Stayed at the Downtown Guest House in downtown Lisbon for a week. The location is the best possible, next to Rossio square and at walking distance of the Chiado district. Metro and ferry stations are nearby and tram lines are available in the surroundings of the hostel. The place is up to expectations: clean rooms, good shower and a very...

Our room was super-tiny but was clean, safe and the location really was fantastic. For 2 out of our 3 nights there, there was a group of students staying on the same floor. They were pretty noisy until about midnight and kind of gave the place more of a 'hostel' feel. But the third night was quiet. If in Lisbon...

I stayed at the hotel at the end of April. The location is a big plus, the hotel is located within walking distance to major tourist attractions. The staff was really friendly and helpful, they helped us carrying our luggage upstairs as the hotel does not have an elevator and they also provided us with a map and very useful...

Positives: very clean, cheap, very central location, felt very safe, staff is very friendly and helpful. Not so nice (or say, strange): The entrance is through a shop, from the outside it doesn't even look like a hotel, no lift. But don't let this put you off! Would definitely stay again.

The room is comfortable enough considering the cost-effectiveness: clean, good sized, new sheets and brand new bathroom, even though the bed and the pillows aren't good. The location is the best you can get, very close to everything. Nice and helpful service during the day. But we arrived during the night - after warning them in advance about it -...

This guest house is in the middle of 4 or 5 big plazas in the center of Lisboa, excellent location and despite the fact that is a budget house, the service is incredible good, friendly and welcoming almost like a first class hotel . Stairs to climb? the staff will move your luggage any time of the day or night;...

I've been host in this structure from 16 to 20 of August. Excellent position, kindness of clerks. Possibly to improve stairs/rooms since they're not so new. Anyway they seemed to be quite clean. The only thing that I didn't like was that in our balcony clean laundry and sheets of the hostal were hang out without telling us anything. Anyway...

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.

Some rooms have twin beds pushed together, vs double beds. you have a choice of looking out on the courtyard (lack of privacy) or the street (lots of noise at night). pick your poison, but know what you're getting into.”
