I don't know whether to call El Chafariz a "hotel", we felt much more at home that in a hotel, although with all the advantages of an excellent hotel. It is beautiful, quirky, unique, personal... And very Portuguese. The rooms are big, all different, comfortable, air con is quiet and reliable, beds are huge and extremely comfortable, plenty of cupboard space, a simple minibar (free) and a safe, bathrooms are big. Both the dining room and the sitting room have period decoration, including the ornate ceilings, the sitting room is very comfortable and has plenty of space, we sat there in the rain with a drink and felt as if we owned the place (we wish!). The terrace covered in buganvilia is the perfect spot for a cup of tea or a drink in the afternoon. As you leave your room in the morning you can smell the fresh pastries being baked, breakfast is fresh, varied, plentiful: bread and pastries, cheese and cold cuts, fresh fruit and juice, yogurt, eggs, bacon... Everything prepared on the spot. And plenty of dark, smooth, intense Portuguese coffee. Location is perfect, just at the entrance of the very lively Alfama, easy to walk to most places, short taxi ride otherwise. And then we come to the people. They are immensely attentive, polite, helpful, friendly... They welcomed us every time we rang the bell with a huge smile and the offer of a cup of tea (there is somebody to open the door 24/7). Yes, there are some steps (not that many) to the entrance but they will run to help you with your luggage. It is small, book early, we booked more than 2 months in advance (it was peak season) and just managed to get rooms. All in all, we enjoyed our few days here enormously and would go there again without a doubt, thank you for making our stay feel special. …
