Great place to camp out on a rainy Sunday and grab a coffee or a bite to eat. Nice low key relaxing atmosphere an great to hang out with some friends. .....I only had a coffee here which was nice, but lukewarm.....but this was compensated by the glittery disco ball above our table ☺️ Did not try any of the food but looks general pub food
Booked this hotel for one night when staying in Amsterdam to combine with a ferry trip. Due to COVID 19 had to rearrange the trip and communicated with the hotel for this. They were really helpful and bent their policy to change dates for us. Hotel was easy to find and local amenities with supermarket nearby...god send for us as we must have picked the wettest weekend to visit. Some nice cafes a short walk away for breakfast too. Check in was simple and staff at the front desk were friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is very hip and trendy. Didn't explore much due to being tired but they look to have some nice communal areas, individual communal rooms also. They of course have the sauna and hot tub on the roof however due to the weather we did not use this. We booked a small double as we were only staying for one night. Our room in no way felt small, it had everything we could have wanted. The bed was AMAZING. Built into an alcove of the room between the windows and the partition for the bathroom, it felt so cozy, but was big and comfortable. Aspire to have a bed like this at home one day. We had a lovely night and both slept well. Despite our room overlooking one of the main roads we weren't disturbed by the traffic noises. Would definitely book again.…
Stylish and hip hotel a short metro ride away from the centre of Amsterdam. Our room was clean and functional, exactly what we needed for a sightseeing trip. Bar and rooftop restaurant served great food and beers. Live music on our first night was a surprise and welcome addition. Friendly and welcoming staff.
I just loved this hotel! The staff were very friendly and check-in was easy. The room was a good size and loved the bathroom. There is no closet there but there are a few hooks and hangers. There is a lovely rooftop bar and a sauna. I also loved the decor and lots of places to work if you needed to. I would stay here again for sure!
Such a delightful stay here! Super friendly and helpful staff and a lively and buzzy atmosphere. The hotel used to be a newspaper, then was an artists' community, before being turned into this six storey hotel. But despite the gentrification, it seems to have retained some of all of the latter vibes. The decor is eclectic-industrial and certainly very interesting, with a few clever flourishes that go back to its original uses. It has something of a hipster feel but was not at all pretentious. No designer furniture, lots of handicraft style. There are banks of Macs lined up in the co-working spaces, rooftop hottubs and a DJ plaýing in the bar/restaurant but there are also lots of families (we thought the cabins with shared bathrooms probably were great for them) and non-hipsters roaming around. Our room was wonderful - we booked a medium priced room and ended up with somebody's former corner office on the fourth floor. This gave us the most incredible view over the city as we lay around in a cute cubby house of a bed. The rooms are laid out in slightly odd ways because of the former use of the building but it's no problem really. Note: This is not a particularly luxurious stay. The frills are minimal but this is more than made up for by the great character of the place and all the cute accessories, like hot tubs, work spaces, rooftop bar etc. The location was also fine. It's not as central as some but given the partying that goes on in Amsterdam, that is a good thing. A quiet and restful sleep was worth a very short metro trip to the center (the Metro station is literally outside, it takes 10 minutes to get to the central station) and the tram around the corner will take you to the museum square in another 10. The only minor gripe: Food in the rooftop restaurant is pretty expensive and not particularly exciting, despite the menu's promising descriptions. Would suggest a drink up here because its so lovely but maybe spend your money on dinner elsewhere. Having said that the breakfast was plentiful and varied, with everything from French toast and scrambled eggs to fruits salad and chia pudding. 100% recommend this charming hotel. …
We have just had 4 nights with our older children, 22 and 19. We had the quirky family room with suspended bed which was a laugh in itself. What a fantastic break! . The hotel is immaculately clean and comfortable. Lots to do and see in the hotel and ideally located for the metro to other local attractions. We will definitely be back!
I had a short couple of days stay at this very funky hotel in the middle of Amsterdam. The room was clean and with a very cool layout, although with a few things to update (sink, bathroom). Breakfast was limited in offerings, but tasty and sufficient. I also ate dinner and it was delicious. There was a 10 min walk towards city center, so very good positioning. The staff was helpful and with a positive attitude. I would come back to this hotel if coming again to Amsterdam.
I stayed 4 nights in this hotel during a business trip (small double room). The location is a big plus: in front of the metro station, close to a numbers of bus and tram lines, everywhere is easily reachable, you can also walk to the city centre. The room is tiny, but there's enough space for one person. The bed is comfortable. Wifi is free and works well. There's no working desk in the room, only a small table. There are no shelves in the bathroom/around the sink, which would be useful. The shower and the wc can be seen from the bed, with no privacy at all if the room is shared by 2 people (so this is for all guests to consider). I appreciated that cleaning is done only after the 4th night, if do not explicitly required by the guest. This is a true compliance to green policies. Noise isolation could be improved, especially with the noise coming from outside (the hotel is on a busy street). Maybe ask for a room on the backside of the hotel which should be more calm. There's club at the top floor, so I am wondering if upper rooms could be noisy? I also enjoyed the restaurant (both the location and the food), the breakfast (even if the sweet component is a bit scarce) and the working area in the hotel ground floor. I did not try either the spa or the club. In any case, my stay was good and I certainly will consider Volkshotel again!…
Absolutely loved this hotel - such a memorable place to stay. I booked my stay last minute after other travel plans fell through on the recommendation of a friend - since then another friend has also been to this hotel (not knowing we'd both been). As a journalist, the history of the hotel - an old newspaper office - also appealed to me. My favourite part was the hot tubs and sauna on the roof - I was worried they'd be really busy but usually there was always at least one free in the evenings and they were empty in the mornings. So lovely to sit back in warm water and gaze out over the city (even if the views are better on the other side). I'd deliberately requested a room on a mid-level floor facing away from the road after reading some previous reviews and I wanted peace and quiet and was a bit nervous about whether there'd be a real party atmosphere (there's a lively atmosphere in the ground floor bar/cafe area on the weekend but it's nice, not crazy). I got this beautiful corner room with amazing views over the city and it was blissful. It had a long desk built along all one side which was really useful - both for putting clothes on but also for when I got takeaway (there's a really good Korean place nearby - The Bab Amsterdam Oost). Only thing a bit strange about the room was some cutouts in the bathroom divider - I assume most people booking a double room would be a couple or a single traveller but would be a bit weird if with friends. Location while not central was nice - you can walk in along the river in about 25 minutes or cycle in. Easy to get to from airport too. I did hire a bike from the hotel (they have lots) - although a warning for any fellow short people out there you can only lower the seat so far and they are the ones you have to back pedal to brake. I thought I'd be fine as an experienced London cyclist, but at 5ft3 and unable to put my feet on the floor easily, I did rather embarrassingly crash into a row of bikes shortly after taking off and was wobbly for the rest of my day (it does also take time to get used to how many cyclists are on the roads + also a lot of pedestrians in the centre who aren't looking where they're going). I think if you're 5ft6+ you'd be fine though - but also know you can hire bikes with brakes on the handle bar in the centre. The hotel has some decent food options too - the top floor restaurant is a real experience but you can also get yummy burgers & some snacks in the cafe/bar area on the ground floor if you're after something more casual. Breakfast was decent, but you can get much nicer options nearby or in the centre for a similar price. I didn't get round to do any of the events they had on offer - but was tempted by the yoga classes & they also had on a film festival one night while I was there (the only time the bar was really busy).…
We are a family with 13 year old boys. The hotel looks cool and they enjoyed the table tennis and table footie that was downstairs near the bar. Staff all friendly and helpful. Our family room was trendy and looked cool with a good view but the double bed was high on a platform up steep steps so not ideal if you are older or need the loo in the night. The boys were on single beds below. There were a couple of stools and a desk by the window and some hanging space and cubby holes but it’s not a room for relaxing in. The shower room has no door which was a bit shocking for the teens. And there is shower gel but no conditioner. We were there mid week so no problems with noise. V easy acces to center on metro and we found nice places to eat breakfast nearby. I would recommend but not to my older parents!…
