Travellers' Choice
The very walls that greet you as you approach the Hotel Derby are steeped in history. The "Hotel de la Gare" was built here by the legendary Captain Gsteiger at the end of the 19th century. The same underlying principle applied then as it does now: we want to offer our guests a holiday that will long remain with them as a happy memory. Just travelling to the Derby is a pleasure in itself. The journey by rail could hardly be easier. We are passionate about hospitality and welcome you with a very special combination of attention to details and unobtrusive service. Stylish rooms and suites offer you plenty of space to unwind, relax and take in the splendid Mountain View. All rooms offer view to the surrounding mountains and are equipped with shower or bath/toilet, satellite TV, minibar and safe. The junior suites additionally provide a separate sitting corner. Most of the rooms have a balcony. In total 4 restaurants are at your choice. Either for an elegant dining experience, a tasteful 5-course-menu, a hearty Swiss dish or one of the various fondue specialities, our knowledgeable staff will be happy to advise you and to complete your stay by an attentive service.

Wonderful location right by the train stop. Rooms are small but nice and clean. Coffee, fridge, and room safe. Nice little balcony with table and chairs. Good service especially the front desk. Restaurant was adequate and the food was good.

Hotel's Favourite
Superb hotel for skiing. Only a few steps from the railway. Excellent food, with the possibility of a fondue at no extra cost. Cleaning staff are exceptional, possibly the cleanest hotel we have been in. Staff are efficient and friendly. Oana and Dominic were fantastic waiters, who made our stay exceptional. Any hotel would cherish such great staff. Hopefully will return in the future. Grindelwald has much to do for non-skiers, as well. The trip through the Eiger North Face to the Jungfraujoch is a fabulous experience.

On arrival we were tired and late. Fortunately there was no long walk to the hotel as its next to the station. (do not be put off by this it's the perfect position and no noise heard in the room). Barbara on reception ensured we got some food and drink. We booked an Eiger room view and I would recommend this to you pref floor 3 or better still 4. The views are stunning in this hotel!. There is decking to sit out on and enjoy all the views as well as your balcony x The beds and pillows were so comfy. Clean towels daily. Shampoo conditioner and body lotion supplied. Hairdryer in bathroom. A fridge in the room was so helpful. The food was excellent as was the service. We expected to have to eat out some nights but a 4 course meal of great quality on the half board basis meant we stayed in. Breakfast good quality too. Beer reasonable price all the other drinks compatible to the area. Marion on reception and Barbara basically were our tour guides and recommended the local train come gondola pass which is a must asmuch cheaper. Reception could not do enough for you! Free safe in your room! Which is unusual now a days. Board games to play in room. Book library in TV room. An excellent base and could not recommend more. So much to do in the area.

The best starting point to discover all Grindelwald has to offer in Winter and Summer. Friendly staff and renovated rooms and you have the chance to meet some locals at the 'Stammtisch' in the Gaststube. Restaurants are always open and the food was good.

Great hotel! Marion is the best! We had to delay our trip for 2 years because of Covid and they went out of their way to welcome us, upgraded us for our 30th anniversary and gave us lots of local travel perks, tips and insight. Marion is such a friendly and welcoming person! Our room had an awesome view of Eiger and the other peaks. You can't, literally can't get any closer to the train station. Food is excellent, room was comfortable and well appointed. I can't see us staying anywhere else in Grindelwald. Thank you Marion!

We had a fantastic 3 night visit starting on Easter. We had booked a room package back in September. Shortly after booking, the hotel told us some mistake had occurred that had allowed us to book the package and that the rail pass that was supposed to come with it could not be guaranteed because it would not be available during the time of our stay but that they would figure it out. True to the their word the hotel management did just that and provided us with a comparable, if not better, rail pass along with a beautiful room that fit a family of 4 perfectly with an amazing view of the Eiger. The service was second to none and I cannot recommend this hotel more highly. For rail travelers there could not be a more convenient location. If you are considering Grindelwald, which you should, consider this hotel. Or even better, just book it. You will thank me and you will thank them as they do such a great job!

Welcoming, down to earth hotel; friendly, helpful staff and comfortable rooms – what more could you want. Great location next to the train station to get to Kleine Scheidegg and Grindelwald Terminal for access to the Eiger and Mannlichen ski areas (outside daytime busy periods the station is quiet with few trains running) and 100m from the main bus stop to get to Grindelwald First (if you don’t fancy walking). When we return to Grindelwald we’ll be staying here again. If you are in a north facing room and fancy sitting in the afternoon sun, go up to the lounge/balcony area on the 4th floor – great views of the Eiger and valley. To be aware of, we stayed on half board with the half board evening menu offering very few vegetarian options (non on several nights) so if you are a non-meat eater check with the hotel that they can accommodate you.

Firstly, thank you Oana and Dominic for making us feel like royalty during our stay at The Derby Hotel in Grindelwald! You are both lovely people who are extremely professional, caring and always showed us how much you love your work by being yourselves! Oana, you always smiled and helped us with any queries that we had during our stay; you are a true credit to The Derby Hotels owners and they should be proud that they have such an outstanding member of their team! I'd highly recommend stating here at The Derby Hotel just because of how your staff cared for us! The entrance to The Derby Hotel is literally 30 feet from the train/trams final destination, you really can't get any closer to their reception desk, unless the train drove inside The Derby Hotel! It's a perfect location to start and end your stay here in Grindelwald! We had the half board menu during our 7 night stay. The food really was superb and I genuinely can't find any faults with the quality, ingredients and the service of said food! I've got to say that their cooked and continental breakfast combination is very, very good! I've never seen such a superb choice of locally sourced hams, breads and cheeses! The selection of vegetables was very good and was varied and their 'help yourself' salad bar was a breath of fresh air and always well stocked. There was a vegetarian option which my son utilised and complemented on frequently! The team members who changed our bed sheets, towels and toiletries each day did such a good job and they were silent and almost invisible to us! I had the opportunity to speak to a lovely Polish member of their team and she was lovely and genuinely enjoyed her work! The hotel lobby, stair ways and restaurant area was clean and welcoming! You book your free sauna/wellness session at reception! Just speak to the reception team and they'll accommodate you with their friendly and cheerful mannerisms! Their English is brilliant and they really made me and my guests feel welcome! There are two viewing balconies located on the fourth floor and at either side of this brilliant hotel, so that you can enjoy the sun in the morning, and then relocate to the other side of the hotel to enjoy the sun in the afternoon! There's a 40 inch TV, well stocked book shelf, board games for you to use and a cosy seating area located in between said viewing balconies! There are two lifts that leave reception and take you to all floors. The hotel is disabled friendly and offers free parking directly outside the main reception! The 'boot room' is well maintained and has a very efficient set of 'sliding' ski rack storage units and heated boot dryers! I shared a room with my son and the beds (Swiss style) separated to form two single beds next to each other, unlike Austrian double beds that remain as one. They're also rather comfy which allowed me to have a decent night's sleep every night during my visit. I highly recommend The Derby Hotel! It is the 'full package'! I've got to say that Oana, you have such a beautiful soul and really made our stay special! Thank you!

Lovely homely hotel with friendly helpful staff. In general a 4 out of 5, but after my wife suffered an accident on the slopes, they rolled out the red carpet and assisted in any way they could - including hour long trips to the hospital at no cost. When I return to Switzerland, I will return to this hotel. Also really convenient for the arrival and departure train transfers. Snow train right outside, but the rooms are really quiet. Good facilities and plenty of food etc.. And a Nespresso machine in the room.
