Our room was gorgeous. View of the mountain. Breakfast was great. Peaceful and quiet. Bedroom door opened to a small terrace/garden. Tip: For people with luggage, I recommend using the hotel shuttle as the hotel is on a steep uphill street. Even us carrying groceries.. we had to stop and we’re fit. Secondly … for lunch/dinner go to Bebbis. Hearty portions, views all around.
We were travelling with friends and both our families were upgraded to a suite on the top floor. Nice touch from the very nice owner of the hotel. She and her staff were extremely friendly, going the extra mile to make sure that we had a nice stay. This property is your typical solid Swiss mountain hotel. The views on the Eiger from the rooms are wonderful. The restaurant was closed because we were off peak season. Yet a very good breakfast buffet was still offered.
Hotel Alpenhof attracts with it's traditional swiss flair, and is for sure one of the best ones in Grindelwald. Unfortunately, during my stay the sauna was not working, and also otherwise the hotel seemed to be running only partially. There were only a few other guests in addition to me, and it was easily noticed that for example the cleanliness of the hotel was not on the level that so many other guests are referring to in their reviews. A loose thread on the room floor, dusty backside of the bathroom door, empty soap dispenser in the shower.... Almost too small things to even be mentioned, but I have a feeling that normally these things are taken care of. Like the headline says, "under current circumstances", Mr Payne is wishing Hotel Alpenhof a speedy recovery and better times ahead…
The hotel offer pick up from Grindelwald station helped as there is a slope where you have to walk from station and definitely won't want to carry you suitecase to climb the slope. Nice view of Mount Eiger and hotel deco is very traditional and cozy. Good breakfast and they even serve Asian Instant Noodle!
The rooms were good, well appointed and clean. The hotel location is convenient for walking into town. My only observation is that I would have expected the road outside to be relatively quiet, being a dead-end with very few houses beyond. But traffic continued regularly all through the night, and I had a road-facing room. But the hotel and restaurant were good.
I stayed here with my partner and this place was amazing. Beautiful views, incredible breakfast and the hotel staff are super friendly and helpful. I proposed to my girlfriend while in Grindelwald and the staff made us feel very special
Nice hotel and staff. Nice large room but the bathroom was very small. The width of the bathroom was roughly equal to the width of the door and at it’s narrowest you could touch both walls with your elbows slightly raised. I enquired at reception and they told me that all their bathrooms are small. Pretty poor value when a double room costs 250 chf per night. Also having wooden floors it felt like there was a herd of elephants above us.
I struggled with this a lot. I didn't know whether to give 2 stars or 1 star. Although the location is nice, the staff was nice (at first), but my overall experience was extremely unpleasant. We were there 2 nights and we didn't get even 1 hour of sleep because it was too hot and we were sweating a lot. They have no ceiling fans or air conditioning. We opened the windows but many insects entered our room. With the windows closed it was way too hot. The next day we asked them for a table fan and they said they didn't have any. To top that they said, paraphrasing, "this is Grindelwald and we don't use fans here". It was pretty clear that they didn't even have any table fans that we could borrow, but they couldn't even acknowledge our problem. Instead they kept saying things like "fans are not needed at this altitude". The reason I chose to give 1 star is because the whole point of a lodge is to stay there and get some rest. Well, we simply couldn't do that, the staff wasn't able to help us and they didn't even acknowledge our problem let alone even try to help us. When we were checking out, we suggested them to get a few table fans just in case some customers want it. Instead of acknowledging even this suggestion, their response was, paraphrasing, "We have been in this business for over 25 years and we have never received such request." That's it. That is all they said. We then just left. Unless you can sleep in somewhat warm weather without any air circulation, I would NOT recommend staying at this place at all.…
This is a perfect little hotel a short walk uphill from Grindelwald. You can walk up the road from the train station, a few blocks up the hill or via a footpath above the Coop Grocery store. The walk is short maybe 5-10 minutes, depending on how fast you can walk uphill. You can keep walking in the neighborhood up behind the Alpenhof for amazing views of the mountains across the valley. We shared one large double room with two adults and two kids (8 and 11). There were two beds, one being a fold out couch, that worked great. The best part was the porch which had unobstructed views of the Eiger. The on-suite bathroom was small but very nice and everything was super clean. The staff are very friendly at the front desk and can arrange train tickets and other tickets for the sights around town. The room came with a free pass to the sports center which was great for the kids for a swim after a long day hiking. And to top it all off, the free breakfast was delicious and all the variety anyone could want before a big day of hiking or just touring around town! …
A group of 8 friends stayed here. The rooms were clean and comfortable with beautiful views. Convenient location with short but uphill walk from train station. Restaurant was just OK but we were too tired to walk elsewhere after hiking all day! Staff was very helpful. We did not love Grindelwald as it was so much more busy than other quaint towns we visited.
