My family spent four days at the Hotel Fontana in the middle of September. An incredibly convenient location - quick and scenic walk to St. Mark's Square or to the Rialto Bridge, as well as other sights. But the best feature is the easy access from the St Zaccariah vaporetta stop; very important for arrival and departure. Only about a...

Hotel Fontana is a five minute walk from Piazza San Marco. A map will definitely help locate it the first time round. The reception staff is courteous and accommodating. Our room was spacious, clean and well decorated. The continental breakfast provided consisted of coffee, juice, croissants, hard boiled eggs, cold cuts, pastries, cereals, etc. all fresh and inviting. It can...

We stayed here for 3 nights. We enjoyed our stay very much. The room and bathroom were very clean. The room was air conditioned which was a necessity as it was very hot in August. It is a family owned hotel and the reception staff (most were family members) were very helpful and welcoming. Hotel only is a few stories...

This little hotel was perfect for my first trip to Venice. Easy to find in a city of small alleys and tons of tourists. The staff were very helpful. The room was clean, beds comfortable and bathroom adequate. The breakfast was more than adequate to get through the morning - cold cereal, hard boiled eggs, cold cuts, fruit and bread/cheese....

We just spent two nights in this very clean and well located hotel. The owners - a warm family- made us feel so welcomed! It is a short walk from the vaporetto, St. Mark's square, and streets of shopping and dining. Bed was great - we felt well rested after long walks in the city of Love!

Stayed here in August for 4 nights, on arrival the guy at reception told us we had been upgraded to a room with a terrace, this was a welcome surprise and it turned out to be very nice. The hotel is family run, it is a fair size for a back street hotel with a nice bar and large breakfast...

5 minutes from the Water Taxi and Vaporetto drop off and 7 mins from St Marks Square. Very convenient location. Small, family run hotel. Pleasant, helpful Staff. Large clean room. Breakfast, in our opinion, was good. Help yourself Continental Buffet which meant we never went out feeling hungry. Plenty of restaurants on the doorstep. Plenty of shops on the way...

The hotel is ideally located and the street noise is bearable with ear plugs. Very old-fashioned rooms and WIFI is not usable in many rooms. Almost no foreign channels, although it says satellite TV. The staff is nice and rooms are very clean. Prices are good for this location and Venice. Breakfast is a big joke to be honest. Coffee...

The location is perfect. Away from the really busy areas but in an area close to all main attractions and with ample services n shops right next door. This is a family owned hotel and it shows. Got a nice personal touch to it all and older generations are always about greeting guests. The bedrooms and bathrooms are basic but...

Found the hotel via Trivago and was very pleased with the choice. Having established which boat-taxi stop to get off, I was amazed at just how easy it was to find the hotel. Literally about 100 yards from the Grand Canal and just a few minutes walk to St Marks Square. The hotel is family run and they are very...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
