2021 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
The Atlantic Ocean stretches as far as the eye can see at the foot of The Cliff Bay which is perched on the top of a natural promontory. The hotel is surrounded by gardens with innumerable secluded corners and centenary palm trees extending to the very edge of the cliff face. The panorama is completed by a magnificent view over the bay of Funchal to the left of the hotel. The most influential restaurant guide in the world, the Michelin Guide, has awarded a star to Il Gallo d'Oro, The Cliff Bay's gourmet restaurant run by Chef Benoît Sinthon. This is Madeira's first and only star

We have just returned from a lovely 10 night stay at Cliff Bay which we booked last minute (just the week before). As most have said this is a lovely hotel with great staff and you are able to have a very relaxing time. The first few days we had breakfast in Il Gallo d'Oro which was really nice. Great service and food and relaxing. We then had breakfast in The Rose Garden which was also very nice but buffet only. As I say very nice but just like a million others, no better or worse. It was exactly what you would expect fruit and yogurt, bread and pastries, cold meat and cheese, selection of hot food and egg station etc. The rest of our stay we went back to Il Gallo d'Oro. We did eat in Il Gallo d'Oro one evening and had a fantastic meal but you would expect that with 2 Michelin Stars. I would make one point here, if you want to have an evening meal in this restaurant I suggest you make the booking before your visit which is what we did. We heard a number of people that tried to book when they were there but couldn't because it was fully booked. This is not a restaurant for children! One minor niggle that annoyed a bit. They don't run a shuttle into town and used covid as an excuse. I would suggest its lack of staff and saving money rather than covid. They are happy to throw groups of people into mini busses for paid tours! While on the subject of getting into town. I would recommend downloading the Bolt app for taxis as we found them very good and around half the price of the yellow taxis that sit outside. I typical run into town will cost you around 4-5 euros. As others have said the hotel was fully booked but didn't feel busy at all with plenty of space and beds outside. Nothing to do with the hotel but worth noting. We were told face coverings were mandatory inside and outside. When you are walking around the shops and local area I would say 90% don't wear a face covering but when inside 100% do. That isn't a moan or anything, just a note. Overall a great time and I would certainly go again

Hotel's Favourite
This hotel is wonderful in every respect. The location and buildings are superb and I loved the easy access to the sea. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel special by the lovely friendly staff and every meal or drink was served with a genuine smile. The walk into Funchal from here is interesting and Funchal itself is a buzzy compact town with lots of historic buildings and beautiful gardens. The Christmas lights were really impressive. This was my first visit to Madeira and I loved it and will definitely return, hopefully staying at the Cliff Bay, which I could not fault in any way.

The Cliff Bay was faultless. Even though it was fully booked during our stay, there was no sense of it being crowded or busy, and there was no pressure on the availability of sun loungers or other facilities. The breakfasts were very good, and tables outside on the terrace were readily available. I loved the location of this hotel. It was close enough to walk to some excellent restaurants and very nice bars and a short bus or taxi ride into Funchal (bus stop right outside). I can only add to everything other reviewers have already said about the professionalism and friendliness of the staff, and the care taken with the cleanliness of rooms and public areas. One thing we enjoyed was that a different film was shown every day at 4pm, and we had the little cinema room to ourselves every time we went along. There was some very good music in the bar which was unobtrusive, but just enough to create an enjoyable atmosphere. I think that this hotel is very good for couples who want to forget about everyday stresses for a little while. We felt so rejuvenated after our trip we have booked a return trip for early March. Can’t wait to go back!

Having booked this hotel just to get away after 18 months of not going anywhere we we’re absolutely delighted when we arrived at this beautiful hotel. I had contacted the hotel on several occasions prior to our visit which was always met with a prompt helpful reply. We booked half board as my husband doesn’t want to travel too far with his health. Our very favourite restaurant was the Avista where you could have lunch or dinner. The menu stayed the same, but the staff were very accommodating when we needed to change a dish to suit. The staff in the hotel from front doorman, reception, through to restaurant and chambermaids were all very pleasant and helpful. Special thanks to Alfredo in the Rose Garden who always brought a smile and to Nelson in the Cliff Bar. The hotel is quite extensive and plenty of sunbathing areas on different levels, right down to the sea. Please bear in mind as Madeira is a very hilly island, that means lots of different levels in the hotel. The main drive to the hotel is on a slope, which when going out needs to be climbed (okay if you are fit and able) otherwise you can take the slope in the hotel to the 3rd floor towards the Avista restaurants and LesSuites go up the lift/elevator and exit out onto the main road. There us entertainment on in the early evening outside the Cliff Bar each evening so you can enjoy Happy Hour 5.30 to 6.30pm Also in Rose Garden restaurant, plus later in the evening on stage in the inside of the Cliff Bar. Whilst we were there the free courtesy bus wasn’t operating due to Covid but there are always plenty of taxis available outside the hotel if you don’t want to walk down into Funchal and marina area. Of course there is are buses that run very regularly which all go into Centro of town. Walking down via the Marina takes about 20 mins.Coming back allow 30 mins (remember it’s uphill). There are quite a few restaurants around the hotel, plus the Hole in Pub across the road with live entertainment from 9.00,pm. There us a Tourist Information centre about 5 mins walk to the left of the hotel on the main road where you can get a free map plus all the info you need.

Beautiful hotel, very clean . We have previously stayed in this hotel and it is even better than before. Nothing is too much trouble for all the staff. Food was superb and every taste was catered for. I have an allergy to bell peppers and they made me the same dishes as my husband and friends but without peppers. This hotel definitely deserves its 5* rating.
