them they had “lost” our confirmation, they did not provide separate beds that I had also emailed about in advance several times, the breakfast service was confused and unattentive. I understand that we came in at the end of covid but they did not look understaffed. This was our last stop in Portugal after staying at other 5 star hotels and Hotel Torel Advatgarde did not deliver especially for the price of the room. I think you can do better at another hotel.
