I chose Solar do Costello because of it's location in the walls of Lisbon St George's castle in the Alfama district. This heritage inn, Alfama and the castle all lived up to all of our expectations. The Inn was quiet, friendly, clean and efficient. It is proud of it's history as part of the castle kitchens. It even has it's...

Our family used the 737 bus regularly to visit many sites in Lisbon. The hotel is well designed with the lounge a place to meet over a cuppa after a busy day out. Breakfast was always fresh . All staff were professional making our stay relaxing.

Solar do Castelo is on the grounds of the famous, breathtaking and beautiful Castle of Sao Jorge. Now, that would make is special enough, but behind the unassuming and huge red doors is a magnificent hotel that rivals any in the county. From the beautiful tiles and fountain and sculptures in the courtyard to every last detail in the rooms,...

My wife and I stayed here in December 2016. This hotel definitely warrants the high reviews that it has on trip advisor. The hotel was very clean and the staff was very courteous. Breakfast was excellent. There were typical meats and cheeses, eggs, ham, pastries, tarts, fresh squeezed orange juice, and even mimosas. Our room was very unique and had...

Please go to the REAL Fado bars, not the hotels, for the best music unique to Portugal. The hotel has all the advice you need. The area around El Famma, Castillo St Jiago is best. The Maritime Museum is one of the best in the world. Doig Simmonds

The location (once you find it) is terrific as you don't have to go very far to be in the hustle and bustle of the city attractions. The hotel is very comfortable, with good sized rooms. So close to the castle means that the surrounding shops and cafes cater mostly for tourists, so for us in December, a few closed...

This Heritage Hotel was cosy, comfortable and elegant. The hotel is a restored 18th century mansion, it even has a museum that displays artifacts that were uncovered during construction. Top notch service, lovely room, excellent staff. It is literally next the Castle of St george and convenient to al the Almafa neighborhood. The room was very nicely appointed, including a...

Stayed here three nights with my daughter and would highly recommend although only for people who are prepared to walk up the hill ! Our room was very nice, comfy beds, small well-equipped bathroom with lots of hot water, molton brown toiletries etc. We had breakfast there each morning which had pretty much everything you could want, in the summer...

A wonderfully cozy and atmospheric hotel. The location within the castle area, the neighborhood, with narrow cobblestone streets, it's all very picturesque. I would have hoped that the hotel guests had access, inside the castle gates, directly from the hotel, even outside opening hours, since the building is part of the castle complex and is adjacent to it. The hotel...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
