Welcome - easy online check in prior to arrival plus a welcome drink
Reception/bar - small but effective (daytime contractors carrying out refurbishments were quiet and considerate)
Dining room - comfortable with an adequate selection of food
Room - clean, with air conditioning and a good sized walk in shower
I will be staying again
The breakfast is lacking, only in comparison to so many other European hotels that we've visited. The breakfast is to "order," and the chef seems to focus on one order at a time, so it's very slow. Plan accordingly if you've got a tour or a plane to catch.
Our room was very comfortable, with the most luxurious pillows we've experienced in a long time. The lighting in the room is rather dim, with one desk-top light not even plugged in; due to the fact that there was no receptacle anywhere near the desk. The flooring in laminate, so bring slippers if that's an issue for you. The bathroom is extremely small with regards to sink-top space; there is none.
Apparently, because the flooring is laminate, housekeeping doesn't often sweep said flooring. We saw numerous particles that remained on the floor during our stay. And don't look under the elevated bed, unless you want a disturbing reality-check. Upon checkout, I always look around and under everything, just to make sure we're not accidentally leaving anything behind. Wow! I'd say they haven't swept under the bed in months. Again, this is a bed elevated off the floor, so you can see underneath the bed from one side to the other. Just wow!
Nevertheless, I'd still recommend this hotel, I just question their star rating.

At the reception
Room is nice and clean
Ordered a bottle of wine in advance for the room and macarons no bottle opener present called to the reception they would bring the bottle opener ASAP
Sleep well
In the morning breakfast great stress at the breakfast room the cooks talk loud to each other there was clearly stress
Everything went wrong
A cook also entered into a discussion with a boy
Early morning entertainment but not really professional
Nice beds
Definitely come back again
Shower floor slopes toward room instead of drain so when using shower a squeegee needs to be used frequently to prevent bathroom from getting wet. Could use more shelving in bathroom and shower.
The hotel is stylish, colourful, and relaxed, with excellent facilities, a lovely breakfast on offer and an amazing onsite restaurant, ‘Senses’.
But the style comes with a lot of substance too. Standards of service are incredibly high, with staff who are attentive and friendly. They always offer help and expertise to make your stay in the city better, whether it is a list of great restaurants or advice on the best bars, they are always ready to help.
Our room was very comfortable, nice and warm and thoroughly cleaned and kept tidy during our stay. The public areas of the hotel are well-maintained and relaxing.
We will always book the Albus whenever we return to Amsterdam, because they provided a lovely, relaxing experience, made us feel very welcome, and gave us the feeling that we were staying somewhere special.
Thanks, we can’t wait to come back.
The welcome with a glass of cava was very pleasant. The employee spoke Dutch.
We had a quiet Splendid City King room (209) at the back of the hotel. The space between the bed and the wall to which the TV was attached was extremely tight. The bed felt a bit hard for us but that is a matter of taste.
The shower room was unheated, no underfloor heating, with bare feet on the cold tiles. Musty towels. No outlet for toiletry bags. The rain shower was almost completely calcified.
In room 203, the hair dryer came loose from the wall mount.
The menu at Senses was good, nice service, the wine pairing was top notch, but unfortunately the dishes were insufficiently warm.
The biggest setback was the breakfast:
- the bread baskets were not refilled
- the employee service probably had a rough evening/night. Unfriendly and totally uninterested, slow, threw everything on the table. A very unpleasant experience to be served like this.
- it took at least 30 min until the ordered dishes came to the table. The bacon was black and hard; of the 6 poached eggs, 3 were with a hard yolk running instead of a hard yolk.
This breakfast, which should have been a nice end to our family outing, did not have the desired effect at all.
At check-out the staff were English speaking which made it difficult to put our findings there.
Immediately after booking (so three months prior) we had changed our room to a suite and upon arrival this change hadn't been made. It was quickly sorted, but I did wonder what would have happened had a suite not been available. I had asked for a bathtub if possible but one wasn't available, fair enough but issues arose. The suite was spacious but ill equipped. No storage in the bathroom at all, not even towel rails to hang the towels. The shower flooded with water every time we used it and there was a large squeegee in our bathroom we presumed to try and sweep the water away, whilst showering. Not ideal at any age never mind for older clientele. It was not possible to even enjoy a basic shower without having to constantly monitor the water levels! Not what I expect from a suite and the price we paid.
Room service was patchy, no tissues replaced and our shower mat was taken away after the first day and not replaced until we asked. I don't feel you should have to ask for the basics of room service.
Breakfast was not explained to us on our first morning so we were left to figure out what to do. It has now changed to a somewhat limited a la carte breakfast menu, mostly eggs! It was cooked very well but little choice, and my order was wrong one morning. Supplemented with a few pastries and some fruit. Have had much better breakfasts in other hotels, certainly not worth the money.
We had noise issues (a LOT of noise from room above) for 4/5 hours each night that wasn't addressed by staff.
Finally beware if you use this hotel's recommended taxi service which we did on our way home, advertised as 55 euros and were charged 85 euros by the taxi driver. The hotel did offer to refund the money but a week later we are still waiting.
A disappointing stay for the money we paid.
