The Pousada de Sao Filipe is closed and no warnings whatsoever about it. This situation is so embarrassing because in any site including the Setubal Council wil infomed the building closure. After make some enquiries a Council official worker told me they closed the building because they found out a huge estrutural failure. Since then the Pousada is closed and... More

The Pousada de Setubal began its existence as a castle built by Spanish King Phillip !! in the mid-16th century. It has a stunning location on a hill on a promontory overlooking the estuary and across to the Troia peninsula. It has a chapel filled to the brim with gorgeous and rare 17th and 18th c. azulejo tiles. The furnishings... More

Up a winding and increasingly steep hill (try cycling up the polished cobbles), it has commanding views over the hinterland and coast. Spectacular but windy setting. Palatial building around a drafty courtyard. Take warm clothes. Cuisine not particularly special. Wifi extremely fickle almost everywhere but what do you expect in a castle!

We stayed for two night in a room classified as superior. Ok, it was a large room but there was nothing eles that can be condidered superior in this room. The toilette was completly olf fashioned but not in the good way. The bate tube was very and the taps very difficult to control the Walter temperature. But the worst... More

"Views are Spectacular" as other reviewers have said. We stayed here on the last night of our 3 week vacation. It was great. We enjoyed drinks on the out door patio overlooking the valley and sea. We were given corner rooms, so had spectacular views in 2 directions. The rooms are large, the hallways are large. This place gives a... More

stayed one night here, place is in an amazing old building with views to die for. They could make so much more of it than they do, the place has no atmosphere. This was our second Pousada so we had expectations of a high level of service (which we got). Mario, did everything at the hotel (waiter, bar, breakfast) and was a fountain of knowledge for our time in Setubal. We spent 2 days in Setubal which was perfect. Park Natural da Arrabida is worth the drive. PRAIA DA FIGUEIRINHA is the... More

The photo of the Pousada made a wonderful impression but the reality was different. From the town there was a long an uninteresting drive to the lower entrance of this historic fort pousada. The exterior of this entrance/car park was unkempt & a lot could be done to improve the appearance. There was a long cobbled walkway and steps which... More

As long as you can lug your cases uphill over cobbles for 200 metres, this is a fabulous place. Our room overlooked the bay and, whilst relatively small, very comfortable. The restaurant has a small menu but all the food seemed very good. Charming staff and friendly atmosphere overall.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Pousada de Setubal is situated in the nearby historical city of Setubal, offering stunning views of the River Sado, the Troia peninsula and all of the surrounding Natural Park of Arrabida. In this old fort of seventeenth century architecture, named Sao Filipe, you can feel the traces of the past, having more than four centuries of history. Just a breath of imagination could give live to the thick walls and gravestones of this historical Pousada, rising out of the cold slabs, a lively picture of live in the court during the reign of the Spanish monarch Filipe II. For those who enjoy golf, you will find near the Pousada de Setubal, Sao Filipe, the magnificent golf courses of Troia and Montado. Within the Setubal region you can also go on cruises on the River Sado to do some dolphin watching, visit the beaches in Arrabida and eat traditional fried cuttlefish. ... more   less
