The place is welcoming and so the staff is. You can have breakfast, which may consists of muesli, milk and fruit, or opt for a "hot breakfast", which includes pancakes, French toasts, bread with cheese and ham (to name a few). The rooms are not that big, but if you plan to spend 3 or 4 days in Amsterdam, they...

I recently stayed here with 6 other friends and we were skeptics at first because we rarely stay in hostels but this was fantastic. The staff were so so friendly and helpful, the rooms were basic but clean and cleaned daily. It was cheap and cheerful definitely with brilliant extras such as free wifi, free use of luggage room and...

We were 3 women staying here. It was a 16 bed dorm. So yes, the hostel is a good option for budget travelers. Lovely area outside where you can enjoy a sumptuous breakfast. Staff were nice and helpful. The bathrooms were outside and a bit too small. But cant complain since it was a common facility. All in all a good...

Shelter City was a great surprise, very positive I think. In addition to the localization near everything that is important. I wanna thank specifically to Gerson, the man who saves my life in the last night because of "you know what, that's Amsterdam". All the staff were incredible, but with my reasons, I'll never forget Gerson and the Shelter City....

My friends and I enjoyed our time at Shelter City. The facilities are clean and well-kept, and the staff are enthusiastic and engaging. I particularly enjoyed the hot breakfast options and the inexpensive dinners available for purchase. My only recommendations are for the hostel to acquire new pillows and provide more outlets in the rooms for 16 guests. Otherwise, I'm...

I was afraid after reading some reviews about drugs, alcohol, etc. I am a conservative person yet, open mind to visit a city like Amsterdam. I Wanted to see the beauty of the canals, museums, train station without being offered any cake. It was Summer, sunny, warm day, so was nice to walk around the streets, see the bikes and...

The location and area was great! Staff was extremely helpful and nice. Great customer service. We stayed in a four person female room, we had no issues during our stay. The rooms were cleaned every morning! The only down side is that the breakfast was a bit small and the hostel itself is not too modern. However looks aside this...

The fact that the hostel is religious is kinda funny, but it wasn't a problem even though I'm not christian. The only downside of this is that they don't allow you to drink alcohol inside, which I think it's completely unnecessary, but ok. The staff was super nice and made us feel safe. They offer you the option to charge...

Hoi Amanda! Thank you so much for your kind review! Thank you for your openness. Indeed, we welcome people from all kinds of religious/nonreligious background. We feel it would be funny to sort of welcome only those alike - in short, we want to practice hospitality. And you are right, our outdoor area is one of the aspects of the...

The shelter city hostel is a very good place to stay for a few days in Amsterdam thanks to its perfect location or the warm welcome of the crew. The rooms are ok and the bathrooms are maybe a bit small but it's compensated with a good breakfast included!

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
