at £660 for 12 nights including rtn flights to Lisbon with Thomas Cook this was, in many respects a bargain and any criticism must always relate to the price paid. We went in August. The hotel was full. We had a refurbished wing room but not a seaview as not available. If you can, book one of these. Ours had a balcony but the view to the internal road meant it was not an attractive option. Not sure if the seaview rooms have a balcony. Rooms are ok sizewise but not enough storage space for clothes. New shower, decent pressure - bring you own toiletries as the hotel ones are small. Towels are small and not great quality. Public rooms have real character, redolent of the hotel's heyday in the 50's-70's backed up by photos of celebrities/politicians who have visited. The staff are all very friendly. The restaurant has glass windows overlooking the drama of Guincho beach, as dramatic a view as one could every want and an elegant room with polished herringbone wood floors. We only ate their the first night. There was a h/b option working out at £20 per person per night but you'd get v. bored - menu is classic beachside portuguese - rather old fashioned but better than many meals we ate outside. Plus points - price swimming pool - slight salty and refreshing and out of the wind. pool bar - basic menu but friendly staff general ambience of the hotel and proximity to beach. negative points - breakfast - appalling, no variety - coffee ok, out of season fruit or tinned, bread ok, scrambled egg and foul little bullet sausages and the cheapest luncheon meat ham under clingfilm - given how Portuguese revere the pig like nowhere else this just shameful. beach - so windy in July & Aug that if you are not a windsurfer/kite/surfer then its hard work to sit on it. Red flags are the norm so difficult to bodysurf without being dragged out but great beach bar 2/3 way along for sunsets or another bar/restaurant at the end. cleanliness of pool area - needs some maintenance work, pool itself is spotless. remoteness - the other walkable r'rants from hotel are all "special occasion" and v. expensive with v. variable quality and old fashioned. But recommend strongly Pateo do Guincho inland through the scrub and its sister r'rant Pateo in Cascais. You need a car or regular taxis to Cascais only 15 minutes away. Avoid most Cascais restaurants nr centre and beaches - touristy and v. average food. Quality increases the further you are from centre. Sintra great for a day. Park at bottom. Other beaches to recommend - Carcavelos, Galaphinos and further afield south Comporta.

The view from the rooms facing the Atlantic ocean but also from the restaurant and bar are unique. The former fortress has been built on the cliffs next to an amazing beach which is a paradise for surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers. I booked it because my son likes to surf. Right next to the hotel is the surfers' shop where can rent everything. Some of the rooms were renovated with a modern shower.

This 4 star hotel has good sea view and if it was duly maintained could be a beautiful hotel. It needs a refurbishment and cleaning. The room was very big, warm and clean with a stunning sea view. The breakfast was a completely disappointment. We have been in 2 stars Hotels with more variety and quality that his one. Some bread and supermarket cake, butter and jam, mixed eggs and sausages and some season fruit (orange, banana and apples). A dubious orange juice and red fruits juice. Reception staff was very helpful and warm.

Very Lovely spot in the majestic beauty of Portugal. Dinner was amazing! But even though personnel was very professional, the location beauty and wilderness is what will amaze you. Thanks to all the staff, they where very helpful.

This hotel is situated in a fabulous location overlooking the beach. The hotel itself is very tired and dated, although some rooms have been modernised. We had a "superior" room, which was ok, but lacked basic amenities such as a hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. The breakfast was buffet style, but the foodstuffs were not covered, although I did ask a staff member one day, and I was pretty much ignored. On one occasion we put a cover over some food, but a staff member removed it immediately. Flies were landing everywhere - not good food safety practice. We found one member of staff to be particularly helpful- Andrea on reception. She was friendly, efficient and professional - a credit to the hotel. The interior of the windows were dirty, although I do understand it would be impossible to keep the exteriors clean due to the location. In my opinion a lot of work and money needs to be spent in order to make this hotel a 4 star award building. It's a great location for surfers and that's the best praise I can give it. The bus to Cascais for 2 is €7.70, but you can get a taxi for approx €8.00 - well worth it.
