Location cannot be faulted a short walk to the Bridge of Sighs and San Marco. Clean, well maintained, breakfast in hotel a few doors away good. However 47 steps up to your room not 37 as stated by a reviewer. This should be detailed not sure it is. Beware of the mozzies in March and it was only 16 degrees.

This hotel is in a fabulous location, minutes walk from both the famous square and the heart of Venice and also the water busses. The room was small but was clean tidy and well equipped as was the ensuite Breakfast in the morning is taken in the Castello next door and had a good selection of a continental breakfast and...

Just had an excellent stay here. It is as everyone has said down a quiet alley, but that's fine (Venice is all about narrow alleys and this is like so many a little dark and not so pretty). But it is very handy being only 2 mins from St Marks Square. The room is up two flights of stairs in...

I will admit it was a little disconcerting to be led down a less-than-lively alley to our room upon arrival however we were pleasantly surprised with our cosy little room. It was clean, light and included everything we needed. The location was perfect for first time solo travellers - two minutes away from San Marco Square and an easy walk...

Very well located hotel, close to San Marco Square and good eating places nearby. We were a party of 4 women in 2 rooms situated in the annexe, a few doors away from main hotel. Room and bathroom were spotless and bed very comfortable. Breakfast , served in main building, provided a good choice of cereals, some fruit, cold meats,...

This was a great little hotel just yards from St Mark's Square. It is a separate annex further down the alley from its parent hotel so you need to go there to check in and to have breakfast but it's only 15 yards or so. It is up old authentic Venetian stairs and there is no lift so if you...

I would like to reply to all the negative reviewers for this hotel, yes I agree there was stairs, but theses were fully carpeted and with handrails, and come on this is Venice and not many of the smaller hotels are blessed with lifts, you are also aware when you book the hotel does not have a lift. Yes it...

We were booked into Hotel Castello, but we were miserable due to allergies (musty and weird perfume sprayed everywhere) and noise, so the staff was very accommodating and moved us here. Though still a bit musty, the air quality was much better here. Nice sized room and bath and clean. Location is unbeatable by San Marco. Additionally, Venice is so...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
