This hotel is in an excellent location in the heart of Venice just a couple of minutes walk from the St Lucia train station and close to the cruise terminal. Hotel staff were friendly and very helpful. Our room with bathroom was charming and spotlessly clean. Nice breakfast in hotel next door. We thought this hotel was excellent value for...

We stayed in "Hotel Moderno" that was actually Hotel Zechinni when you arrived (I think Hotel Moderno had been closed down, as the address that we were given was a boarded up building!) The room was clean with good facilities, make sure you take mosquito repellant though, as i got bitten alive on the first night. It was extremely central,...

It did take a while to find the hotel moderno, as it went by a different name "Zecchini". The hotel is a short walk from the railway station and the water bus stop. The room was fairly basic, but clean. We stayed during the olympics and you could get Eurosport in the bedrooms. The breakfast was ok, but didn't offer...

This hotel is extremly small, but pleasently decorated and clean. The room was very small but clean and the bed confortable. several tv chanels available. In the small...

This was a last minute booking so had to take what was availble. That said Hotel Moderno was fine. Entrance up an alley which looked a bit off putting - but there are many many hotels similarly sited - up alleys. Have to register in the hotel next door - the Hotel Zecchini. We had a third floor room. Furniture...

This is the worst hotel that I have ever stayed in. It was nasty the bed was worn out. The towels looked like they had been used to clean the restaurant downstairs. The room smelled bad. The pillows were old, flat, smelly and gross. This was a cheap hotel, but my best advice is don't stay near the train station....

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
