Half way through our stay we were generously offered an upgrade to one of Porto Bay's new concept suites next to the main hotel. Built in 2019, these suites are a more modern and spacious premium offering by the hotel brand. For 3 days we stayed in room 45. The suite has a kitchenette, massive bathroom with double sinks, open rainwater button shower, and separate living and bedroom air con controls. The living area has a flat screen TV, desk, and lounge chairs. The bedroom had 2 very comfortable king singles you can join to make one big bed, and another flat screen TV. There are 4 wardrobes and a large modern safe. There's also an outdoor area with tables and chairs, and a little bit of a lawn with deckchairs and umbrella. Wifi was a little spotty in parts, or drops out and sometimes required us to manually switch our devices wifi off and on again so it reconnected. Not sure, but I think this could be more seamless. The adjoining Avista restaurant provides the breakfast. The buffet options were limited (perhaps due to Covid?) but there was an al la carte menu with a few of the usual options and the food was fantastic and service very professional. Staff were friendly and helpful. I was impressed that you could tell that they were very good at adapting to their customers needs very quickly. The views from the restaurant were amazing. Reception and porter staff were also excellent with helping and being happy friendly with our move and for our activity bookings. Level 6 had the infinity pool which was the best. Nicely heated and the chemicals unnoticeable. With only a small number of suites the pool wasn't busy and plenty of deck chairs available. Again there were pool staff to help with umbrellas and fantastic service for drinks and food. Really good at making you feel relaxed and welcome. Cecilia made the best cocktails by the pool. Additionally facilities include a well equipped gym (a treadmill, cross trainer, rowing machine, and free weights) with an extra open air area to work out, children's fun centre, business centre, cards/games room, and even a cinema room!! On our last night, we were offered to move to room 2 (The Artistic suite), so we could have a 2 hour later check-out (and they could accommodate an early check-in for another customer), so my only additional comments to above are about this room. It's a "studio" apartment style room with better balcony views of the bay, a more hip/funky look and décor, and a better position on the property as closer to all the facilities. However the negative is more street road traffic noise (especially trucks and motor bikes), which unfortunately caused us some trouble with sleeping. The shower also leaked badly, which I reported to reception when we checked out, so hopefully this can be fixed. If you can afford the suites I'd recommend them but then you might not leave the hotel! We were thrilled and felt very lucky for our luxurious upgrade. Thank you Porto Bay!

Hotel's Favourite
We took the plunge on Wednesday 28th October and decided to book a flight on Friday at the last minute - flight wasn't busy, forecast ok, and importantly we felt healthy enough to risk the covid test at Funchal airport. The testing at Funchal was very well organised, and after arriving mid afternoon we self isolated in our room at Les Suites enjoying room service for dinner. Our negative result was emailed through at 05.00 the next morning. We have stayed at the Cliff Bay many times so knew what to expect, friendly attentive service, good food and very comfortable surroundings. Apart from minor grumbles with a poor Wi-Fi connection, everything lived up to expectation. We stayed in a Suite for one week and enjoyed every minute. All credit to Porto Bay and their architect for creating this boutique addition out of what previously seemed to be two tumbledown houses and an impossibly small bit of land. In my humble opinion it is a visionary development, and they have created a piece of magic out of what seemed nothing, and now fits in as if it has always been there. The infinity pool works very well with beautiful views over the bay, The Avista restaurant was excellent, and all in all they have worked hard to create a safe feeling environment in these covid times. A huge thanks to the whole team, we will look forward to our next visit in hopefully less restrictive times. Stay safe!

We stayed for a few days at this beautiful Hotel. We booked the Executive Suite at the Cliff Bay and the Hotel done a very kind free upgrade to the Suite at the Les Suites Cliff Bay as a lovely surprise for our Wedding Anniversary that was being celebrated late due to unforeseen circumstances. - The Hotel is really beautiful with an elegant and detailed decor. - Beautiful and very well kept gardens. - Our Suite was huge with an elegant and cozy decor. We found the bed and pillows very comfortable. The huge marble bathroom was so beautiful with lovely amenities. Our Suite’s had a front garden with sun lounges and the most beautiful view of the Funchal Bay and Atlantic Ocean. - The Hotel has excellent facilities that are also very well kept. - We've had all our meals at the Avista Restaurant and the food is just out of this world! The food was always very delicious and tasty. The food was also always served in a very elegant and beautiful way. - The Infinity Pool (and the Avista Restaurant) has the most breathtaking view ever of the Funchal Bay and Atlantic Ocean! - The Infinity Pool Bar as a very good selection of international and local drinks. We loved the drinks! - We tried the sea access at the Cliff Bay and it was amazing! Madeira Island is known for its warm sea water with several shades of blue. - We also tried the Blue Lagoon Restaurant at the Cliff Bay but is not so good as the Avista Restaurant (access only to the Les Suites guests). We also found the Cliff Bay Hotel/Blue Lagoon Restaurant too crowded which obviously adds noise and long waiting times, whilst Avista Restaurant is only for Les Suites guests, much less guests which makes the ambience calmer and more efficient (also more personalised). But we completely understand that the Blue Lagoon is more directed to the general guests (more budget-friendly) therefore has a higher volume of clientele. - All the Staff is very welcoming, friendly and professional. They really go above and beyond at all times! - Top Tip: Both Cliff Bay Hotel & Les Suites Cliff Bay provide excellent service. However, if you want a truly 5 stars dedicated and personalised service go for the Les Suites. Guests at Les Suites can use the facilities of Les Suites and the Cliff Bay whilst the guests at Cliff Bay can only use the facilities of the Cliff Bay. We loved every single second of it! We will definitely come back! Thank you to all the Staff for the most amazing and memorable stay. Mrs and Mr Serrão

Staying at this property now and agree as with other reviewers the hardware is of the very highest specification and space in great abundance which is to be expected given the age of the hotel. Its really a home away from home. Well done! As for the negatives, it is more to do with the software part of the establishment. In properties which specialize in the intimate setting of suites, customer service , food quality and breadth comes as the most important point of contact. The breakfast at Avista in the morning certainly does not live up to the expectation of the property which is a pity. The selection is quite limited and I have never seen different varieties of cheese laid one on top of another in a plate and the same applies for their meats. All the aromas unique to the meat or cheese would have mingled with the other. They also serve a mainly egg based a la carte cooked breakfast which I ordered on my first day. It took ages and arrived cold on my table. The selection of food in the buffet was also limited. No one came to ask for refills...there is a certain impersonal air about this...... I was tempted on arrival to try the Avista restaurant but the breakfast experience has certainly put me off. Higher expectations are concomitant with what we pay..... Some positives though from the infinity pool...a lady pool staff was most professional setting up the umbrella and towels for you. This does not always occur with other pool staff which on many cases are content to just look on and have a chat with other staff until you ask them.... I am writing this in comparison with 2 previous stays of the same room category (suite) in the Savoy Palace and Reids which also incidentally fall in same approximate price category (Reids was a tad higher).

Dear Mr.Leeautan Thank you for your feedback and that you have taken the time to describe your impressions. Due to covid situation we had to readapt our buffet service to a new reallity. We have reduced the number of items exposed and a bit more options on request with table service and "grab and go" solutions... In any case we are always attentive and give good attention to the feedback of our guests so we can do better . It will be a pleasure to have you around on a future trip to Madeira. Please send us your needs and wishes for breakfast or any other "momento" of your day, so we can meet your expectaions in this particular critical period of our lives. Warm regards Les Suites Team

The suites are stunning. Roomy and beautiful with great views of the sea and at night of the twinkling lights of Funchal. The beds are huge and comfortable - the bathrooms roomy and luxurious. The plentiful and daily replenished soft drinks in the fridge were most welcome. The balconies were large enough for picnic lunches. The infinity pool is perfect, glamorous and never too busy. Location wise it is well placed as you can walk into town in 20 minutes one way and into the more tourist strip with restaurants and bars within 10 minutes the other way. Breakfast is in a lovely setting over looking the sea and has both a delicious buffet and freshly cooked choices. However special this property is - and it really is- it is the staff who make this truly five star by providing a fantastic service. They advised us and helped us book activities and restaurants that were good value and excellent. We would come again in a heartbeat.
