Hotel is in a lovely position in the Lido area. Beautiful grounds impeccably maintained, sun beds are easy to find although like any hotel suffers the usual dawn towel raid. Rooms are comfortable and spotless and the staff are all a credit to the hotel. Breakfast is delicious and caters for everyone. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

We had a side sea view room which faced back towards Funchal & we were very happy with this choice. We had the morning sun on the balcony, we were sheltered from the wind off the sea & it was very quiet & peaceful. The hot afternoon sun would have been too much for us on the balcony. The gardens are absolutely superb. The outdoor pools were lovely, not too deep & quiet enough to swim for exercise. There were ample sunbeds & parasols, the assistants were always on hand to make sure we had a parasol when we wanted one. Pool towels come from the room, we took them back there & they were replaced next day. Our room had a kitchen area with kettle, cups, pans, hob & microwave but I don’t know about other rooms. We took a travel kettle but I believe you can get one from reception. Covid tests midweek were still necessary & we asked Alexandra on reception to book us in at a local pharmacist. She was happy to help & was very efficient, thank you to Alexandra. There were offers on in the spa which we wanted to take advantage of but during a week of our stay we only saw one staff member in the spa once, on the first day. I left my request with name & phone number with reception & they passed it on to reception but we were not contacted. At the end of the holiday I was told it was the room number not my telephone number that I should have left, so probably my fault. Breakfast was great, Continental or English, plenty of everything & it was nice to sit outside each morning. We enjoyed the evening meal too, it was the usual hotel food, good & hot, no complaints. Buses into Funchal are regular, number 02. Taxis cost about 7 euros to Funchal & are outside the hotel. My only gripe was that after breakfast we couldn’t get into our room as the battery went in the lock. We told reception about this & about the safe not working, (had to have a whole new unit), the lights in the kitchen & wardrobe had stopped working & the tv didn’t work, all the leads had been pulled out & the batteries had gone in the remote control. We waited by the pool, in the hot sun & returned to our room at intervals. At about 12.30 we asked at reception & she called the repair man directly, he arrived about 20 minutes later to let us in. We just found it ridiculous that they didn’t let us in with a master key to get our swimwear, that we had to wait a whole morning to access our room. I would definitely recommend the hotel & will return again, all in all it was great.

Short break : 12th - 17th September We have stayed at this hotel many times over the past 9 years and we love it; the hotel is wonderful and we always find the staff provide excellent service and are really friendly and helpful. The pool and gardens are fantastic, the location is great as there is direct access to the promenade from the gardens and also many great restaurants within walking distance. Do not miss dining at Goya or Cris's. The walk into Funchal takes about 30-40 minutes at a moderate pace but does have a few steep parts, (up and down) to negotiate. We usually take a taxi back; although this is an added expense on top of the holiday, we prefer to stay a little way out of the centre of Funchal. This trip, we also walked to Quinta Magnolia and thought the gardens were beautiful. There was a very nice restaurant too, with a lovely outdoor seating area, a lovely place to sit and relax. We had drinks but we will go back to try the food another time. We have stayed in other Pestana hotels on Madeira but this is definitely our favourite. My only small criticism is that as there are only 2 lifts, when the hotel is busy, you may have a frustrating wait

We usually stay at the Miramar but this was a great substitution. It felt very safe, the staff were excellent and the position on the beautiful promenade was ideal for long strolls with amazing views.

Oct 8th – 22nd 2020 - Pestana Promenade . This was our first visit to Madeira and despite the Coronavirus Pandemic we had a wonderful time. My wife and I were on a package tour, bed and breakfast, and the hotel is situated about 25 minute drive from the airport on the outskirts of the capital Funchal. The Hotels main entrance and reception area is on the 5th floor with a very spacious lobby and I think that the hotel is 7 or 8 storey’s high. The main hotel amenities, pools, bars and restaurants are on the ground floor. We had a lovely spacious bedroom on the 1st floor overlooking the outdoor pools and the very well maintained pretty garden area. Our room had a good size bathroom, with a bath/shower, a large bedroom area and sliding doors to a reasonable size balcony. The balcony area had a table and 2 chairs. Our bedroom had 2 single beds made up but pushed together, reasonable wardrobe space, a fridge, good size safe, tv, a casual table and a couple of sofa loungers. It was a very clean comfortable room my only minor criticism was the lack of drawer space, only 3 drawers in the main wardrobe. Such a spacious room could easily have accommodated more storage space. The cleaning staff attended the room every day, changing towels when necessary and keeping everything clean. They worked very hard. I noticed on a previous review that that there were no kettles, cups or tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms. Using the advice of the previous reviewer I emailed the hotel via their central hotel group contact and I requested a kettle and cups for our room. This was duly acknowledged and they were in our room when we arrived. Also the following day I found a complementary bottle of wine chilling in ice in our room from the hotel as I was celebrating a special birthday. All the staff at the hotel that we had dealings with were pleasant and helpful. Regarding protection against the virus, it was very hygienic, there were sanitiser stations all around the hotel and the cleaning staff were continually wiping services down, it always felt fresh and clean. All the staff wore masks and whilst in the hotel guests were also obliged to wear masks, except obviously not in your bedroom, or when sitting down eating or drinking. Also not needed around the pool area whilst swimming or sunbathing, but if moving to and from the pool area most people wore their masks. Guest wise the hotel did not seem that busy, (numbers down because of the virus). The pool area is lovely; there were plenty of sunbeds around and usually a pool side attendant to help put up any umbrellas. Lovely swimming pools with a separate small shallow pool for children and 2 larger pools for everyone in very clean and beautiful gardens. Because of the virus precautions some of the facilities were not operating such as the spa etc but the indoor pool did remain open, although there was a restriction of a maximum of only 9 people allowed. The lovely indoor pool is on the same garden level and quite close to the outdoor pools and during quiet periods I used it several times as it was several degrees warmer that the outdoor pools. The indoor pool area is nice and there was never more than 2 people using the pool when I was there. We only had breakfasts in the hotel as we like to try other eateries. Guests need to wear a mask to breakfast, select a table and a waiter/waitress will bring over your cutlery etc in an individual bag. The breakfast is a buffet affair, no tea or coffee served at the table; there are drink dispensers in the buffet area. There are no serving implements around the buffet, before you enter the area you need to select a pair of tongs for your sole use, there is a one way system and you collect your plates, food and drink as required. You use your own tongs for selecting your food and on exit from the buffet you dispose of the tongs in a container. It appears very hygienic. The food at breakfast was okay, being buffet style and with the virus precautions, eggs etc are not cooked to order, but at least the system is hygienic. To summarise, an excellent hotel with good accommodation and facilities, also excellent staff and the hotel situated in a good location. Other information:- 1. Pool towels are provided in your room (light brown colour towels). When you need to change them leave them on the bathroom floor and the maid will leave you fresh towels. 2. The hotel has a back exit onto the promenade walkway. From the ground floor of the hotel use the bridge across the pools and on the left hand side there are about 10 steps leading down to the back door. There is a white button on the wall which you need to push to release the door lock. When returning use your door key card on the pad situated on the wall to unlock. 3. Madeira is fairly hilly for walking around; even the promenade walkway is hilly in places. Once we understood the hotel location in relation to local shops, supermarkets and restaurants we used the hotel lift to exit the hotel either level 5 or ground floor to save the leg work. 4. There were hand sanitiser’s at the entrance to every shop and restaurant. Masks must be worn when entering shops, restaurants etc but when general walking about the local area most people did not wear masks as it was not crowded, but in the capital Funchal it was fairly crowded and more people wore masks. 5. There is a bus stop immediately outside the hotel; buses 1 and 2 go into the main front area of Funchal. Bus 148 goes a torturous route but it does take you to Monte, where there are gardens to look at and is the terminus for the chairlift which travel up from Funchal centre. If you want to use the bus, everyone must wear a mask, all seats are used when busy (no gaps are left). You can purchase a ticket from the driver or you can get a transport credit card, (ours cost 13 euros for 10 journeys) and then it is just a card swipe on entry. There are different purchase options and this requires further research. 6. There are many shops selling trips around the island, we only did one trip and that was the Western one which was very enjoyable. 7. Just a brief mention regarding the Covid procedures for the island. Prior to leaving for your holiday (48 hrs before arrival) you will have needed to log into the Madeira site, details should be given by your travel provider. You will also be requested to download a Madeira app for the authorities to communicate with you. Once it is processed the Madeira site send an acknowledgement and a ref number which you will be required to show on arrival at Madeira airport. The procedures for testing new arrivals are slick with plenty of staff available to help. You basically form queues and get moved along, initially showing your Madeira site ref details, then directed to a person who will check reference numbers, fill out brief cross referencing details and give you the relevant containers, then moved on to private cubicles where the test takes place. Swabs taken from the back of your throat and both nostrils. Not very pleasant and in fact it does hurt but the sensation goes away after a while. We then went to our hotel where we stayed isolated in our bedroom until the negative result came through on the Madeira app. In our case it took 6.5 hrs for the result. 8. There are several supermarkets quite close to the hotel. The one I used most was leaving the hotel via ground floor exit, turn left, and walk along the frontage area for 5 – 10 minutes and the supermarket is up on the left, among a group of shops with a carpark in front. It is a fairly flat walk to this one. There is another supermarket in the shopping road above the hotel; it is probably closer but a bit steeper for walking. 9. Restaurants in area. There are lots of restaurants around the hotel area, it is probably easier to research them on line, but the following are what we found good and bad. (i) Leeno’s restaurant which is just along the prom from the hotel. We went there 4 times, good menu, excellent service. I had the fillet steak a couple of times and it was perfect. Even with the lack of tourists, this place gets busy and they recommend that you book 48 hrs beforehand. We saw people turned away because they were completely full (ii) Cris’s restaurants. Cris apparently has 3 restaurants locally, one is closed at present but we did try the other 2. I think they are called Cris’s Place and Cris’s Restaurant. They are quality upmarket restaurants, excellent menus and attentive waiting staff. Cris’s Place is just 2 mins from the hotel along the prom, whilst Cris’s restaurant s about a 10 min walk up via the shopping area. After studying the menu on both occasions we opted for the ‘concept’ option (40 euro pp) which includes any starter, any main course and any desert from the menu, plus as much wine as you wish or soft drinks if you prefer. The waiters are continually circulating the room topping up customers wine glasses. Excellent well-presented food. (iii) Indian Palace. This Indian restaurant is 3-4 minutes’ walk from the hotel on the road above (where the shops are). We went there twice. It was lovely food, very good portions and good service. It is also very popular and if you want to eat at peak times you will need to book a table. (iv) Papa Manuel. This is a pizza and pasta type of place, just a couple of minutes along the prom from the hotel. We also went here twice and both times we had pizza’s which were very enjoyable. Good food at a reasonable price. Outside tables give good view looking out to sea. (v) Now for the worst restaurant. Restauante Chanceller is just 3-4 minutes from the hotel on the road above with the shops. Although it looked nice from the outside, the food was poor quality, the service not very good, hygiene regarding the virus not very good using dirty book menus, seating close proximity etc. The sangria was very watered down and expensive. The bill was also very expensive compared to other restaurants. It is not surprising that on the reviews it has 88 ‘terrible’s’. Avoid.
