We had a great stay at Casa da Taanaca for 7 nights in July-August 2017The stone house has a really great location in the ebst region of the island , we think, near to all things and places you have to explore when on Sao Miguel.Very cosy, very tidy and clean house , equipped with everything you will need. If you miss something, just call Antonio(the owner)and he will provide this with pleasure. If you are looking for a quite , calm and secluded place - this house should be your chioice - the owner is the kindest host we ever had !!! NOt to forget to mention the great welcome package we had when arriving - bread, tea, wine, cheese, milk, everything!!!! We really fell in love with this place!!!! Thank you, Antonio!!!!

We stayed at Casa da Figueira in March for the second of our two weeks of all out hiking, exploring, and enjoying Sao Miguel for our first time. This is a beautifully restored, perfectly clean, spacious, and well equipped cottage. We had exactly zero to complain about. It is located in an absolutely quiet and easy to reach uphill location on the outskirts of the small town Lomba da Fazenda. It comes with a large and tidy front yard, offering magnificent views across the ever so green hills of the Azores, spotted with little white houses, and reaching as far as where the skies meet the Atlantic ... even now, several weeks after having been there, I can close my eyes and this view will come back to me. The owner, Antonio, is an extremely nice gentleman, who did not only welcome us with a fridge and kitchen full of local goodies, but also sat down and gave us a complete tour of potential attractions to visit. We still keep the map with all his comments and notes. If we could, we'd rather be back in this place tomorrow!

We stayed here for four days, and enjoyed it a lot. The cottage was great, everything complete and it came with a good view. Close to Nordeste (and at the end everything on the island....). Antonio was friendly, gave us a welcome package enough for a big family for a week :). Clean and quiet to be mentioned as other features.

We chose the Casa da Figueira for our first stay in the Azores and it couldnt have been better. The cottage made out of traditional local stone is very pretty and well tended. The inside comfort is pretty basic but the tranquil location and view all around more than make up for it. We very much enjoyed and got used to having our breakfast every morning on the terrasse. This will be missed! Antonio, the owner, is a wonder of kindness.

Wonderful views of rolling green hills and the Atlantic. The cottages are nicely restored with local materials and authentic features. Antonio is a most friendly host and goes out of his way to ensure a pleasant stay.

We stayed at Casas do Frade for 3 nights in May 2013. The accommodation was excellent: 6 self contained rustic cottages overlooking rolling countryside. Our cottage had room enough to comfortably sleep a family of four: two bedrooms, kitchen/living area and bathroom- there was even a walled garden area with BBQs. Our host Antonio had taken the trouble to prepare us a welcome pack (we discovered not standard practice in the Azores) and had lots of info on the best things to do during our stay on the island. We only wished we had stayed longer. 5/5

We had a lovely week in Casa da Pedra in early August 2013. It's a small but well equipped cottage that suited the pair of us very well. Nice little garden with BBQ (stocked with wood and cleaned out for you afterwards!, and stunning views over the Atlantic. It was quite remote - you really need a car - but with a good fast road into the centre of the island you could explore the whole of San Miguel very easily - we did a lot of driving! It was one of several cottages all owned by Antonio who was very kind and even set us up with some provisions - bread, milk, cheese, ham, fruit, yoghurt, jam etc - which seeing as we found it rather hard to track down an open shop was very handy! I would recommend a visit to Ponta Delgada or Vila Franca do Campo to stock up and don't rely on just happening upon village shops! The only drawback we found with the house was sleeping! Ironically, given that it's such a quiet rural location, the dogs in a house across the valley barked all night which kept us awake. Plus the Cory's Sheerwaters make a weird cry right outside the window - you get used to this, though! The bed was also not very comfortable at all. Rather small, very hard, and had a horrid plastic sheet on it that rustled every time you moved an inch. In retrospect we should have just taken it off. But otherwise this was a perfect base to explore the island and put you right amongst the locals. We even joined in a local procession with flowers decorating the streets and brass bands on our first night! I would certainly recommend this spot - and if the kittens and cat are still there, give them a stroke from me!

What a delightful find this was for us. These little self-catering cottages located in the Nordeste Region on Sao Miguel, Azores were just what we were looking for. Set in a small village in this rural end of the island, they are quiet, peaceful and very comfortable. The owner, Antonio, is very helpful and even had the refrigerator stocked with some goodies for us like cheese and ham, milk, yogurt, orange juice and bread. There is a new, fast road from Ponto Delgada that makes it very easy to get to and there are signs to point the way when the road ends. Antonio also sat with us and went over the map and made recommendations of places to go and gave us a great overview and introduction to the Island. With the new road, it makes it very easy to get to different parts of the island rather quickly. You could easily stay here and see the whole island...we did. That means you don't have to move around and can stay in one spot. The views from our "backyard" were incredible. Beautiful place, loved it more than Hawaii and hope to go back now that I realize we can get to the Azores from the states. Some pointers, there is a good size grocery store in Vila de Franco Campo or shop in Ponto Delgada at the Sol Mar Hyermarket. Better choices than the small places. We stayed in Casa de Bilha. If you don't want a lot of stairs, you might choose another one. Bedroom upstairs, living room on first, bath and kitchen on lower level...so a long trip at night to the bathroom. The Azores is great, but it is not a beach destination. The best part is that while there are lots of tourists, there are no big resorts. When you are touring the island you are right in the villages, interacting with the Azoreans.

We spent two nights here during a week-long trip around the island of San Miguel. The casas are located in Lomba Da Fazenda just a couple of miles from the town of Nordeste. The owner, Antonio Melo, was very easy to work with in advance via email. The Casas Do Frade sign was very evident from the main road as we traveled east from Nordeste, and were found the place quite easily. Antonio welcomed us, and made sure all of our questions were answered. Our little stone cottage was just perfect, with lovely gardens in a rural area. We shopped in Nordeste and cooked dinner one night at home, then visited a local restaurant another night. Casas do Frade offers both one and two bedroom cottages. Ours was decorated in a lovely nautical theme and was furnished with everything we needed. In particular, a clothes washer - a critical item when on an extended trip! There were 2 downsides for us - we are quite tall, and the bed was quite short, and second, the path down to the cabin was a bit difficult for us with luggage, etc. Younger or more agile visitors would see this as an advantage, as it is quite lovely and private. We enjoyed the wild Nordeste coast a great deal, in particular our explorations into the mountains above. A caution - do NOT drive down to the lighthouse - we did, we were sorry! Note that we did not see Antonio again after the first greeting. He was away on a business trip, and told us just to leave the key and cash in the cottage when we left. There was a on-site maid/handy person available should the need arrise however, so were not completely alone. I would not recommend this place to someone who was not pretty self-sufficient. A rental car is critical. It was a tad chilly and moist in mid-May however the cottage had a space heater and dehumidifier available.
