My wife and I stayed at Pensione La Calcina for 3 nights in early October. It had been recommended by friends who had stayed twice before so we were confident of good accommodations. It didn't disappoint. The room was not large but was very clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were excellent - much beyond what we expected and the front...

La Calcina is obviously very popular with TripAdvisor members. It gets consistently good reviews and it clearly has a loyal following. Having just returned from a three night stay there, I have mostly very positive things to report, but a few lingering concerns. Back in March 08 my wife and I were planning a trip to Venice to celebrate our...

Dear Madam/ Sir, good and not perfect is actually what we want to be. In order not to bore Tripadvisor's readers we can just say that for the negatives we shall try our best to improve and your review is sufficient to help us doing this. On the other hand It would have been a much greater help for us...

I booked at the hotel based on the glowing reviews here. I have to say that while I agree it has many fine qualities, it is not all that. The rooms are very small, one was only 11 metres! The lack of elevator is a nuisance for luggage. The staff at the restaurant (La Piscina) at breakfast are quite wonderful...

Dear Guest, thank you for giving us a 4 star review in spite of all this negatives. Just a few notes of explanation. 1) We write in our correspondence the surface of the rooms, you were informed about it. 2) We do not have an elevator but we have a 24 hours porter service; as far as we know there...

Saw this hotel reviewed in a magazine and contacted the Hotel immediately. We were offered an apartment close to the hotel , which was quiet , clean and spacious, with its own balcony. The hotel is situated in a quiet yet beautiful spot away from the crowds but within easy walking distance of the main attractions. Additionally , and most importantly...

I agree with the comments already posted, this was our 5th year staying at this Hotel. The food on the restaurant on the decking has without a doubt improved over the last years, I believe that the Hotel has concentrated on this aspect. It must have one of the best outlooks for eating in Venice

We ( couple ) had a lovely stay at this delightful pensione in quite a different part of venice away from so many tourists our room faced the guidecca canal and was all that we had hoped for : fresh, clean, comfortable (the beds are firm). The canal is very busy from about 7am so there was much to watch...

My spouse and I stayed in a canal view room in early July prior to leaving on a hiking trip to the Dolomites. (Cost was about 225 Euro but well worth it - nothing is inexpensive in Venice). The hotel is within a few metres walk from the Zatere waterbus stop/Alilaguna stop. Do not underestimate how convenient this is when...

What can I say? We loved our canal-view room at La Calcina. It was one of our favorite hotels during our entire Italian vacation. Our room was comfortable, and beaufiful, furnished with antiques. We had a gorgeous view of the Giudecca canal outside our windows; we never got tired of throwing the windows open, and soaking up that beautiful sight!...

Great view of the large canal. Far superior to being on the grand canal unless you just like to flout your money and lack of taste. Eat for certain in their restaurant. So quiet here...great a/c and a fabulous rooftop area which you can book for an hour of sun or wine or whatever. Helpful staff,,,,,lovely breakfasts....spacious rooms with character.

Our family of five (Mom, Dad and three teenage daughters) enjoyed our stay at the La Calcina apartments. In addition to the hotel proper, La Calcina (pronounced Calcheena) has four apartments that are a block away. We stayed in two of them, the Iris and the Viola. Check out www.warmhospitality.com for pictures and details. The apartments aren't on the canal...

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
