Hotel Pontsteiger has garnered appreciation from guests for its cleanliness and tranquil atmosphere, with modern baths and cozy rooms, complemented by comfortable beds and great showers. However, feedback suggests that the rooms may feel cramped due to a lack of space, poor air conditioning, and insufficient natural light. The hotel's location receives accolades for its scenic views and easy access to the city center. Service experiences vary, with many finding staff friendly, though others report a lack of responsiveness. Reviewers also question the hotel's value, pointing to high prices and extra costs.

I have recently stayed at Pontsteiger during my visit to Amsterdam and wanted to share the review with the rest of the world of what to expect when you go there.

The hotel's location is in a very nice spot next to a huge canal. However, the hotel itself is on the Ground floor so when you see its picture on any website do not get confused by thinking its all part of the hotel. Hotel is on the ground floor and the rest of the floors are an apartment which is not under hotel. So do not expect or hope to get rooms on higher floor.

The hotel can be reached by bus from Amsterdam Centraal Station. From the bus stop its walkable distance. The charges for bus is 3.2 Euro each way from Central Station. You. need to find the bus stop on Amsterdam Central which is on the other side of the station and not on the city side. You will walk up through the escalator and go to stop G and catch the bus from there. The details are available on the hotel website and quite accurate.

The reception. is on the left side of the building when you approach it. In fact, the reception and the restaurant are in the same place so please do not try to. enter any of the buildings which say entrance here.

Most of the rooms do not have they are completely closed with the only glass (not a window because you cannot open it as well) to the corridor of the hotel area. The rooms are completely closed. no external ventilation. Some of the rooms have views but that is not very evident with any of the booking sites unless they clearly say "room with a view". Some of the rooms have a huge round pillar (here in India we call it a beam which supports the structure) inside the room itself which makes it very inconvenient to sit on the bed next to it.

Amenity wise you have free internet, coffee, kettle, bath accessories, etc. If you need plates and other crockery you can ask the hotel staff and collect it from reception. They are good to provide them to you but they do not have enough staff to send it to your room so please be mindful of that.

Personally I found this hotel to be costlier than others considering the features and overall stay experience. In case you are traveling for business, it is better to stay near the airport at hotels that allow you to travel through the hotel shuttle and costs much cheaper.

The food delivery from deliveroo or ubereats charges you for delivery as well, in case you decide to order food at the hotel.

Dear guest, Thank you so much for the recent stay with us and for taking the time to write this review. It is great that you are reviewing several points from our hotel, however, we are very sorry you experienced some discomfort in our facilities and that is of course not our intention. Regarding to the building, in every agency appears only the pictures of the rooms because we also don’t want to the guest get confuse thinking that the rooms are also on the up floor. However we are sorry that was not clear enough for you. We will try our best to make this more clear for the future guests. Open windows affect the efficiency of a building's air-conditioning system and involves danger: that by opening windows, guests will soon be falling out of them – by accident or on purpose so that is why we don’t have the option to open the windows. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do with the structure of how the building has been made, but we are sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. We thank you once more for your words and sincerely apologies. We hope to welcome you back in the near future. With warm regards, Team Hotel Pontsteiger

The hotel itself is in a beautiful location overlooking the water and the decor has a modern feel, however make sure you are aware of the room being chosen. The pictures provided for the room we booked on Booking.com were not the same as the room we were put in. An "Economy Room" on Booking translates to an "indoor room" on the hotels site which is a room with no view. While this was not a huge problem to us, what was quite weird for us was the fact that 2 of 4 walls of the room are actually just floor to ceiling glass with 2 layers of curtains. This means that if the curtains were to be opened, anyone walking through the corridors could look into the room. In addition, given the glass walls, noise is a concern as well as we could hear guests as they walked by and doors slamming woke us up quite early in the morning, which was not pleasant. The room also has a nice tough by providing a Nespresso coffee machine however there were no coffee pods provided to use this facility.

Other than the above, the actual rooms were relatively comfortable and receiption was very helpful with suggesting travel options when there was a train strike in Amsterdam as well as helping us rent bikes for the day at EUR10 per day.

When you click on the room type on Booking.com website, the pictures show the features of the rooms. Here it is shown that the rooms have a window overlooking the corridor. We apologize if this was unclear prior to booking the room. We do hope that you will give Hotel Pontsteiger another chance in the future. Kind regards, Kimberley Team Hotel Pontsteiger

We stayed one night in room 30, the room had an incredible almost waterlevel view towards the old grain silo apartment building.
We where helped really friendly and professional at the check-in that made us feel welcome right away.
The room has high ceiling and it has tipical city visit feel to it, efficient and tasteful.
We started noticing that the room was probably cleaned in a hurry here and there it wasn't that spotless, but not disturbing to ask for a new room. We did found a left food delivery bag under the bed. And and the sheets could have needed better inspection too.
( washed sheets but stains that aren't removed)
All over we did enjoy our stay very much, the view is really amazing. And we got excellent service from the staff, at check-in and check out.

I absolutely loved this stay, I will be staying here again for sure! I stayed for my birthday and it was amazing! Bluetooth marshal speakers in your room really was the highlight of it. Not to mention the amazing coffee machine. TV with good selection of channels for a briefing citizen travelling to Amsterdam. We had a river view which was amazing and a free ferry station located outside that takes u in to Amsterdam central. Not to mention the beautiful walk into Amsterdam from this hotel. The staff were all super friendly and nice! Bikes to rent and also lovely free lemon water in reception.

Dear Management,
unfortunately our room was dusty, disgusting stains on carpet and furniture, brown spots on toilet and near the sink dirt on walls.

Even after complaining and a offered deep cleaning dust was still everywhere.

All rooms are on the ground floor. Glass windows from floor to ceiling. So everybody can see you at all time. Without AC on high you die from the heat. You can't open a window for fresh air they are all sealed. Oxygen will not hold for a complete night!

Breakfast got from day to day less! You can't call it a breakfast buffet. Only a few things even when you come early scrambled eggs and bacon is cold and covered with paper behind the counter.

I have 15 years of hotel experience and I am not a person that complains for everything. But its not worth the money at all.

The cafe is never opened the bar is not a real bar because there ist no barkeeper. Stuff is friendly but there is only 1 person doing everything from check in, housekeeping, serving breakfast so on.

Even when you ask for 2 extra towels you get 2 bathroom rugs. For recommended boat rental spot we walked 45 minutes and that spot was closed since over 2 years.

Can't recommend it. It's more a youth hostel. No soul. The future doesn't look bright at all for this property.

Dear 992gj, First of all our apologies for the issues during your stay. This is not what we want out guests to experience when they come to Hotel Pontsteiger. Thank you for taking the time to write this review and give the feedback. We will take your feedback with us in training our housekeeping staff to make sure this will improve in the future. I am sorry to hear that even after a request for deep-clean it was not up to standard. It is true that the hotel and all it's rooms are based in the ground floor. This is also described in the different website to make sure that the guest are made aware of this prior to arrival. We apologize if this was unclear. For safety reasons the decision was made to not have the option to open a window in all our rooms. Our reception is open 24 hours per day to help with either the airco settings or adding an extra fan in the room to make sure that the temperature would be suitable. The café is open from 07:00 till 23:00 for drinks each day. It is true that due to shortage in staff, the receptionist is multitasking. This is one of the reasons why we do not serve lunch or dinner in the café. Again our apologies that all these issues happened during your stay. We always strive to give our guests the best time in the hotel. We do hope that you will give Hotel Pontsteiger another chance in the future. Kind regards, Kimberley Manager Hotel Pontsteiger

My son and I stayed for three nights at this modern stylish hotel. We were in Amsterdam to celebrate his 19th birthday and were welcomed with a personal (handwritten) note in the room offering us two complimentary drinks from the hotel bar. Such a sweet gesture! The receptionist was ever so kind and helpful making us feel very welcome. The room & bathroom, the decor, and the view of the harbour was stunning. Due to the Covid-19, a bag with breakfast supplies was delivered outside the room every morning which was really nice.
We would definitely recommend Hotel Pontsteiger to anyone visiting Amsterdam and would be happy to return ourselves in the future.

Fabulous few days away!

We’ve just returned from a few days away staying at this hotel, the first time we have been to Amsterdam.

The hotel is very clean, staff very friendly with modern amenities. We had a room with a view over the ferry dock which was lovely. The bathroom was modern, beds very comfortable and quiet.

The hotel is around a mile from the centre and is very easily accessible by either the free ferry outside the hotel or you can get a bus which is around a 5 minute walk.

Do not get a taxi as they are super expensive, the public transport is very easy and gets you to the centre in 5 mins.

Highly recommended hotel if your are like us and want to visit this beautiful city but do not want to stay right in the middle of it all x

Have just returned from a stay at this lovely hotel, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Upon arrival , we were greeted by a friendly receptionist, who made check in swift and straightforward.
I had booked a comfort double which was clean and stylish, with a lovely view of the harbour. We were provided with everything we needed. The shower was particularly nice!
We had heard the breakfast was lovely but the bed was so comfortable, we weren’t actually able to get up in time to find out! However, we were able to order a tasty pizza when we hadn’t had a chance to eat one evening which was brought to our room. Also, the barman mixed a lovely gin!
The location of the hotel was lovely and an Uber to the town was extremely reasonably priced.
All in all, this was a lovely hotel to stay in, with friendly staff in a beautiful setting. Highly recommended!

Arrived at 4pm to the reception full of guests waiting to check in. The receptionist seemed annoyed that we had arrived! She pointed out everyone who was waiting to check in and told us to sit down and wait also. When we asked what was happening she could not give us an explanation, when we asked how long we’d be waiting it was ‘I don’t know’. After 2 hours of waiting we could finally check in. No explanation or apology whatsoever. The only compensation we received was 2 free drinks from the bar. The receptionist left the front desk unattended so that she could walk us to our room (there was only 1 member of staff present at all times). We were walking down the corridor to our room when the receptionist told us to wait where we were as she ‘needed to check something was fixed in our room’ (??). She darted off down the corridor and into our room whilst we waited outside. She finally came out and told us we could go into our room. Again no explanation. There were 4 USB ports in the room however none of them worked, so we had to walk to the closest shop (20 mins) to purchase an adapter for €17 (the hotel have a box of adaptors however none fit my charger and you had to pay a €25 deposit to borrow them). That night me and my partner were laying in bed and all of a sudden somebody burst into our room?! No idea if this was intentional or accidental, as the girl ran away giggling once she saw we were in the room. My partner confronted her and she denied coming into our room. The next morning we were awoken to the sound of construction and builders talking VERY loudly to one another, right outside of our room. When we got up and left for the day, the corridor was absolutely full of tools and mess, and the builders had removed the handles from the main door to our building without any temporary replacement. There were no other exits in the building so this meant we had to stick our fingers through the holes of the (very heavy door) in order to open it. This also meant literally anybody could do the same and enter our building. We arrived back to the hotel after a day out to discover the door handle had been replaced, however so had the key fob so we couldn’t get into our room (another walk to reception to get this sorted). We finally got back into our room to see the room hadn’t been cleaned. The maid knocked shortly after (around 5pm) however we had already settled down for the evening. She cleaned our room the next day however this only consisted of making bed

My Dad and I booked this through Eurostar. It was the cheapest hotel on the site at the time of booking and did not disappoint.
The location is good - short 10 min walk to tram 5 which takes you into the centre or bus 48 which takes you to Central Station.
The hotel is right next to the Pontsteiger Ferry which was great when we rented bikes from the hotel and rode to the windmills in Zaanse Schans.
The hotel was very clean and had good tea/coffee facilities. We had a large bathroom, plenty of towels and a nice shower.
All the staff were helpful and polite, with excellent English.
No complaints from us and would recommend.
