The Flying Pig Uptown, a social little gem just outside the main centre yet close to all the main attractions. A great spot while solo traveling, meet new people and wonder the city all within minutes of the hostel ! Stayed here for 3 nights while visiting Amsterdam. Ideal location, situated right next to Vondelpark and close distance to all the main museums e.g Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh and Stedelijk. It is uptown as seen in the name and a very upmarket area from my wonders of the neighbours, so yes, very safe. I booked a 14 shared mix bed room which was the cheapest option however with luck got a 10 bed on arrival ! The bedrooms are adequate sized, beds are vv comfy with the addition of a sink/ mirror. Locker space under each bunk bed, * Do Not Forget * to bring a lock of your own unless your super trustworthy… ! Showers / toilet / urinal on each floor, showers being individual with fantastic power, space to put your towel etc and soap on the side ! * Towels, do cost 3€ I believe if you do forget your own.* Certainly my favourite aspect of the hostel, can’t beat a good shower in the morning ! :’) The bar come sit down / smoking area were all very clean and spacious. A glass panel separates the bar / the smoking area and is all very well maintained. The bar run by staff are all very professional and friendly. Lots of new faces to the team and all very willing to chat and get to know guests which is a great plus ! The bar stays open till 3am so, no excuses ! Kitchen usage is very fair, quiet a small space for such a big hostel. Lots of equipment available and more if left over by guests departed. The down side of the hostel that gives reason for me to select only 3 stars out of 5 is that; the rooms are very very stuffy. No window access due to safety reason perfectly acceptable but to have ventilation as an alternative replacement really wasn’t enough. I was roasting each night and found it very hard to sleep. Stuffy in March… can not imagine in summer..?! Fingers crossed, air conditioning is available during the summer months otherwise be prepared to cook .. The main major downside to this hostel is that there is NO ACCESS to the kitchen in the mornings. Only opened between 12.30-10.30 each day ?? The idea of naming and hosting a ‘backpacking hostel’ you would imagine you would do your best to offer your ‘ Self-Catering Facilities ‘ full time. I had bought and prepped breakfast items so I could cook each morning, this of course to save money.. only to have to go out and buy it elsewhere.. The hostel does offer breakfast which I decided to get on my last day for convenience but is very very poor. 5€ for cereal/ toast some quarter sized apples / sliced cucumbers etc… tea/ juice/ coffee. Yes, this may be adequate and perfect filling for some but for 5€ I was really expecting a little more. Even a hard boiled egg or sausage could have been offered especially since the kitchen is ‘closed’ in the morning… Side from the few let downs of this hostel, I do think it is still great value. You get what you pay for and the location is more then perfect at that price range. Most of team here are top class and are very open to questions and recommendations yet some are very new and inexperienced as a team together I think they work very well. In conclusion, I would only recommend this hostel for younger people / party people. A great buzzy spot. Cheap drink, great people and good fun ! Certainly more fun for you party people over the quiet relaxing type ! …
I love this hostel. Although the bathrooms are arguably disgusting, I could overlook it because of the amount of effort otherwise put in to making this hostel a great stay. The place has lots of character and a lively atmosphere. The bar downstairs is only for guests and is a great way to meet people. Lamps and plugs are provided for every bed in a room as well as a sink in each room. You can see the effort & care put into making this place a great stay.
Great place with an awesome atmosphere! The staff is cool and knowledgeable and the Argentinian dude is the best! Will definitely be back again here Loved the park just in front the hostel! Btw make sure you book it directly with them and you get a free breakfast
I came for 1 night...and i stayed for 3! The hostel vibe is awesome for travellers! The bar awesome to meet friends! Luisa showed us all the bars around and alfredo explained me all the secrets of Amsterdam! Cheers to all the staff! What a place!
I have stayed here 3 times, once on a birthday weekend, once on a passing visit and again last year! The area is terrible, your surrounded by basic brits! everyone is either on a stag do, come to sleep with prostitutes, or to smoke weed in one of the many cafes! This is not the real holland or Netherlands and is basically a circus for students on gap years! Each time I stayed here was because my friends had already booked it and I was too drunk to notice the state of the place ! shame on me
