The Chalet Hotel Steinbock is a beautiful wooden chalet, right in the centre of Grindelwald, just next to the first gondola (skiing area in winter, hiking paradise in the summer). The Steinbock was mentioned in books in 1700, but was completely rebuilt in 1991. It is famous for its restaurant - the most popular restaurant in town - with Italian and Swiss cuisine. The restaurant is famous for the huge steaks, the great pizzas, the excellent liver, to just name a few dishes.

We landed at this hotel because all other hotels in our budget range were fully booked! We have been welcome and a very reasonable offer was made immediately. Upon my request I was shown the rooms I had selected. The room were very clean, comfortable with super clean bathroom, double beds for sleeping and ample provision of duvet, blankets and pillows. Although our rooms were on the main street, it was well insulated and we had a quiet night. As I requested a parking for our car, the manager immediately organized a place in the hotel back parking lot. Super service! We ate at the hotel restaurant, well known in town for its Italian cuisine. Service was a bit slow since the restaurant was full and we have been very pleased with pizzas , pasta and selection of Barbera wine. The next morning we enjoyed a nice, complete and tasty breakfast in a small dedicate part of the restaurant. The room prices are very reasonable compared to other hotels of the same category. We appreciated we did not need to go out to eat and drink, etc.. Bus stops in both direction are within 50 meters of the hotel, which is great in the morning rush hours when all tourists want to go to the mountains or the train station which is 10 Mn. down the main road.

Dear guest from Morocco, many thanks for your wonderful review. We are very happy to read, that you enjoyed your stay and also the food you had in our restaurant. The hotel has got nice rooms and a very popular restaurant, however no other facilities and this is why the price is lower than in other hotels. For people looking for just a good place to sleep and loving Italian food, they feel perfectly well at the Steinbock. With best regards Jackie and Salvatore Ponzio and staff

This place was by far cheapest in Grindelwald- and it’s right in front of a good bus stop (firstbahn), and a cool outdoor bar that is always crowded Helpful people also Room was big but the bed and pillows below average- didn’t have a great night sleep...

Dear Steinbock guest, we are renovating all the rooms, one by one. As the hotel is open all year round and as we have 20 rooms only, we cannot renovate more rooms together. You have probably been sleeping in one of the rooms that has not been renovated so far. With best regards Jackie and Salvatore Ponzio,

We stopped in here for a snack after a long trek from First to Grosse Scheidegg. It was 16:30 and very quiet. We did read the reviews from Trip Advisor and saw comments about flies but we thought well it’s September and not as hot as the height of summer so shouldn’t be too bad. We only went here because a well recommenced other place was closed on Wednesday’s. We initially sat outside but the flies were too bad, so we moved inside, well it was a swarm fest! For real!! Even before food arrived and worse afterwards. I sprayed DEET spray on the backs of our hands and the edge of the table in an effort to deter the bugs, it worked a little. We asked the head waitress to light a candle (regular one not citronella insect repellant one). My husband out a piece of paper to cover his beer from the flies and when the waitress asked if there was a problem with the beer he said it was to keep off the flies and said we hoped it would deter the flies she shrugged her shoulders. We ordered one large pizza diavola with Gorgonzola as extra between two. We were dubious as to the precise origin of the meat topping. We quickly left, and to be honest the staff didn’t appear too surprised. The toilets were clean enough, the wine list was comprehensive enough, although crawling with flies as it was read. Don’t go get a bowl of chips and a drink somewhere else if you want a snack after your hike.

Dear Sir/Madam, many thanks for having visited our restaurant. We do have a problem with flies, that is correct, like many other restaurants in the mountains. And there is not much we can do. We have spent a lot of money for a lot of different ways to get rid of them, but we only managed so far to reduce them, not to eliminate them. You mentioned September, not being a problem. Besides the Steinbock, we own another hotel in town. There we had a big problem with flies on the upper floor corner rooms of the hotel. We have however only a problem for 2-3 weeks in spring and 2-3 weeks in autumn. Summer is no problem and winter anyhow neither. Also there we have spent a fortune to get rid of them and it might be, that we now succeded. If we have, we will install the same system at the Steinbock. That the fly problem is not a problem of every day is proven by the fact, that we never had such a huge number of guests eating at our restaurant like this summer 2019. Otherwise the place would be empty all the time. But yes, we are really sorry, that you had that problem while visiting our restaurant. With best regards Jackie and Salvatore Ponzio

My wife, teenager and I stayed at Hotel Steinbock in Grindelwald, Switzerland in February. We arrived at the Grindelwald train station with ski bags and boot bags and didn’t feel like lugging them on the 10 minute walk to the hotel. The hotel staff was nice enough to pick us up and, when we checked out, they took us back to the train station. To contact the hotel upon arriving at the train station, I went to the Tourist Office near the train station and asked them to call the hotel. We were picked up within 10 minutes. Our primary vacation interest was skiing. Hotel Steinbock is great for skiers as it is located beside the Firstbahn Gondola and there is a bus stop 20 meters from the hotel’s front door for skiers who want to go to Grund and ride the ski train to Klein Scheidegg or gondola to Mannlichen. Hotel Steinbock has an Italian restaurant which consumes the entire ground level floor of the hotel (interestingly, there is no hotel lobby, only a window in which to check-in and out). The restaurant fills the hotel with rich Mediterranean aromas. This restaurant serves great food, has a personable staff and has good service (we ate there twice and our food order was ready and served within 20 minutes, even when the restaurant was packed). It is one of the most popular restaurants in Grindelwald. It was always full while we were there and is best to make a reservation. Our room wasn’t huge but it was clean, comfortable and quiet. It was on the side of the hotel, away from the busy main street and had great views of the Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn. Included in the room rate is a delicious breakfast buffet, eggs, bacon, meats, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, cereals, fresh baked breads, jellies, coffee, teas, and orange juice. I can recommend Hotel Steinbock without hesitation.

We are very happy to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you also loved the food at our Italian restaurant. We were in a OK to nice room with a balcony overlooking the outside seating area of the pizza restaurant. Plus - clean, comfortable beds, good standard Minus - no air conditioning - it was hot 30C plus and so we had to have the windows open but it was very noisy outside late into the evevning - from pizza restaurant and because the hotel is on the main street - no kettle or fridge in the room which is unusual in a 3 star hotel - check-out at 7.50pm, no receptionist, service staff couldn't help so I had to leave with payment being taken from the card I'd used to book the room through Booking.com although I didn't want to use that card for payment.

Dear Steinbock guest, we are sorry, that there was no receptionist at 07.50pm anymore. There must have been some kind of an urgency, that our receptist was not there anymore. Regarding the A/C, we would like to inform you, that not even the 5 star hotel in Grindelwald has A/C and that even the "Leading hotel of the World" in Interlaken, where the temperatures are about 5°C hotter, has only a few rooms with A/C since one year. Or to make things short, you will not find 5% of the hotels in the Alps with A/C, because such hot temperatures like right now are very, very unusual. We had something similar the last time in 2003. The restaurant at the hotel is open from morning very early to late night, this the reason why there is no minibar. With best regards Jackie and Salvatore Ponzio,

First of all I have to thank all the staff from the Hotel and Restaurant for their lovely and caring approach to me my wife and kid. For us it was a wonderful time, when we reach Grindelwald it was raining and we thought all our vacation plans will be changed. Once we reach the hotel warm welcome from the staff change all our mood. We have enjoyed our stay for three days. The rooms were too good and clean and they gave extra care for my kid and provided food for the baby when ever we need and the restaurant staff were extremely helpful. We had booked for morning breakfast and they gave us special food for me wife and my baby. We really thank the staff from the hotel and restaurant for a wonderful stay.

This is a simple and very delightful little hotel. It was recommended to us and we were not disappointed. Salvatore is an excellent host and all the staff are very efficient and friendly. The only slight downside is the noise of the traffic outside so perhaps best to get a room at the back.

Dear Sarah, many thanks for your great review. We are very happy to read, that you enjoyed your stay with us. The back side of the hotel is definitely quieter, at least until we will install new, triple glazing, windows. But, as it is not possible to drive through Grindelwald, there is not much traffic at night, but yes, there is also not none. With best regards Jackie and Salvatore Ponzio

We had the pleasure of staying at Chalet Hotel Steinbock for 3 nights in late July . I immediately fell in love with this beautiful town and the lovely hotel that was welcoming, cozy and family run. We had what I believed was the best room in the house, room number 206, because it came with a balcony which had awe inspiring views of the alps and looked down onto the Main Street. The room was clean and well presented, had all the expected features, room safe, ample cupboard space & a tv (not that we switched it on the whole trip, so much more to do outside). The breakfast in the mornings was lovely, you could have omelettes, scrambled eggs or hard boiled eggs made to order, just ask a waiter and staff were always keen to get coffees or teas. The croissants were so delicious I had to hold myself back after one. All in all a wonderful hotel with friendly staff. I had a great time and am looking forward to visiting this hotel again next time I make the trip.

Room was clean and spacious. Wonderful views if your room has a balcony or faces the Main Street. Some of the best tap water in the world and recommended for drinking with glasses provided in the bathroom. Highly efficient housekeeping had our room made up well before midday. Excellent high speed Wifi. Included breakfast was tasty and would appeal to European travellers, but a cooked breakfast is available by asking the friendly waiter/waitress. Clean and tidy hotel which is an ideal base to explore all that Grindelwald has to offer summer or winter. When you are back from a busy day, the hotel restaurant is highly recommended, especially the Pizzas. The hotel owners Jackie and Salvi made us truly feel welcome. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We will be back!
