a good friend and I and my dog stayed one night . We were so pleased, it was clean, confortable, in a great location and best of all, my doggy was so welcome. She actually had her own room! This is a nice B&B with a fabulous owner, Nicola. He greeted us from the ferry from the airport (make sure to take Blue Line 1 from airport to Arsenale). Our room was on the 3rd floor, so pack what you can carry up the stairs. Breakfast every morning was cheese, pastries, coffee, salami, and yogurt. It took us 10... More

This is a charming little b&b, away from the busy-ness of the city, but within minutes walk of the big tourist spots. Also just a few minutes from some very non-toursty spots, which is where we headed! The landlord / owner is great, the breakfast (which is really more like an all-day buffet!) plentiful and the room was clean, air-conditioned... More

As far as first trips go, this was one of the best. Venice, with it's old world charm, winding alleys and waterways, was pretty much what I always thought it to be. A huge part of this was down to the B&B my aunt and I stayed in. Tucked away in the Castello area, it was a respite from the... More

The owner, Nicola, was very helpful during our entire stay. He gave us simple directions for getting to Venice from the airport and then met us at the Alilguna stop and walked us the the bed and breakfast. He gave us some excellent restaurant suggestions, and general advice. Then when we were leaving he made sure that we knew what... More

First time in Venice and travelling solo! Having never been to Venice before, the vaporette from the airport seemed a daunting experience on its own - but with Nicola's advice it could not have been easier. Nicola is extremely helpful from my first email to my last few hours in Venice. I was extremley grateful for Nicola metting me at... More

It is just bed a breakfast. I was the guest of someone staying there and we stayed in the 2 room suite. I will say the suite is just 2 plain bedrooms. Nothing fancy when you hear the words suite. The breakfast is store bought pastries and Italian cold cuts, cheese and some white bread. Nicola is a lovely gentleman.... More

Nicola, the owner of the B&B, was extremely helpful with advice, suggestions and recommendations. Guests may use the coffee machine and help themselves to bread, cake, fruit, etc from the breakfast area at any time. We walked everywhere, finding that tho the Oceano Mare is well placed away from the 'tourist zone', it's just a short walk to both San... More

On my yearly visits to Venice Oceano Mare has become my place. A small residence with 4 rooms, one a two-bedroom suite, in a lovely little corner of the city. Far enough into non-tourist territory to avoid the inevitable sea of humanity; heading back in the evening after dinner or a concert is actually lonely; yet under 10 minutes walk... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
