#5 of 43 hotels in Cascais
Travellers' Choice
Grande Real Villa Italia is a result of the adaptation of the old houses where King Umberto II of Italy lived while exiled in Portugal from the 1950's to the 1980's. Located in the cosmopolitan city of Cascais, Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel & Spa represents excellence in design, sophistication and comfort. With the Atlantic Ocean as the predominant scenery, you can look towards the north and see the beautiful hills and castles of Sintra, while Lisbon is only a few minutes away.

My Wife and I have stayed here for 6 Nights as I was participating in Ironman Portugal. This Hotel is located 3 Minutes walking distance from the Start Line and the centre of Caiscais. Beautiful Rooms - Beautiful Food and the Staff coukd not be more Friendly or Attentive. We Both really enjoyed our Break here and would not Hesitate to Recommend this Hotel to our Friends and Family and would definitely return. Loved every minute of it.

We have stayed at this hotel several times in the past and always would have rated it the best all round 5 star in Cascais. Not after this stay. First thing is the fabric of the hotel. The public rooms still look the part (if a little dated now with all the black and gold) but the bedrooms need renovation. The hotel opened 15 years ago and they have not been renovated since. Our bedroom furniture was chipped. The carpet was faded and stained badly and urgently needs replaced. Also the mattresses on the beds are not particularly comfortable. Secondly service. No turndown at all. Mini bar empty except for three cardboard cartons of water. These were not replaced at all during our stay and we were told we’d need to pay for more. No glasses in the room. That’s right no glasses, let alone tea and coffee making facilities. Pool service was non existent. There were towels on the the sun beds in the morning but no one replaced them at all during the day. No one came to remove the dirty towels from the loungers and there was no food or drink service. No staff came by at all during our three days by the pool. The positives, the location cannot be beaten and many of the staff are really helpful and charming. We had not travelled abroad for two years and chose the Villa Italia as it was one of our favourite hotels. But to charge customers top rates and then offer a much reduced service is just not acceptable. All of these things can be remedied if management want to return the hotel to its former glory.

Room Tip: Insist on a room in the main building if you want a proper view of the sea and not the side annex

We were in town for the Ironman Portugal race, with lots of activity in and around the hotel. Unlike some experiences I’ve had since COVID began, each staff member was kind, courteous, and welcoming. The room was pristine and the linens soft and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was sprawling, fresh, and delicious. The views from the terrace and restaurant were outstanding. You can tell the pride they have in every part of the grounds.

Since new ownership changed management, this 5 star hotel has gone downhill on all levels. Agree! The last two years were extremely stressful and difficult but cannot explain why broken umbrellas at the pool were never replaced, or dirty guestroom carpets could not have undergo a deep cleaning . Basic investments in regular maintenance are a must in this place which looks shabby and run down. How could the new owners neglect this ussance? A shame The Belvedère restaurant is still not operating, the breakfast service is limited without fresh orange juice and omelette service included. The wonderful lunch buffet vanished. Many 3 star hotels deliver a better product than the Villa Italia does. We left earlier and we made our points clear to the very friendly guest experience manager. Poor guy. Hope new investers show their mercy to this grand old lady of Cascais.

This was our fifth (if not sixth) time at this hotel. However the service just seemed a bit “off” in comparison to previous years, even last year in the midst of the pandemic it was excellent. No water in the room, breakfast service was chaotic, how difficult is an order for two espressos? No poolside service whatsoever - you had to go and get them (if you could find them). No towels replaced or loungers cleaned after initial set up. Everything just seemed too much trouble, which it never was previously. There’s a lot of competition in Cascais and Estoril, we’ve stayed at the InterContinental in Estoril twice. The GRV Italia needs to get back on its game as large scale tourism returns.
