About

#75 of 309 hotels in Lisbon
Travellers' Choice
It’s not just another hotel in Lisbon. It is the NAU Palácio do Governador (Governor’s Palace, in English), with 60 different rooms, near the Tagus river in the historic centre of Belém, one of the most beautiful and emblematic areas of the Portuguese capital. Built on the site of the former house of the governor of the Tower of Belém, exquisitely restored, on top of roman ruins probably from the 1st to the 5th century, the NAU Palácio do Governador is a palatial building with a reception that once was a chapel, a restaurant with original domes as ceilings and contemporary SPA that’s linked to the ancient thermal traditions of Mediterranean cultures. Close to the Tagus and national historic monuments, Palácio do Governador is the natural choice for anyone who wants to be in Lisbon, near everything, from culture to leisure and far enough from the frenzy of the city centre.

A short taxi ride from downtown Lisbon and neighbouring Belem tower and Jeronimo monastery , one can find the elegant Palacio do Governador , member of the Great Hotels of the World . Restored to it’s former glory with an eye for detail and exquisite taste ( signed interior designer Nini ), this 5 star property features well equiped but small guestrooms , beautiful pools with sunbeds , spa facilities and professional service . Pool areas are never crowded and a heaven off peace ( when trains do not pass by ). Quality of bedding is excellent as well as the rainshower waterpressure , so rejuvenating . Breakfast is enjoyed al fresco and supervised by Mr Paul Silva who is an amazing host .He lifted our stay to the next level. Only negative , the orange juice is not freshly squeezed but canned , unfortunate for a 5 star property in a country where oranges are abundand . Definetely our hotel of choice when returning to beautiful Lisbon !

There are a great amount of positives about this hotel and I will certainly start with these: the building is stunning and the renovations made are of ha very high standard which are even noticeable in the corridors (areas often forgotten); the staff are attentive, pleasant and fluent in a myriad of languages; the outside swimming pool is a haven of peace and it never got that busy; the indoor pool is lovely and there was a wide array of spa a treatment should you wish to take them; the breakfast on offer and which was included in the price (not usually a Portuguese strong point) was very acceptable and the service was very efficient; our room was nicely decorated, spacious and the cleaning team certainly ensured high standard of cleanliness throughout our 4 night stay. However, several tiny little things did 'bug' us and made the experience that tiny little bit less pleasant. We felt it petty that only one bottle of water was provided per stay (it is customary for a new bottle of water to be provided in rooms in many a hotel chain, including those of a lower star rating); 3 Nespresso pods provided for the whole of the stay (again, many chains replace these as and when people use them); a 5 Euro charge to purchase a shower cap to use in the inside pool felt utterly unnecessary (surely the hotel is more than capable of providing these to its customers free of charge); the toiletries, which were of superb quality were never replenished throughout the entire stay - these 'cost-cutting' measures seem wholly petty from the part of NAU - this is not a budget hotel, nor we had looked for a budget one, so we'd expect certainly luxuries to be readily available and included in the room price. The biggest bug bear: a double bed should not be formed by joining 2 twin mattresses together and putting a bed sheet over it - that is really not something one would expect to find in a luxury hotel. It is true that this is an old building, which no doubt posed immense challenges to the wiring of the rooms, though in the 21st century attention should have been given to the number of sockets available in the room (insufficient) and the lack of USB ports was a missed opportunity. Added to that a complex system of numbers to turn on the lights did require a little bit of time to get used to. The a/c unit certainly cooled the room down but it did not cool the entirety of the room, 2 units would have been preferable. A last note for those complaining about the location of the hotel: this is not a city centre hotel nor it claims to be so don't fault it on that and actually check its location! It is not difficult to do so. There is plenty public transport around and if need be Uber will put you in the city centre in less than 20 minutes. On the whole, a very good stay. Correct the little niggles and you'll have that little better a product and be in line with other international chains that offer 4 and 5 star accommodation.

We had an absolutely lovely four nights here. The bedrooms are spotless and airy with beautiful modern bathrooms. The pool area is fantastic with lots of loungers and towels available. The highlight of the stay was the service at breakfast from Paulo and his team. We have never had such a good breakfast at any hotel ever and the service was absolutely incredible. Thanks for a great stay!
