This hotel is a hidden gem! Such an authentic feel when you walk through the door. The room we had was beautiful with a terrace that was attached. It was so nice to be able to sit and relax and enjoy looking at all of their lovely lemon trees while sipping my espresso or a glass of wine! Carmel and Pino are warm and welcoming. It was wonderful just chatting with them throughout our stay. The hotel is charming, small and extremely clean. The location is wonderful - the train station is a short walk and all the attractions are easily accessible from their location. There are excellent restaurants in the area. Carmel recommended one to us which ended up being our favorite place to eat. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and look forward to staying there again some day!

This hotel is AWESOME! We stayed 3 nights and can't wait to go back! The room was spacious, comfortable and charming. There's also a big roof top patio that all guests can use, big enough if you want privacy, but also an easy way to connect with other guests if you want to socialize. The hosts are FANTASTIC! Carmel was particularly warm and welcoming. She invited us for cake and champagne to celebrate her birthday. When I got a stomach bug, she even made me home-made chicken soup! The location is great, too, on a quiet street yet just 10 minutes to the train station and a short walk to all the sights like the Academia (statue of David) and the Duomo. It's worth going to Florence to stay at this hotel!! When you go, please tell Carmel that Eleanor says Hello and I hope to return soon :)

This is the second time I've stayed here. Carmel and Pino really go the extra mile to make your stay special. The hotel is charming and small. The terrace is beautiful! Espresso on the terrace is a great way to start the day. There's a fancy coffee maker in the room that makes outstanding espresso. They also leave a little donut or danish which is a really nice touch. The location couldn't be better. It's an easy walk to everything. The train station is a short five minute walk. There's too many excellent restaurants within a five minute walk to list. I would never consider staying anywhere else in Florence. I can't wait to return!

HOTEL IL BARGELLINO is in a good central location and has the nicest, sweetest hosts! The rooms are big and the bathroom was huge. It was an easy walk to see DAVID and there were a lot of nice restaurants in the area. Highly recommended.

Great location, a short walk to the Mercato Centrale, the Duomo, Uffizi, and Arno, yet quiet at night. Great Osteria just across the street (but make a reservation!). Wonderful hosts, and the terrace is just beautiful for waking up in the morning and winding down in the evening. I would not hesitate to book another stay.

I booked this 'hotel' due to the rave reviews posted here, and have to say I am bewildered by the positive impressions. I traveled in Rome, Venice, and Le Marche, in addition to my stay at Il Bargellino in Florence, and paid the same (85 euros) , but with positive results. My positive review of Villa Delle Palme (Venice) suggests that I am reasonable in my impressions. The review I will write for the Beehive will convey the same. That said, I'd have to say that Il Bargellino rates as a hostel, not a hotel....and a deficient one at that.

From the start the directions to the hotel did not clarify that the 'first' 87 Guelfa is a porno shop. You must continue on down the street till you find the 2nd #87 which is the hotel. Upon entering there was a prominent smell of mildew permeating the hallways. We met Pino, who was friendly. He consistently said hello and shared pleasant conversation. Carmello was absent throughout our stay as I believe she was overseas. Unfortunately pleasant rapport doesn't make for service, which is what a 'hotel' is about. There was no common area for guests to gather, no useage of phone, no place to prepare a cup of tea or cofffee. The same towels were to be used throughout the duration of the stay. No toiletries were provided other than a travel size bar of industrial soap, and toilet paper. The bed was hard as a rock.
On the plus side, the decor was lovely and the room spacious. The terrace is large and beautiful, albeit other than our first day it was too chilly and rainy to use during out stay. The fridge in the room was very useful. The location is good. In fact it is very near the Accadamia. Lastly, we did adore the resident cat Silvestre who spent time with us in our room. We allowed him to stay in our room, since his howling outside our terrace door at 3 am disturbed our sleep. We also loved his company.
Our last night at Il Bargellino was the 'clincher' in terms of our negative impression. In the evening we could hear Pino engaged in a rather loud disagreement with a woman downstairs. Thankfully the yelling stopped by the time we went to sleep. Upon leaving, Pino sat in place exchanging niceties with my friend in the reception area, while I dragged my heavy luggage downstairs. She and I both acknowledged once outside and enroute to the airport that he didn't even offer to help me with my bags.
Given all I experienced at Il Bargellino, I would strongly advise anyone visiting the beautiful city of Florence to spend their time and money wisely by staying elsewhere.

After having read the reviews about this hotel, I had higher expectations and I must say after my stay at this hotel this weekend I was disappointed. I am VERY unclear about where the good reviews are coming from! I would say that I am a very reasonable person, widely travelled, having stayed at a range of accomodations from hostels to 5* hotels. Sure, the hotel was centrally located, and directions to the hotel clear, but I agree with another reviewer that this hotel was more of a hostel than a hotel. The bathroom had a pungent, old, dank smell to it and it was a wet bathroom - ie - you had to shower right over the toilet without a tub. The bed was quite hard as well. As for decor, because it was raining outside, they had spread out a white bath sized towels on the floor which was damp and walked on and which we had to walk on to get to the stairs...not exactly inspiring. I walked by hotels closer to the center with much nicer lobbies that looked warm, newer and more comfortable for comparable prices (I asked). Because the doors to the rooms were so flimsy, in the morning we could hear their bird (they have pet parrot) shreaking and squacking and we could also clearly hear the lobby telephone ringing throughout the hotel at 2am in the morning. Although the man who owned the hotel in the end allowed me to pay for our two nights with a credit card, he grumbled about it, when I asked, he punched numbers into his calculator to say that because it was low season (€95 per night for 3 people), I should be paying cash. I won't be staying here again.

After reading reviews decided to stay here on my birthday to have a relaxing fun time. Bad choice. I think the room we stayed in was #6. Sewer gas in bathroom was so bad that it also entered the bedroom area. We complained to both owners and they blamed the smell on the family who had stayed there the previous night with a small child. I know the smell of sewer gas and its caused by bad plumbing not from previous night guests. Owners didn't express any desire to help us other than opening a window which allowed a lot of street noise into the room. We were unable to sleep and felt very disappointed and cheated. Now we know why she wanted to be paid in advance and not accept a credit card to reserve the room. We would not recommend this place to anyone, as it was one of the worst experiences we have ever had in our traveling. We would have been better off if we had slept in the train station.

Fortunately we aren't often in the position of having to the defend Il Bargellino since most guests are quite pleased with our accommodations. Regarding this particular review; we were only made aware that these guests had a problem around 9:30 p.m. and both were already in pajamas ready for bed. It reminds me of the proverbial man who after finishing three quarters of his meal finds that he doesn't like it. Thanks to Trip Advisor for the opportunity to respond. M. Carmel Coppola

We just returned from four nights at Il Bargellino in Florence. We couldn't have been happier with our room, which opened onto the hotel's gorgeous rooftop terrace... a wonderful oasis from the craziness of Florence in the summer.

The room itself was huge, clean and very comfortable.

The hotel is well located, walking distance from the train and bus station. It is about a fifteen minute walk from the main downtown area.

We had great luck with two of the restaurants near the hotel, Gratella and Trattoria Guelfa... some of the best food of the trip.

Il Bargellino's staff was wonderful and Carmen, the owner, was so very helpful.

I highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again!

Seriously, I'm not sure who is writing the glorious reviews for this place, but staying here literally ruined our trip to Florenece. This is a ONE star hotel in a slightly seedy part of town. I ignored the bad review from naho82 and booked the place thinking it might be charming and that they were just being too picky. You've been warned, believe the bad reviews!
Our room was rather run down and sparse and the bathroom was disgusting. Very outdated with dirty cracked floor tiles, and the bathroom smelled so bad we had to hold our breath the whole time we were in it,
We had to ask for the remote for the air conditioner (they had just given us a fan) and when we would come back from outings we would find the air condiditoner off, I'm assuming someone sneaked in and turned it off, because other times when we were there the air conditioner stayed on fine.
One time when we returned from an outing we found our door wide open with our cameras. etc.. in fulI view. Not sure how long they had left it like this, or why the door was open. We made sure that we took all our valuables with us from that point on.
Our first night there, the proprietors with their family and freinds, partied very loudly in the common area, until about 12:30 at night, when finally a guest asked them to quiet down. I thought it very odd that they would do this with guests staying at the hotel . Between the partying and the street noise I got very little sleep. i had to go buy earplugs for the second night. We desperately tried to find another hotel, but everything in town was booked so we were stuck there for 2 miserable nights.
There was no fridge, no TV, no internet connection, no breakfast. For the price they charged I expected much, much nicer. We traveld to 4 other cities and this was the only dog we stayed in. The place we stayed in Rome was 100x nicer, had fridge, tv, internet, breakfast and was only $20/Euros more a night
If you stay here, you're getting ripped off. I don't think it is just that we had a bad room, I heard some kids who were staying there laughing about their rooms saying they were like their dorm rooms.

PROS: Close to train station, Terrace was nice, Beds were actually half way comfortable, they gave a good recommendation for dinner

CONS: Not the greatest part of town, atmosphere of a hostel, run down, dirty and smelly bathroom, noisy, owners who didn't really respect the guests, over priced, air condidtioner doesn't work that well, no TV, no internet, no breakfast, no fridge.

I've never written a review before, but felt I had to for this. I absolutely have no idea why this is in Rick Steve's book and i am truly stumped why people are writing glowing reviews of the place.

Responded 19 Jul 2011
My husband and I live here in the hotel and we do sometimes entertain. Most guests participate and enjoy the experience as an evening to remember! Unfortunately this was not the case with these guests and I can only say that if something had been said at the time they were feeling annoyed, much discontent could have been avoided. All rooms and bathrooms are thoroughly cleaned daily. Room doors are left open during daily cleaning. There is nothing sinister about this. The premises and front door are monitored 24/7 by both video camera and human presence. Free wi-fi internet access is available throughout the hotel and out on our terrace. Guests need only ask for the password. Refrigerator, fan, hairdryer, espresso maker, microwave, wine glasses, iron etc. are all amenities that are either in the room or available for guests to use. Our air conditioners are all new and work very well. A/C is available in only 5 of our double rooms. Therefore it is not included as a matter of course in our very reasonable rates. The remote is given to guests in rooms where A/C is available upon request. It may be left on at the discretion of guests any time they are in their room and is turned off when they’re out. This is for energy conservation and there is nothing sneaky about it. None of our rooms are similar in anyway to dorms. All beds and mattresses are new and quite comfortable so I’m not sure what was misunderstood in a casually overheard conversation. Thank you, Carmel Coppola
