On arrival, we were up-graded (for a small extra price) from 3rd floor to 1st floor, which was most welcome arriving after dark in 1 of Venice's splendid thunder-storms. In a quiet side-street, it has good access to vaporetti (water bus-substitutes), cafes & restaurants. 3 nights here gave us just enough time to visit the popular islands & principal places...

We ended up staying in a part of the hotel that didn't have hot water for half the price of the room, we took it but the room was very bare and was not decorated at all. Kind of reminded me of hostels. You had a shared bathroom but that wasn't bad, they were clean. The AC was nice and...

We stayed in Hotel Guerrini for an extra night in Venice after a cruise. We chose it as it was very reasonable compared to other hotels and was about a 10 minute walk from Piazza de Roma. Check in was from 1pm, but we arrived with our bags after leaving the ship at 9am, and asked if we could leave...

Guerrini is a really good base to discover Venice - it's in a quiet side street of Strada Nuova, close to the railway station and to the Guglie and San Marcuola vaporetto stops. It's close to the fruit and vegetable market and many "non-tourist" shops (supermarket, pharmacy ...). The staff - it's a family run business - is friendly and...

If you want a low hassle cheap accommodation solution in Venice here is the answer. Situated 5 minutes walking distance from santa lucia the hotel is traditional and dated but if you can get over that the rooms are basic and clean. Our bed was past its best and no doubt they could upgrade things slightly with some low scale...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
