My last trip to Venice lasted one week and I divided my accommodation into three different places in order to have a richer experience of the different areas -or sestieri- of the city. Foresteria Valdese is in the Palazzo Cavagnis. It is run by the Waldesian Church that took over the building around 1868 and since then it is being...

Many people opt to stay outside of central Venice because it is so expensive. This 16th century palace hostel run by the Waldensian church is a great find - 10 minutes from San Marco but in a non-touristy area. Some of the rooms are quite updated, some are older but have frescoes on the ceilings and walls (it is a...

We had a great experience with the Foresteria Valdese. I found it easy to make the reservation, initially by phoning from Canada then confirmations by email. Our check-in went well and we were able to leave our bags as we arrived early. Found staff very helpful. Breakfast basic but enough for two teenagers to get started - cereal, yogurts, coffee,...

We stayed here for a week and really enjoyed the accommodation except for the very rude woman who was boarding there who continuously critised us for sitting in the wrong area, for opening a window and the for eating food at the wrong table. I previously stayed here on two other occassions but after the harrassment I will not be...

I stayed at the Foresteria Valdese in late July 2009 and found it to be a great price performer for a family of three. I simply don’t know how else we could have afforded to stay in Venice otherwise. We had a family-size room on the second floor that held a bunk bed and a single. Plenty of space to...

Hotter than Hades itself. Mold, mold, MOLD. Showers were shocking. I really expected more from a church run establishment.

Venice is a notoriously expensive city. So, if you are looking for affordable accommodations, check this place out. We got a triple room with private bath, and a canal view for 100 Euros. It was a lovely room, with 2 levels, but there is no air con and it was STIFLING -- esp. on the upper level. Also, the people...

We were 4 couples in our 60s, spending 3 nights. We had 3 doubles with private bath and 1 kitchenette unit w/bath; all were spotlessly clean with TVs. One dble was in the old section of the building; it looked out only onto another building less than a foot away, but was large and comfortable and very quiet. Other 2...

This is a wonderful and efficiently run place. It is basic but has its own beauty. The location is a knockout.

This hostel was run by the Methodists in Venice and is so classy and charming you can hardly believe it is so cheap. Positives: We first had a double because the dorms were full of school groups. We were in a double with shared bathrooms. The room had loads of charm with cracking frescoes and a window that opened up...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Foresteria Valdese is one of the guest houses of the Waldensian and Methodist Church in Italy. We are a non-profit making guest house: our mission is to create value to our customers and the income is used to fund and sustain social projects in Italy and in the world for youth and elderly people. The house is just few minutes away from St. Mark's Square and Rialto Bridge. It offers to its guests a warm and welcoming environment in a typical eighteenth century palace and it is a perfect starting point to visit such a magic city as Venice is. The Foresteria offers bed and breakfast accommodation for singles, couples, families and groups. No AC, we have fans in the rooms. Some rooms are with canal view and some are decorated with frescoes. We have bedrooms for 2/3/4 people and family rooms for 6/8/9 people. They all have either ensuite or private bathrooms. Breakfast hall is also available for your own picnic, you can use 2 fridges and 1 microwave. Concert hall is also available for conferences. Every 5 days we change the linen. Some rooms have TV, and there is a TV in 2nd floor near the children corner. Hairdryer and other accessories are available in reception. ... more   less
