The agriturismo La Porta di Mignana is a hidden paradise set in the Tuscan landscape. If you're looking for quiteness, a bit of luxury, privacy and want to experience true Tuscany: you found your spot. It's set on it's own hill covered with olive trees to produce home-made olive oil. We were welcomed by Filomena, the very friendly owner. She greated us with a fine cup of Italian coffee and offered us a nice bottle of wine to enjoy during our stay. What a warm welcome! True Tuscan hospitality. Although she only speaks Italian (and we don't) she managed to inform us really well with all the activities and possibilities of the region. Enough to see and do! After a long drive, we felt very much at home in our own little house on our own hill. Okay, maybe you share the hill, the view and the magnificent pool with the 4 other guest parties. But still, it feels like your own paradise. We rented the Casotto dei Birri for a week in July. I'm in love with this little house. It's newly built with old building materials and much respect for tradition and atmosphere. It was very nicely done! The house has a private terrace, covered to protect from the burning Tuscan sun. The terrace had a table with chairs and two comfortable lounge chairs. It offered both sun and shade and is protected from the wind, which often blows on this hill. That makes it very comfortable and relaxing, even when it's said to be 37 degrees in mid summer. The terrace offers a magnificent full and open view on the valley. You can see as far as the hills of Pisa and Lucca! The house itself is very comfortable and is as complete with all its facilities like it's your own home. A large kitchen, large fridge, dish washer and even your own washing machine! We opted for the additional airconditioning, since it was such a hot week when we were there. We were glad we did! The house might be cool enough in normal weather conditions. It had a comfortable couch, dining table for 4 and a mezzanine with a very comfortable bed. Ofcourse, Filomena put a bottle of home made olive oil in the kitchen for our use and even put a bowl with delicious cantuccini for our taste. Just to remind us of all the delicious tastes Tuscany has to offer! The house was very spacious, luxurious and very nicely decorated in a rural style. When writing this review, I wish I could go back immediately... There's so many good things to tell, that it's impossible to summarize. The pool is very nice. Large enough for all the guests and with enough lounge chairs as well. The location is excellent, but not only for it's priceless view. The town of Vinci is really close and offers nice restaurants. I would also recommend the Leonardo da Vinci museum. It has scale models of his inventions. Very nice to enjoy. The larger city of Empoli is a 10-15 minutes drive. It has both a very large modern commercial centre with al large supermarket (coop) and a nice historic centre with picturesque streets, shops and cafes. Empoli is especially convenient because of it's train station. It offers direct trains to Florence, Pisa and Siena. You can park your car on the adjacent car park for a couple of euros a day. A nice way to visit these cities! There's so many nice places to visit that you could hardly be bored. If there is a downside to this accommodation there's only two things I could think off: you need a car to get anywhere and the road leading to La Porta is a 'small and winding road'. There's hardly any traffic though, so don't fear. And ofcourse there's another disadvantage: once you've stayed here, it's hard to find something that matches it's quality!
