Value
Hotel Not Hotel is a place in the centre of Amsterdam where a room isn't just a room, but a work of art with its own creator, story, and identity. Most of them designed and specially made by Collaboration-O, a group of young designers that originated from the Eindhoven Design Academy, and one by Arno Coenen and his partner IRIS.When you wake up, you step into an art-filled, exhibition-like space instead of an anonymous lobby or hallway. The entire hotel is one big living room, with cosy seating areas between the cottages. Combined with our luxury beds and other facilities, Hotel Not Hotel offers an unrivalled experience.. Besides all this, we feel that the value of a city lies in experiencing its local day-to-day life. As we are closely connected to Amsterdam and its numerous creative entrepreneurs, we know where to send you for a night on the town, a hidden culinary gem, or an upcoming artist's exhibition. The hotel can also be the perfect background for your own event, and we take group reservations, giving you the opportunity to have the hotel all to yourself. The bar connected to Hotel Not Hotel is called Kevin Bacon. Just like the actor, the bar has zero pretention, it always delivers, and it makes sure everybody has a good time. Kevin Bacon is not your typical hotel bar. It's where locals get their morning coffee or a quick breakfast. It's where friends meet for a cocktail or a beer before diving into the nightlife, and where hotel guests let their hair down after a long day in the city.

Hotel Not Hotel is praised for its unique themed rooms and quirky atmosphere, offering guests an unconventional stay that stands out to many visitors. While the overall cleanliness, particularly of the bathrooms, is positively noted, some guests have voiced minor concerns about maintenance. Service experiences reportedly range from friendly to unresponsive, with occasional issues in staff communication. The value of the hotel is a point of contention, with a number of travelers expressing dissatisfaction over refunds and unexpected charges. Additionally, while the amenities add to the hotel's charm, complaints about noise, bugs, and inadequacies in the communal bathrooms are evident. Rooms, often described as small and underwhelming, can detract from the overall experience due to their size and ventilation issues.

Our whole experience was amazing, the staff were super helpful especially when it came to recommending places to eat and activities to do near by. The decor of the hotel is really cool and each room is unique. Our room was small but we had everything we needed, the door to our room was hidden behind a bookcase like something from a Scooby door film, I loved it. It was interesting to just walk around the hotel and have a look at the art work. The food in kevin bacon is well worth a try, it's thai food and it's very affordable. The location of the hotel is ideal. We were only a short 20 minute ride by public transport to the city centre. Or if you fancy cycling the hotel has bikes you can rent for the day. I would highly recommend to anyone planning a trip to Amsterdam that you stay a few nights in Hotel not Hotel.

We spent two nights at the Hotel not Hotel in the "Fading Colours" room. At the time of booking we were first shown 60 Euro/night in a double room (+taxes). But after we made our reservation we were shown 70 Euro/night. I find this really misleading. You could display the price directly including taxes, so you know where you stand (but not only after zu already reserved)! When we arrived, the pictures on the website were outdated and it was more like a "silver cube" of around 5 sqm, which wasn't too bad. The guy at the reception was very friendly and the hotel itself looks very exciting. My biggest criticism is the bad ventilation of the rooms. We had over 30 degrees and our room was roaring hot despite the fan (there wasn't any window to open either). Furthermore, there was no distance concept due to corona and in the toilets, for example, it was difficult to keep a distance. Unfortunately, after the first day we missed 50 euros from our travel bag, which was dismissed by the receptionist with "well, we don't care in principle, but it's unpleasant for you". We only stayed here because it was close to our friend we visited. I would recommend booking a room with its own bathroom and not to go there if it is too hot outside. Also take care of your valuables.

Having just returned from a eight night stay, i had a wonderful experience of this place. the common areas are where anything but sleeping happens. quite and comfortable. the tiny room was clean and a very comfy bed. with excellent soundproofing surprisingly, helpful staff. the comunal bathroom has three toilets three showers and a larger room with a shower and a toilet. this is shared between 16 rooms the 10 others have toilets. I never had to wait even once during my stay. It would be a improvement to offer TRAVEL size toiletries for people to buy. the vending machine at reception only sells full size toothpaste ,not a choice for someone flying later that day. overall I loved my stay, however if the hotel wanted to improve the clients experience , try to understand how people feel in a communal toilet /washing area. they always leavings things or loosing things in the area, which is why the hotel should offer travel sizes for sale. I'm looking forward to my next stay

Much smaller hotel than in the pictures. the rooms are crowded. The common sanitary facilities are in the middle of the bar restaurant so not practical at all. Despicable trade policy. reservation made for spring, trip postponed to summer due to covid. Refund refused by the hotel. Pay 398 eur for 3 nights when I should have paid 150 eur. Very unhappy with the commercial policy of this hotel. Above all, do not book directly. Go through Booking.com with the option to cancel or book at the nearby De Hallen hotel, much better service for less price

Location is good, a tram ride to the centre doesn't take long. It is an unusual place but not fir peopl expecting comfort and space. No coffee in the room either. We had bookcase XL which has a bathroom. The room is very small with nowhere to put anything. No wardrobe etc. Same in the bathroom. Hot water takes ages. 2 way mirror can just be seen through from the outside. The reason I've given 3 stars is they replaced the towels on day 2 with hand towels, the towels are pretty small and thin anyway. When we asked for larger towels, they had run out. That is unforgivable in a hotel. It was impossible to dry yourself with a hand towel.
Kevin bacon bar very expensive.

Hi There! Thanks for leaving a review. The size and facilities of the rooms are stated when booking. But if you have any tips of improving storage space please let us know and we will look into this. In terms of the towels, all I can say that our supplier got stuck in the storm which caused for a delay in towels. We always want to offer fresh towels, and the bad weather influencing delivery is totally out of our control. We apologize for that, since we understand that tiny towels are not sufficient for showering. Many thanks, Hotel Not Hotel

The staff is SO friendly, the restaurant in the hotel (Kevin Bacon Bar) serves the most amazing Thai food and cocktails and the hotel looks like no other hotel I've ever been. The first night we slept in 'The Blue House upstairs' (this was our favorite!) and the second night we slept in 'The Secret Bookcase L'. Both very nice rooms, the bookcase was a bit warm but that's because of the shower that's in the room.

There is enough room to sit and relax outside your room, the toilets and the showers are very clean and the location of the hotel is perfect: near the public transport that takes you right to the center in under 15 minutes, there is a supermarket on a 5 minute walking distance and there are a lot of nice coffee corners and terraces nearby.

It was the perfect hotel for a long weekend in Amsterdam, loved it!

This hotel is in the “hipster” area of the city and fits with its quirky vibe.
The room themes are very creative and the decor is very unique.

We stayed in the poison ivy room, but the decoration ends at the door and inside is...cosy.
The inside of our room was pretty plain, but we did have an en suit which was very much appreciated as many of the others have a shared bathroom.
The door handle was also pretty broken (picture attached)

The colleagues here are lovely and very helpful, they offered some great recommendations.

Overall, we were only using it as a place to sleep and not spend time. If it was anything more than that I think we would of have a different experience.

We had breakfast here once. The options are a little limited and there is a bit of a language barrier when ordering as our order got a bit confused. Overall, again staff were lovely.

If you’re looking for a quirky hotel in a nice party of the city, it’s a good find overall

Such a wonderful stay at hotelnothotel!
All the staff were so friendly and welcoming.
We stayed in the tram room and have to say, it's the best nights sleep I've ever had!
The onsite 'Kevin Bacon' restaurant serves the most delicious Thai food, and very reasonable prices when you consider central Amsterdam costs.
Would definitely recommend this place, it's a very cosy and chilled environment and not like any hotel I've stayed at before! Very unique and quirky. 🙂

I stayed in the Poison Ivy room and found that the size of the room was fine plus having an attached, private bathroom was very convenient. The bed was comfortable and the sheets clean.

The price is a little high for what it is and the location is quite far from the centre of Amsterdam, but it is not abnormally high compared to other options in the area. A minor downside was the bathroom sink was extremely small and made it difficult to not make a mess whenever using it. A major problem for me was that the room had NO airflow at all, meaning the air would be unbearably stuffy within a short time of closing the door to the room.

Difficult to understand for us how the average of this hotel is so high. Two positive things, it was clean and the staff was friendly but we didn't enjoy at all our stay there. We came from a 4 day bike trip and we wanted specially take rest. It was not possible. Our room (Mrs With) was on the ground floor and it was like being in the middle of a bar (it was next to a bar). I think they should be more honest when you book a room and explain what you are really going to get. If I know the room has no window (specially now with the corona crisis) and it's next to a bar for sure I wouldn't stay there. As a solution they offered us stay in other rooms (not the first day because it was fully booked). The problem with the noise improved (although still without windows) but it was annoying having to complain and change the room every day. For sure I wouldn't come back.

Hi, I can’t recall the sky scrapers. The rooms are cleverly designed yet small. However this was not an issue for us as we spend most the time in the common areas exploring. A very cool experience which will be remembered far longer than your average hotel stay. Enjoy!

Tram would be the best way but depends on how much luggage you have otherwise Uber it to the hotel. Bike rental is relative to others however lot easier to pick it up from the Hotel plus they will provide some ideas and routes to you. Enjoyed the hotel and very good restaurant with decent prices for food. The other thing you need to be aware of is the rooms upstairs can be very small

How far are the communal bathrooms from Bookcase S? Is there a fan in the room?
Amsterdam, The Netherlands1 contribution
Hi! The bookcase S is tiny room hidden away behind a.. well, entire bookcase. There is a fan in the room and a little air vent, but don't forget about the massive doors. The bookcase S is located next to the staircase. Our staircase counts about 15 broad steps and makes you end up right in front of the communal bathrooms. Hope that helps and wish to meet you soon! Cheers, Hotel Not Hotel
