Having extensively read all the reviews, we were adamant we had made the right decision in booking our stay at Cohen House Hostel. Upon arrival, our mind still hadn't changed. We were greeted by the lovely Joanna, who was more than accommodating and kindly showed us to our room. All seemed well until we opened the door and were greeted by the squalor that we had paid a hefty €50 a night for. Ever the optimists and still believing we would have access to the amenities listed on Hostel World, we decided to put on our best smiles and thank her kindly for her hospitality. As our evening progressed, things quickly began to deteriorate. This began with a faulty plug socket that spontaneously emerged from the wall next to my friend's bed - posing a serious risk of electrical fire. (See attached photo) This encouraged us to make a quick exit for the evening and locate the supermarket to purchase some basic food necessities and water, as there was no access to drinking water in the "hostel". One quick call to Joanna to question where we can find the fridge that is listed as included in the list of amenities (as you would expect from any standard of hostel) informed us that in fact we had no access to a fridge, nor a common area, or anything we had believed to be included. This was justified by Joanna to be a consequence of a large group booking who had claimed the common area where all these facilities apparently were. As such, we had no option to purchase any fresh food or any facility to keep our water cold. This was a big inconvenience to say the least, but we still thought we would try and make the best of things as Joanna promised us these would be accessible the following day. That night was undoubtedly the worst nights sleep either of us had ever experienced due as like every other promised facility, the air conditioning unit in our room also remained to be seen. Both of us seriously considered sleeping on the beach because of the suffocating lack of air circulation in the room. When we informed Joanna of this complaint, her tone turned sour and she tried to claim that we were only entitled to one night's stay instead of the two we had paid for. We requested a refund as we considered the room to be inhabitable but she informed us this wasn't going to happen - at which point we decided to accept the loss and go elsewhere. Let it be noted, as two frequent hostel users, we have slept in many an uncomfortable room, but this was the WORST.…
