It is difficult to find negative points for the hotel. Well, it is pricey and rooms are not entirely soundproof, but that is all about it. And probably not the most suitable place for people planning tospend their holiday by pool. The outside pool is smallish (naturally),but with stunning views and excellent bar. Aand the rest of the hotel was just what we needed. Perfect location – snack in the middle of the old town. Very comfortable rooms, good beds, excellently equiped and very convenient bathroom. Lovely service: always ready with help and advice. Special word about their food: amazing breakfast buffet with overwhelming selection of fruits and even more great dinners, perfectly prepared. We really enjoyed our stay.

We had a lovely stay. The staff is very kind, and gave us very good recommendations for public transports or great walks. The food is great and the pools and spa are nice. The rooftop bar and pool are perfect after a day of walks. The hotel is situated in the centre of Funchal which makes it easy to find great local restaurants nearby. I would recommend this hotel definitely!

Castanheiro Boutique Hotel, as the name suggests, is not a large tourist hotel, which has many advantages. Located in the very center of Funchal, it makes daily trips and evening walks nice, easy and pleasant. It is located in a side street which is a plus is silence. The hotel itself is a combination of several buildings, an impressive old colonial-style building with a reception desk and new buildings with rooms, restaurant, spa, bars and a brilliant swimming pool on the roof of the building with a view of the city and its surroundings is also brilliant. The room itself is large, spacious, clean, the bathroom with a walk-in shower and a rain shower is unexpectedly large and spacious. There is also a minibar and a safe in the room. There is no shortage of towels, beach towels, bathrobes and hotel slippers as well as amenites in the form of cosmetics. Facilities as in a 5 * hotel. The rooms are clean and cleaned every day. Service and hotel service at the highest level, extremely professional, very nice employees make every effort to make the stay of each guest unforgettable. You can easily talk to each of them in English. Food, especially breakfast buffet continental varied and very good quality. There is something for everyone. If someone in such a hotel complains about monotonous breakfasts, it means that he chose and ate the same every day. Dinners in the HB option are also very good in the form of a'la carte, a separate menu to choose from - one appetizer out of two, one main course out of five (also a vege option) and one dessert out of two. It would seem that not much, however, is enough to satisfy the evening hunger. It is worth taking a look at the main menu that could easily exist in a 5 * hotel, as well as the wine list, because their selection is huge. All in all, a hotel that is 4+ should successfully be 5 *. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants peace, good food with a bit of luxury.

Just returned from a 2 week stay in Castanheiro Boutique Hotel. This was our second visit to Funchal & our first to Castanheiro Boutique Hotel. Location - last time we stayed quite far out in the hotel district so we picked Castanheiro for its central location. Great location, It’s situated approximately 5 minutes stroll from the Ritz & Blandy’s wine lodge - 7/8 minutes from the front & about 15 minute stroll from the old town bars & restaurants. It’s also close to a number of museums & attractions such as the photographic museum, sacred art museum Pereira D'Oliveira & blandys where you can do wine tastings. We found we could walk everywhere & if I wanted to get a taxi back from the old town it was €7/8 Rooms - we had a Deluxe Twin room with Balcony on the third floor in the building above the restaurant. Great size room with plenty of storage although there was a bit of dead space which could have been utilised differently. For example there is a large lobby area by the door with a full length mirror which easily could have accommodated a couple of chairs. The decor was tasteful & restrained. Bed was 2 twins together but with separate bedding. 2 pillows per bed plus a cushion but we asked for & received 2 further pillows. Once I had worked out the air con it was excellent. Tea & coffee provided daily & there is a paid mini bar. Bathroom was large very nicely decorated & had an excellent walk in rain shower with a further hand held show attachment. As someone with rheumatoid arthritis I appreciated the hand rail in the shower & the fact the floor was non slip. Plenty of towels & dressing gowns provided. Our balcony overlooked the restaurant area which was nice. You are overlooked by other balconies but this really wasn’t an issue & we often sat out there. Not all rooms have a balcony so I definitely recommend picking one that does. Staff - the staff are great, very polite & helpful I can not fault them. I would particularly mention the housekeeping team who kept our room spotless, Carlos who mainly worked in the Iris bar who is just the nicest friendly man & Monica & the team at breakfast. Food - great buffet breakfast range - cooked breakfasts, fruit pastries, cheese, cereal, yoghurts etc including the option to have food cooked to order. Breakfast slots need to be booked but times can be changed to suit your circumstances. Team at breakfast are well organised & really helpful. Good range of lunches available at the pool bar. We were B&B but did book dinner at Tipografia twice. Tipografia is high end with gourmet level food - the prices reflect this & I think we paid between €80 & €105 on each occasion- definitely nice for a treat. Pool - the pool area is as impressive as the photos with amazing views across Funchal. There was always enough sun loungers although umbrellas (more of this later) were more limited. The pool is a lap pool which isn’t particularly deep but we loved it & swam regularly. Pool bar is to the back with shaded area for drinks & food. Beach towels are provided. Bars - the hotel has 2 bars the iris open from 6pm & the preta pool bar open until 6pm. Great range of drinks, the team do some fantastic cocktails I recommend the pina colada COVID - the hotel felt very safe all staff wear masks & guests must do so when moving around removing once sat down. Gel was everywhere & the was a restriction of 2 people per elevator. Constructive comments - we really liked the hotel but I if I was to flag a couple of minor points they would be as follows: Pool umbrellas - there were less umbrellas than sets of loungers which meant some folk had to go without occasionally. As the pool is on the roof it’s pretty hot & exposed to sunshine it would have been better if more umbrellas were available. The situation was complicated further by the fact there were 3 types of umbrellas which require different connections to the bases. Folk invariably got this wrong & as a result umbrellas could & did blow out of their stands. Saw this happen several times including two flying off the higher roof & one which went over the wall on to a balcony below. Luckily no one was hurt but this situation could be mitigated in part of umbrellas were matched to stands & there was enough. The staff to be fair would help people locate the right ones & were quick to take them down if it was too windy. Bar opening hours - minor thing but when it’s hot sometimes it would be nice to have a drink downstairs as opposed to on the roof so it would have been nice if the Iris bar was open slightly early in the afternoon. Summary did I like this hotel? I did. Would I stay here again? I would. Do I recommend it? Yes I do

Dear Mrs- Kate, Thank you ever so much for having chosen our Castanheiro Boutique Hotel and taking the time to post on your wonderful review of your recent visit to us. I am delighted to see that you had such a wonderful stay and that the team ensured that you were well looked after throughout your stay. We want all of our guests to have a positive experience and to wish to return. To read that you enjoyed all our facilities and our location is really fantastic. Regarding the bar opening hours, at the moment our Iris Bar opens at 6 pm, but if someone wish to have a drink before, it is possible, We even have this information at the bar. We have someone on call :) Regarding the umbrellas, we have already ordered more from our supplier who is located on the mainland (to have the same type) but unfortunately they don't have enough to send to us, so we have to wait. In the meanwhile we use other type. The situation you mentioned it may happen when is too windy, but we're always very careful so that it doesn't happen anymore. We hope to have the pleasute to welcome you back in a near future. Kind regards, Sandra Abreu (sales manager)

We are still here as I write the review. Centrally located with great access to town centre promenade and most tourist attractions in Funchal. Large cosy rooms with air conditioning with great en suite. Staff can not be more helpful with any query. Restaurant and bars are a very enjoyable dining experience for both breakfast and evening meals. Tapas evening was great and well worth attending. The Angus steak was just as good if not better than what I've enjoyed back home. Great hotel with superb staff
