We spent 3 nights at Hotel Messner 29th December - 1st January, 2015. To start with the positive experiences the location is really convenient, by foot just as well as by vaporetto or airport shuttle boat (Alilaguna) easy to reach. The breakfast was OK, their sweet breads are really nice, but the rest is average or bit below. Our room...

Lovely location for a hotel in Venice - far enough away from the hustle and bustle of San Marco, but easy enough to get to anywhere. (Especially if you use the vaporetti - water buses. I recommend a multi-day vaporetto pass from Venezia Unica). The hotel is clean and tidy. The staff are welcoming and very helpful. The breakfast was...

Loved this little hotel, great location - and very friendly staff. Bedroom was good size, powerful shower and the beds were v comfy : ) Brekky was good, we wouldn't have minded something hot, as was all cereals & croissants. But this was all made up in there dinner. Slightly over priced for what they offer, but all in all...

Wow, where can I start! Location is ok, Venice is small so any where your hotel is located should be okay. Bathrooms have no toilet roll holders, no towel racks or holders and limited space. Shower door broke while in use, and shower flooded bathroom floors during use too. We called reception and asked if we could get this fixed,...

Don't eat here! Service NONE, food horrible, house wine horrible! They don't even slice your pizza! It was an awful experience! When we asked why they didn't slice our pizza they picked up my fork and knife they sliced other pizzas just not ours. The waiter was sullen and we had to finally get up and get our own salt...

If you are used to a hostel, then this is the next step up. If you are on a tight budget and do not mind a spot with no amenities, tiny rooms/bathrooms, then this is adequate. Beware, some of the rooms share a bathroom. We had our own but, again, barely adequate. In theory this has breakfast but it was...

The location of the hotel is great but overall I was far from impressed. That was the worst bed I ever slept in (a couch bed that caved in in the middle, superb) and breakfast was very poor. If anyone is staying there, though, make sure you visit Ai Gondolieri for lunch or dinner. They serve really delicious typical Venetian...

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
