Visited this 5 star hotel with my wife . Requested in advance a room with separate shower and agreed to pay supplement to get one . All originally went well , seemingly good room with shower as requested, food good , other than this however things started to deteriorate somewhat. Room on closer inspection was dark with no sun, what we didn't realise however was that things about to get much worse. Day 2 of our 5 day stay started with hammering and drilling in basement below our room [bed]. Hammering reached a peak on day 2 with mechanical hammering finishing off the day . Was expecting management to approach us to explain what was going on...but nothing ...so on day 3 of construction work , asked for explanation from staff... but nothing ! Asked to speak to management but nothing . On day of leaving met hotel manager who said he was the owner and didn't see much wrong other than to explain the work was unscheduled and " had to be done". Well that's ok then !!!!! A 100% Fawlty Towers experience ...with Basil in charge ..p.s. its also in a horrid location ...take no notice whatsoever of the hotels publicity pictures …
What a splendid small, personal hotel. Attractive building and grounds, professional well trained staff, who are friendly and pleasant with it. The restaurant and food were of a very high standard. It is clear why so many reviewers return year after year. Just a very well run and presented establishment. Made for a very restful and enjoyable holiday.
We stayed for 11 nights at this fantastic hotel. The staff were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel welcome from the minute we arrived. We enjoyed our breakfasts which were a buffet plus cooked options, we chose to eat dinner on 4 nights when an á la cart plus menu of the day was offered and we enjoyed each of those meals too. Our room was lovely, having a sofa with TV area as well as a balcony, it wasn’t very sunny however as the rooms would have got hot in the sun that was actually a good thing. We asked for a kettle and were provided with one. Our room was not near the road and we could sit outside without noticing road noise. We enjoyed the ‘Poncha lesson’ and ‘Madeira Wine Tasting’ as well as the ‘Managers Drinks’, so there was an activity most evenings plus some daily spa offers. There is also a nice selection of cocktails to try with a daily happy hour. We thought that the hotel was kept exceptionally clean and tidy and the gardens were a nice haven. Although it’s a 15 minute walk into town there is a courtesy bus and taxis are 6-8 euros depending on distance and time of day. The thing that we liked most was the staff who really made our stay, the reception, restaurant and bar staff were all friendly and efficient. We will definitely stay again.…
The hotel is extremely nice, traditionally furnished, comfortable and with helpful and friendly staff. It is about a 15 minute walk to the centre of Funchal and there is a free shuttle bus from the hotel at set times each day, but not on Sundays and not in the evenings. A taxi from the centre is about 5/6 euros, but this can add up if you use them regularly. For us the real downside, the thing which would stop us staying there again, is that the hotel is right on a main road, and the traffic noise is very loud, particularly in the wing of the hotel closest to the road. This means that if you sit on your balcony to enjoy the sun, it is a far from peaceful experience. I would suggest asking for a room in the wing overlooking the garden if you mind traffic noise. The hotel has a pretty garden, but for much of the day it is in shadow as the neighbouring building is a tall, modern hotel. We paid an upgrade to stay in a suite, and were surprised that the bed was only 5 foot wide - not what I had expected. However, it was very comfortable. Internally the hotel is lovely, and I cannot fault anything about it, but if you mind road noise, think very carefully about staying here.…
Quality, quiet, refined small hotel with friendly, helpful staff & good facilities & bedrooms. Good value for 5 star. Nice garden & pools, good restaurant & happy hour bar with live piano. Food is varied & tasty & adequate portions, but includes little potato & fresh vegetables. Restaurant staff helpful but sometimes slow serving & make order mistakes. Good underground free car park, but hotel quite difficult to find by car. Easy 15 minute hill walk to city centre. We would return.
